Doesn't seem all that long ago that a trio of young Scandis (IIRC) were taken into the lake there. They were less lucky.

@chocksaway, hope you well ! Sounds like a great day.
Curious. Did they report any new snow today? As base stayed exactly the same according to Val and Tignes websites at 110 / 185cm ... appreciate wind, but surely the base increased after 24 hours more now !?

There has been a lot of fresh snow, but off piste, the base seems to be consolidating whi is probably why no increase in depth

@chocksaway, looking at webcam archive the slide by tov gondola happened between 13.40pm and 13.50pm |
Rescuers appear to be there at 14:20 and helicopter at 14:40. Best case is that he was buried/in the water for 20 minutes assuming the slide happened just before 13:50 and the rescuers arrived just after 14:10. If he survived that then he should get himself to the states and buy a ticket for the Powerball $1.5 billion lottery.

@Alex A, Tickety-boo thanks. The ski lift site reported 25/40cm but various sites get updated at various times. But I can unequivocally report that I cleared a load off my balcony this morning (which was cleared yesterday) and there is a bit more to do in the morning!
@Gaza, Yip!
@GeorgeVII, Likewise.
Just odd tonight on the bus to VC - it is the first really cold night this season (bizarre I know) but as it was chalet night out - there was a lot of 'pre-loaded' seasonnaires off on the pop in t shirts and jumpers - here's hoping they look after each other.

Moderate snow started falling just after 7 this morning, looks like its going to continue all day, winds still due to pick up in the afternoon - may be worth being back in the right valley after lunch just in case they are stronger than forecast, time to start putting lots of layers on

What a difference 12 hours makes. The snow was in great condition on piste, but it was very difficult to see most of the day, there was the odd slightly less dark patch and we had a mixture of snow grains (the type that rattle off your helmet) and big fluffy flocons. However, it was quite a bit warmer than yesterday. The pistes were very quiet but I can't comment on the off piste as there was never enough light to venture even off the edge for me. However, all of yesterdays tracks will have been filled in. The wind picked up post lunch and seemed to be blowing in all directions no doubt undoing all the good work the pisteurs have done - may be a progressive start in the morning.
The wind will pick up during the night and it will continue snowing until the morning. It will remain windy through tomorrow and the wind will become persistently northerly and the temperatures will also drop through the day. By late afternoon the freezing level will be down on the plains and with the wind it will be 'a top coat colder' to use an old Yorkshire phrase. However there will be sunny periods from mid morning onwards. It should cloud over tomorrow night and there will be light snow showers through the night and all day Saturday, but the wind will die down by Saturday morning. So for those transferring snow tyres or snow chains! The polar air will continue to chill us on Sunday with a mix of light snow and cloud, the wind will also return. Monday and Tuesdays forecast are still unsure but lets settle for sunny periods, light breezes and the odd light shower, but remaining cold.
The avalanche risk remains at 4 above 2200m for tomorrow.
Meanwhile the preparation for the Red Bull Linecatcher event is progressing - a whole load of Red Bull paraphernalia is accumulating at the top of the Grand Huit Chair - I am sure it will be spectacular but it will be a matter of timing as they wait for the weather and the avalanche risk to be suitable.

@Mark1863, Just spoken to someone who is going from Tignes to 3V nest week; unfortunately they have changed the system - to get a 3V pass you now need a voucher from the STGM office in Val Claret. You need to take your lift pass card, juscativ and ID to get the voucher - you then need all 4 at the 3V lift pass office. Seemingly, this is the last year of the deal unfortunately.

Well that's it. Done for another week. Apart from being colder than a brass monkeys .........
Was one of the best days I've ever had snow wise here. Fantastic on and off piste. Thinking of the lucky barsterawds who will arrive tomorrow when they get everything open. Guess the grand motte cable car is going to need a fair bit of de icing though...
Roll on 6th march. Hopefully a repeat of last years sunshine and fantastic pistes.

Had a load of admin to do today, so not been out. But I did meet a frozen gang in the Jam Bar who said that the snow was great but it was bone chillingly cold. That said the weather gnomes surprised up all with sunny periods this morning as the feature weakened a bit quicker than expected. This was good news for those flying but I saw there were a few accidents on the roads this morning. A mate also reported folks beyond airlifted from 'Golf' or 'the bus stop' down to ambulances at the helipad earlier today, I don't know why but as it has not made the papers yet I hope it is nor serious. The Red Bull Linecatcher has been cancelled - which is a pity as it would have made great footage and a good plug for the resort.
A few flocons have started flying past the window and this will pretty much carry on through the night and through tomorrow. The wind will pick up tomorrow though but there will be no increase in temperature so wrap up - exposed flesh could soon be at risk of frost nip if you go high. Monday will be much more benign, the freezing level will rise to 800m the wind will drop and the sun will be out. It will gradually cloud over in the afternoon ahead of light snow showers and cloud throughout Tuesday. Sunny periods and showers beyond that - but confidence in that forecast is low so anything could happen and probably will.
For those travelling tomorrow - cold and damp - so pray for a jetway to take you to the aircraft. Virtually the whole of the UK will have snow or sleet showers overnight but they should have stopped in time so that surfaces and planes can be cleared before the early take offs. It will then be misty and horrible for the rest of the morning but only a 40% chance of freezing fog at Luton to delay any flights. There may be more later as forecasts develop. At the alpine end of the journey there may be light snow showers at any of the 4 airports but unless one really kicks off nothing to curtail flying. But standby for a hangover clearing icy blast as you step off the plane!!

