Hey all,
Just back from Les Arc...wicked!
The snow that fell Sunday/Monday seemed to hang around for the entire week and the lack of any real number of people anywhere meant I was still finding the odd line of fresh in the trees on Friday =)
I think my favourite run was round the back of Comborciere (? pardon my French), little boot pack up the ridge to get a bit of speed then down lots of untouched snow, powder field, lots of jumps and little drops and through some pretty technical trees at the bottom..excellent. Also if you dropped off the cat track leading from the top of Comborciere down into 1650 I think (where the Cachette lift is - I only pay attention to the lifts not any run names or village names!) Lots of good snow all the way to the bottom.
We stayed in Peisey and it was real icy down there by wednesday but most other places was excellent. Didnt get up the Aiguille as it was quite a treck from Peisey and the face looked quite unstable with a fair chunk of snow above the traverse lines which looked threatening.
Great fun, thanks for all the updates on the weather and conditions.

Gorgeous day! The return of blue skies (which is nice as I haven't had many sunny days this season) and a sprinkling of ultra-light snow overnight, maybe 5-10cm. No lift queues and quiet pistes. Just perfect! I'll do a blog report this evening with lots of photos, but if you're having difficulty flying to the Alps today take heart that when you get here conditions are lovely.
snowcrazy, sorry I'm not able to join you to ski, as much as I would like to. I've got a BASI course later this season which I need to work towards, so I've spent the morning lapping around the Grand Melezes blue doing tedious drills. After lunch I'll be doing more of the same. Ditto tomorrow, then I fly back to the UK. Back here in March, with a bit of luck, so hope to catch up with you then.

tomstickland, just had a look at your Flickr photos (coz we're off to Peisey on Saturday as long as Easyjet fly out of Liverpool!) can't believe that for the first time EVER I've seen someone with the same boots as me!!!!!!!!
If they are the same, they look like Rossignol Freeride (or free spirit... somethin like that...can't remember exactly the name) but I got mine in Val Thorens at the end of 2001 for about 100 quid in a sale. Absolutely killed me for the first 3 holidays but after custom moulded footbeds they're like slippers!!!
Getting a bit soft for me now though... still, been great boots, I love em.

...and whilst I'm still here, what are overall conditions like for Peisey, Les Arcs and Paradiski?? We're arriving on the 16th for a week, should we be praying for more snow or will whats there hopefully be enough?
Cheers people,
Dom

northy014, we are in Les Arcs 2000. What about getting trains/buses etc from Geneva? Is this an easy option? It's not actually for me,as I'm arriving with another pal on the chartered flight, but we have 2 guys flying from Manchester.....

genepi, Will take a guess that the photo was taken last Wednesday. Heavy cloud at Peisey level (1600M) the whole way through the valley and above that was sunshine. It was extradionary to look at

christinelondon, Mobiles phones work great in the mountains, far better than in any city I have visited.
|
|
|
|
|
|
christinelondon, don't put mobiles in the same pocket as your liftpass if the lift system uses the "hands free" technology. I did this for a couple of days over Christmas and eventually a "Lifty" took pity on me undergoing elaborate gyrations to get the pass close enough to the read and suggested I stash my phone somewhere else! The interference from the phone is enough to confuse the readers sometimes.
Vodafone appears to work like a charm in La Rosiere and the 3V, which is not all good news, as it's a work mobile, so they can always get hold of me!

The Flying Snowplough, Best in the whole of Les Arcs and La Plagne to put your lift pass in your left sleeve pocket (if you have one, down near the cuff) not breast pocket.

The Flying Snowplough, A €20 note also has the same effect, the pass is best kept in the left trouser pocket on it's own, according to signs in the lift pass offices.

I always find top left chest pocket (sole occupancy) works v. well for my paradiski pass - although there is always that frisson of doubt after an on-line re-charge when you get to that first lift of the holiday...
Mobiles work well in all of the domain: as above, sometimes too well. Mind you nothing gains you brownie points like answering a customer query from the top of a mountain (you do however have to let them know you are on leave, but because you care, you've taken their call)!

barthez1980, not sure about trains or buses, however try whiterides.co.uk, they run transfers in the area. Otherwise I don't know if I can help as I'm in the Peisey side.

Barthez 1800, this English company, based in Bourg St Maurice, now runs a successful transfer system from all the airports nearby -

For comparisons sake, my son caught a bus from Aime to Geneva with Altibus and the approximate price is over 80 euros return!

If general info then thousands of posts on here on 'driving to the alps' - google or forum search.
If resort specific knowledge then
1) Make sure they access via chambery, albertviller, moutiers, bourg st. maurice - sat navs can sometimes route via mountain passes and the obvious one is a piste in La Rosiere in the winter
2) Stock up on booze/food in the super U next to the McD's roundabout in BourgSt M before driving up the hill
3) try and book a car parking space with their accommodation, as otherwise will have to pay car park tax.

Don't follow sat nav to Vallandry, and then insist it's right when one of your passengers points out you're making a 1.5 hour detour.
Note: Only coach drivers are this stupid.
