You're quite right Chris. Thinking about it I'm not there long enough to waste time changing money up.

I do see where you are coming from though. It seems very odd that the rate of £ to Euro has gone from 1.25 ish to 1.18 in no time while the papers are still telling us that the Euro is in crisis!

I was a bit shocked I must admit. I started looking for at rates a couple of weeks ago as spending money is about all I've get left to sort out. It was around 1.23, then on Thursday I was in Tosco and thought I'd have a quick check, 1.18
At least I've paid in full for the accommodation in full when the rate was pretty good.

Anyone know what type of photo you need for the 8+ day PDS lift pass? I saw something that implied that they could scan your passport or driving licens ephoto but that is new to me.

Posidrive, yes, they can scan passport photos and, I presume, driving license photos.

Posidrive, my daughter and SIL bought their Les Gets/Morzine season passes online and scanned their own photos from passports and sent them with their online requests. Worked out fine.

Posidrive, Last time I bought an 8+ day pass they took my photo from inside the ticket office with a webcam type thing. Picture quality was lousy but it worked OK.

nwarnett, Cheers for the vid! I enjoy watching videos of people just having fun on the piste - especially when the production is half decent. This has got me in the mood for my trip to Morzine in March.

Hi all,
Please can someone (maybe Mr DJL) advise what the traffic is likely to be like out of Chatel on a Sunday evening (March 10th to be exact)? Is it likely to be ok, or is there normally gridlock with everyone trying to get back down? If so any advice on what a sensible time to leave before/after is?
Thanks,
Dave

davejsy, We usually head home on a Saturday (as does most of the world as that is the usual rental changeover day in Chatel).
Saturday 9th is our arrival day for the "lads trip" and as it is midway through the Paris holidays and at the end of the Zone A fortnight will be pretty busy I imagine. I think Sunday's are usually much quieter on the roads. Where are you heading for and what time will you be leaving? The roads down the mountain can get very busy with local traffic at the end of the ski-day (16.00-17.00) and then you meet all the other traffic heading from resorts to Lausanne, Geneva etc. on the motorway. This is fairly dependant on the conditions on the slopes and the weather as if it is poor the locals seem to stay at home.
Bison Fute has the 10th as a "green" day with normal circulation so I reckon you should be OK.

DJL, thanks for that. Our boat back to Jersey (from Saint Malo) is 3.30pm Monday, so we are planning on driving part way Sunday after skiing, so reckon we don't need to leave until 7ish so should be fine by then, especially as you say Bison Fute has it as a green day.
So you think in resort will be quite busy?
We are also over for a lads trip/weekend cleverly disguised to our other halves as my stag do part 1!

I have the perfect solution (though the designated driver may not agree). Pack most stuff Saturday night. Early start and ski until around 15.00. Shoot down to the car park, change, pack the rest of the gear and head to the Avalanche where the rugby (England v Italy) kicks off at 16.00. A couple of pints of apres and into the car to head up the motorway. As you will be leaving around 18.30 any day skiers will be gone and you get a clear run.
The atmosphere last year was fantastic though it was France v England with Sarkozy in the stand and loud boos round the bar whenever he came into shot (and that was only the French!).
It is the last of the busy weekends so I reckon it will be pretty hectic.

The other place to stick your nose in is Lidl in Cluses - which is at the bottom of the hill just as you come into Cluses from Taninges. They do a very good Cote du Rhones Villages for 1.89 euros. Very, very quaffable (they do three different Cotes du Rhones - buy the most expensive one).

We're going to Avoriaz with 2 kids and my parents. My parents would like to take the kids one day to Morzine "for a change of scenery" (i.e. buy them a truck load of toys and stuff them with candy till they burst )
2 questions: what's the best way (comfort and price wise) to get from Avoriaz to Morzine without skis? are there any recommended shops, food places etc for grand parents and 2 boys (8&4)?
|

