@munich_irish, hadn't realised anything was going on. Looks like they're racing along the Inntal today?
It's certainly not a day to be out on the bike, my phone is telling me it's about 6 degrees out there and it's currently raining.
Loads of snow forecast up the glacier this week! I have Friday off work, so i'll go and sample the powder. View it as my service to you all.

Had a visit to Hintertux yesterday, more people skiing and boarding off piste than on. There were so few people that even at the end of the day a lot of the off piste was far from tracked out.
On piste the snow was soft (as in semi packed powder soft not wet and hot soft) nearly everywhere apart from where they were still making snow! Just about wall to wall sunshine apart from a small snow flurry round about lunchtime.

|
|
@Chris_n, there's a BASI mountain safety course on the go up there this week, and mate of mine is on it. So that'll explain some of the off pisters.
We're hoping there'll still be enough snow at car park level in Hochfuegen on Sunday, and plan to tour up the pistes with the dog, assuming our travel home goes fine tonight/tomorrow from the UK.

@swskier, lots of locals up there too, loads of KU, KB and SZ plates in the car park. There was also a bus load of Dutch snowboarders. Saw a few BASI groups mainly alternating between short and long turns on the Olperer T Bar.

Ok we did see Fran at about 10 but didn't explain who we were as we weren't sure. Also felt a bit daft saying are you married to swskier. if it wasn't the right person.
Just after then, things took a turn for the worse. Kim was coming down the steep slope just above the Schneekar Hut and caught at edge as she was slowly making her way down. As she went down, her left arm was caught in the snow, and fractured at the shoulder, the left leg then extended and she did some ligament damage to he left knee. Evacuated off the hill to a clinic in Ramsau, £800 later she was discharged and told to get another scan when she gets home.
We are now booked on the Tuesday flight from Munich to Edinburgh, £500 and another £400 for the taxi.
Bummer! |
Good result from Admiral travel insurance, they paid out in full today, medical costs, repatriation costs, and 5/7th of the total Holliday costs, plus 5.5/6th for my lift ticket.
We did get a late bill from the ambulance company (who were useless) for the trip from the Horberg Bahn to the clinic in Ramsau, 380 Euro but the NHS have said that they will take care of that.
As for Kim, it's slow progress, just started physio last week and back for more x-rays this week.

Wow at the cost of the ambulance. I drove there most days in our van during the winter, if i'd known that's what they were charging, i'd have parked in the ambulance spot and offered journeys to Ramsau (or Mayrhofen, buyers choice!) for €200 a go

Over 50km open in Hintertux (and Stubai for that matter) on the 1st May. Bodes pretty well for late Spring / early Summer skiing?

@8611, I nipped up there briefly yesterday morning as we had the day off work in Austria and the snow was decent. I actually didn't ski long at all as we had plans with friends, but i'll be up there again on Sunday for my final ski of the season

@8611, i'll be at 72 outings come Sunday, I guess that'll do
In terms of actual skiing time (hours), I probably skied more last season, despite living in the UK, but i've had more skiing outings this season.

Four bank holidays in one month??
|
|
|
|
|
|
@8611, yes. The bank holidays here are done by the date though. So you have:
1st May Labour day
9th May Ascension
20th May Whit Monday
30th May Corpus Christi
If those days happen to fall on a weekend, then it doesn't get moved, you just don't get the day off work.
In total we get 13 days across the year, however 3 of those are on a weekend this year.

@swskier, Only 01.05 can fall on a weekend. Pfingsten / Whitsun is always a Monday and the other two are always on a Thursday (most folk take Friday off too!), some Catholic thing. The dates are a fixed number of days after Easter. With the early Easter this year they have all fallen in May, next year with a late Easter at least two of them will be in June. Not sure about the Tirol but in Bavaria, Ascension Thursday is Father's day which means Fathers & sons go to the beer garden so most have to take the following day off as not much use for anything

Maybe the Zillertal has been lucky but we are in the middle of a monsoon, continuous heavy rain for the past 24 hours and no sign of a let up, cold (for time of year) too. No sign of it clearing anytime soon. Seen various pictures of heavy snow in the mountains. Does Hintertux stay open in the spring?

It started raining not too long after the walk in those pictures, and has been on and off now ever since.
Hintertux were showing roughly 20cm of fresh snow and Tuxer Fernerhaus yesterday. You can see the snow at the top of Zell am Ziller as well now
This was taken on our dog walk this morning right by our house.

Skiing might be over (for me) but the mountain huts are starting to open up, so we'll hopefully be exploring the valley some more.
Today we did a walk that i'd planned for last year but forestry work stopped it, from Brandberg up to the Alpenrose Hütte which sits at 1398m.
Beautiful day and a lovely hut, with a great schnitzel!
After the walk we stopped off in Hollenzen on our way home where the Flying High testival was taking place, a paragliding festival.

Some impressive flying and stunts going on, including this duo
Fairly busy in the valley as it's a bank holiday weekend again! Austrians love a bank holiday in May, this is the 3rd and we have another one on the 30th as well!
Summer lifts also opened this weekend with Spieljoch in Fügen and Penken in Mayrhofen opening yesterday, a few more opening on the 30th, and the remaining lifts on 15th June. |
Hi SW, where did you park when you walked up to the Alpenrose, last time we went there it was on ebikes from the Hof,, but plan to walk tomorrow after driving up a bit.
PS we will be in Mikes Sports bar for the England game if you fancy joining us.

@JimboS, if you drive through the Brandberg tunnel, as you come out the other side there's a car park right there.

Thanks for the offer re the England game, we're actually in Innsbruck for a brass band rehearsal that finishes at 9, so won't be back until the 2nd half so will head straight home to catch that! Funnily enough no band rehearsals arranged during the Austrian matches!
PS, you've timed your trip well, as Summer is very much forecast to turn up this week! Get the sun cream ready!

@swskier, thanks, after a review of the climb and Kim's knee, we decided to head up to the Stilluptal valley and do a flat walk instead, turned out to be a great day. Heading up to Hintertux for a morning ski tomorrow but don't expect very good snow, probably won't freeze overnight.

Last minute question, I need to rent up at Hintertux tomorrow, any suggestions on the best shop to go to? I've rented a couple of times before at the shop right at the base station but remember they had rip off prices.

@JimboS, I don't know about rip off prices at the shop by the lift - Sport Nenner. I've only ever rented from there when I've wanted to try something specific. They have a good range in good condition. If you think they are expensive then you're paying for the convenience of not having to carry your skis far, of being able to return them at the shops on the mountain and of being able swap them during the day if you don't like them or want to try something different.
I don't suppose there are many rental shops at the moment who still have their ski rental available and have not switched to bike rental for the summer... Apart from Sport Nenner and the Intersport shop opposite the side entrance to the Tenne bar.
Have fun in Hintertux... The snow should be pretty good after the top up we had last week.

@JimboS, we were in the Grüne Wand Hütte back on the 7th for Mrs Swskier's birthday. One of her colleagues Steffi that she worked with at the Unterbergalm works in there during the summer. If you were in there, she's the blonde lady with the tattooed arms.
We were actually up at Hintertux on Saturday visiting the Nature Eis Palast.
https://www.natureispalast.info/
A really interesting tour. A fairly pricey day out on itself, just because of having to buy the pass in addition to the entrance fee, but if you tied it in with a day of skiing, it would make for an interesting hour during the middle of your day. Or after the lifts shut at 1.30.
We then went to Visorium in Mayrhofen and did an escape room, which was good fun. The place is very nice, it only opened in December and offers escape rooms, mini golf and laser tag as well as a bar and restaurant.