We are in Tignes this week. Arrived yesterday and først ski day today. It seems to have snowed a few cm during the night and looking out the Windows it is heavy clouds and snow. Think we will go for the trees in La Daille today. Is there any risk that we will not be able to go back due to wind? Anyway, have a great day anyone who is out in the weather today

Clearly Tigski has anti-freeze running through his veins! The light has been variable and we have had the odd snow shower - just like a couple at Geneva and Chambery which caused some delays. It has been windy which has redistributed the snow - the avalanche risk is 3 for tomorrow but still all the reasons in the World to be cautious.
The weather situation is very unpredictable at the moment - the surface pressure charts are more chaotic than a witches cauldron and changing every time the computer models are run. So forecasting beyond Wednesday would is virtually impossible. We will have a mostly clear and very cold night, but the wind will drop past midnight and the temperatures will rise a bit. We may see the sun in the morning but it will gradually cloud over from lift opening times. It will feel a good deal warmer than today with light wins and the freezing level at around 1000m. We may also see snow showers through the evening these will dissipate by Tuesday morning. Tuesday will be cloudy with temperatures and winds similar to Monday. The snow forecast yesterday now seems to be heading south of us. There may be the odd shower overnight into Wednesday which will also be cloudy. Later in the week looks mixed - we will have to wait and see.

Your certainly right about that! Looked at snow-forecast for next week as we arrive on the 23rd. Sunday/Monday was being forecast at +2c mid station. It's now below freezing and down to -5c on Tuesday Fingers crossed numbers stay in the right area, i.e. not too cold but still below freezing.

^ Thanks folks!
Having decided to follow my own forecast - it was an early start, the pisteurs were still finishing off making the Palafour area safe after the wind had rearranged everything yesterday. So up the Tov and down Creux which was deserted and in pristine condition. The light was fine under a milky sun which got better through the morning. It was cold (-12 or so) but mercifully there was no wind. Which was a good thing as The Marmottes Chair in Val had a technical issue and some people were aloft for quite some time. The snow around Grand Pre was also excellent on the piste - off piste is mostly tracked out with a mixture of conditions. After lunch we went up towards the GRand Motte, where the pisteurs are working hard to open the final runs that have been closed. By 3 o'clock the clouds had closed in and the light became poor - so back for a cuppa.
The good news is the forecast seems to be settling as high pressure seems to be developing over the Alps - so it will remain cool but with only light breezes.- unlike the Pyrenees - where it is raining and set to get warmer (live report from big sis!). We are expecting a few flocons overnight, enough to obscure the view through a windscreen, little more. There may be an odd sunny spell in the morning, the afternoon looks cloudy. The freezing level will be around 1000m for the next couple of days. Wednesday will also be cloudy and there may be a bit of snow in the air but that's it. Thursday should see the long awaited return of the sun up here - it may be foggy in the valleys, Friday should be similar. With the sun and the rise in the freezing level it will seem a lot warmer. It may then deteriorate on Saturday. The avalanche risk tomorrow will remain at 3 Marqué/Considerable.
RIP To the Brothers in Arms in Valfrejus.

We need a smiley for a very tired bear! Had a full day off piste with Evo2 today, 7 hours with a 30 min break for lunch!! But that did have HP Sauce in the breakfast ciabatta at the Jam Bar, so I am at one with Mr W
After decking us out with ABS bags we launched down the front of Palafour as a warm up and then it was to the Brevieres Sector where we had 3 fantastic runs down Glattier, The Chimney and the third run allowed me to become acquainted with a few 'Melezes' or larch trees. Great snow within the trees and there may be some photos later.... Its just a shame you can't make trees shorter when you get amongst the trees. Just before lunch we did an avalanche search practice above Petit Col - its fine learning how to use a transceiver in the training area - when you are on a 35 deg slope it concentrates the mind (once you have learnt to ignore the 'rogue' transceiver going past on a skier).
The afternoon was spent in Vallon de la Sache, unfortunately the light deteriorated so slowly slowly. Finally we tto on the trees enar Brev and its fair to say they probably won!! There were still flocons in the air as we finished. At this point I would reiterate that we were with a professional - so don't take the above as carte blanche to go tomorrow - there are still a lot of hazards out there with avalanche risk 3.
As for the weather tomorrow looks like a repeat of today with maybe a bit less wind on high. But the good news is for Thursday and Friday - high pressure means blue skies and sunshine with little wind and a freezing level at 1700m - so definitely a top coat less than today! Its a bit more complicated for Saturday as there is a band of snow not far from us - at the moment it is missing us so we should just have sunny spells - that may change though.
Going for a lie down!

Great days skiing today with some nice sunshine this afternoon. Although Santons was closed when we got to it which made getting into Val a bit more tricky? Anyone know when Santons run is likely to be open. It said it was closed due to avalanche risk but would hope they can make it safe overnight...?

@snowsam, Santons has not been open all season - I wouldn't bet on it opening soon but you never know......
And just when we thought we had had rockmageddon and snowmageddan we now have unionmageddon - the workers at The Carbone Savoie seem to be objecting to something by blocking the main road between Moutiers and Albertville (its that big smelly factory in the valley bottom).
The flocons didn't last long this morning and there were long sunny periods so we had a cruise down the newly opened Sache piste to Breviere as we were down early the moguls were only as big as wheelbarrows and not transit vans. There are still patches off nice snow off piste and people still taking immense risks, clearly skiing where 'our man' from yesterdays offpiste session had told us to steer well clear of. The pistes over to the Grand Pre are are still in perfect condition - and the microlights were flying for the first time in a fortnight which must be a good sign!!
And now for the good news - tomorrow and Friday will be sunny and much warmer with little wind - spring has sprung for 2 days!! The freezing level will be around 2000m by lunchtime - don't forget the Factor 30. Saturday will be a mixed bag - perhaps a shower or two in the morning , but mainly sunny periods in the afternoon. Sunday and Monday will remain warm for the time of year and will be mainly sunny with the odd cloud annoying the peaks.
Bon ski!