sugardaddy, cable car down and then the "P" bus route to the centre of Morzine. Cable car is on the lift pass and the bus is free. The bus stops at the main Pleney lift in the centre of Morzine.
From the bus stop at Pleney you get off the bus, walk in the direction of travel and turn right onto street that takes you down to the tourist office. Turning left at that junction takes you to the Pleney lift.
Good general eating places:
- Beanies - coffee shop that does pasties and cake on the Rue de Bourg (turn right when you get to the tourist office and follow your now) - which is the street that runs down the hill from the tourist office to the town hall
- Mamas - eatery also on the Rue de Bourg that does fish and chips, pasta, burgers (and I think pizza) - good value, friendly and most people will find something they like
- the burger place - just on the corner as you turn right from the bus stop - very good burgers and absolutely fantastic hot chocolate
- l'Etale - on the street that runs down to the tourist office - good general restaurant. Very good, proper pizzas and "proper food" for the adults.
There is a very nice toy shop near the top of the Rue de Bourg - to the right on the "strange junction". There are a variety of "tourist tat" shops near the tourist office.
There is a small outdoor ice rink in the centre of town.
There is also a free "petit train" that runs between the Pleney lift and the Super Morzine lift. We often take visiting children "there and back" for the hell of it.

Just got back from three weeks in LG and had a great time.
Highlights, (apart from the snow and my skiing coming on dramatically) were
- Fab Sunday skiing Mont Chery followed by a hog roast at La Grande Ourse (sadly missed out on having dinner there due to a vomiting child but the other members of the party loved it)
- Chez Nannon in Lyon, you must book as it's tiny but the Côte de Boeuf is fantastic
- les fripouilles, the creche in LG is just wonderful, both of my kids loved it and they had loads of fun which allowed me to enjoy quite a few Irish Coffee's guilt free
But most importantly, and the person responsible for said dramatic skills improvement, Yannick (known to them as YaYa) at 360 Ski. Fabulous instructor and loads of fun, very good at choosing when to teach and when to hoon, plus he helps find your ski's under 40cm of snow.

That'll be Nyon. Lyon is about three hours drive away
And I'm very glad you enjoyed the place. One of my favourites and where we spent Christmas day.

FlyingStantoni, The location of the toy shop? When you say "strange junction" is that where Rue de Bourg meets Rue de la Crusaz, just down from the tourist info place? Will have to visit in March with Junior Bradders.

Could some of you provide some ammunition for me to influence my bonkers mate?
Most of the crew are flying to Geneva on 24/2, but there's one car - my pal, his two sons and one of their mates. They're hiring a car in the UK as his car's a bit unreliable. I said he'd best stop off and pick up some chains from a supermarket.
This is "a hassle", so what he's intending to do is park the car in Cluses and (wait for it) get a bus up to Essert Romand. This is loopy, isn't it? Is there a good place to pick some chains up on the way?

andy from embsay, why doesn't he get them in the UK? Or online even, totally hassle free.
Just out of interest is it possible to hire cars in the UK with winter tyres? They make such a huge difference....
|
|
|
|
|
|
andy from embsay, bit crazy but each to their own Lidl had chains in for about £20 in about 3 or 4 sizes but I guess he won't know til he gets the car what the wheel size will be.
I doubt it's possible to get a UK hire car with winter tyres.
|
|
|
|
|
|
andy from embsay, buy some chains, keep the receipt, probably never use them. Back to the UK get money back. Or use them and be grateful you bought them.
Cant lose really, the bus thing is mental.

Agree, buy the chains and have the comfort of knowing they are in the boot - return them afterwards, or is it not possible still to hire some in the UK? Our son used to hire a big car years ago when he and student friends used to come and use our chalet - they used to know what they were getting and then dug out chains from our cellar that were somewhere near what they needed - sometimes they worked sometimes they didn't! but could then pick up more locally if the size really was wrong. I wouldn't want to risk the journey without chains - and have been known to see cars the other side of Cluses needing to have chains on.
|
|
|
|
|
|
No need to panic at this stage. There is every chance that he won't need to use chains so if it is clear he can just drive up to Essert Romand. It is a bit further but a lower level road if he drives up via Bons en Chablais, Thonon and up the valley.
So long as it is clear on his way up to the village he can just park up and save all the bus hassle - no need to drive around during the week unless he wants to.
Then again you'll be hoping it is at least snowy to below village level so the best bet is to pick up some chains if the forecast suggests he might need them. Feu Vert, Norauto or a big supermarket should have them.
