Sorry, as an afterthought noticed the run thru the trees you mentioned, can anyone else recommend some nice runs for us (preferably over the Grindelwald side)??? We are a group that are comfortable on all blues and some reds (although 2 of our group are 15yrs+ advanced skiiers so a recommendation or 2 for them would be welcome as well)

I'm going 4 weeks on Saturday - can't wait,,,have never been to Wengen but from DG Orf's descriptions it sounds magical
So what's the best run in your opinion? I'll go and do a star rating when I get there!

Yes it is, was there a few years ago with Club Med and going again on 5th March this time to Grindelwald, an adjacent and linked resort.
I am sure that you have read this thread in detail and what more can one add!. Nearly all are red/blue type runs. What standard are you?. Note that the cablecar up to Murren is closed until about 12th March. For tougher psites head for the top of the Lauberhorn lift and then the runs to Kleine Scheidegg or to Wixi ( following the World downhill course ). Also the north facing run from Eigergletscher to Salzegg. The resort is linked with Grindelwald - go there and try the First area which is easy intermediate. Or try the runs from Mannlichen down to the mid-station of the gondola up from Grund. At the moment there is good snow and you should be able to go to the bottom on the easy blue/red runs.
Enjoy and report back - I need to have the on-the-ground information for my trip there in 4 weeks time.

Brian T, just take it easy, relax, don't get into the back seat, and when you get to the bottom, look back up the slop to see what you've just done.

Report from Wengen today, Ìm sitting in Rocks Bar by the post office in Wengen typing this, buy a drink and get 30mins use of the internet included, after a couple of days of fresh snow, the weather is once again glorious, fantastic skiing throughout the area.
Charlatanefc, take the train from Grindelwald up to Kline Schidegg and ski down the Blue back to Grindelwald, No.22 Mettlen is the route you want, its about 8.5km so stop at Brandegg on the way down and have an apple fritter or two.
Brian T, Oh God looked great today with about 20cm of fresh powder on the top, if you can wait until theres fresh snow the run will be much nicer

Inga, from Jersey !!........me too.....
How are you getting to Wengen from the rock and why Wengen and not a higher resort within the region?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Hi Chris!
Jersey's a small place huh!
Flying to Gatwick, staying the night there then early flight to Geneve...coach to Wengen.
Have been to lots of resorts and fancied Wengen for a change, plus am taking my Mum who is a shall we say "more sedate" skier than me so thought somewhere classy and not too high folluting would be nice.
Beats being on the rock anyway!!!!!!!!!!
Which resorts do you like to go to?
|
|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
The resort i mostly go to is the one opposite Wengen... Murren !
What made you go by coach from Geneva Airport ? package deal ?
Heres a link to some pictures i took around Murren this year (thanks to WTFH 4 hosting) http://skiing.wtfh.com/ChrisBrookes.htm
If you get time its worth a visit and do take your skis as you can ski back down to Lauterbrunnen, weather permitting

Just got back from Grindelwald, about 2 hours ago. What a fantastic place!! Did that no 22 run, and you ain't kidding about it being 8.5km, seemed more like 28.5km Loved the area, the town of Grindelwald was fantastic, skiied into Wengen a couple of times and had a beer in the Saloon bar round the corner from the train station. It seems like I'm finally coming on as well, Jungfrau did wonders for my confidence, only done 2 blue runs all week, we were on reds all week, and even had a go of the red/black World Cup Downhill Run We ended our long weekend last night with a few beers and schnapps in the Wigwam on Kleine Schidegg, and left there about 5:45pm to ski down the long red into Grund in near darkness to get the train back up the hill. A fantastic weekend, and I will post the piccies on me fotopic site as soon as I get the chance.

Chartlatanefc - Look forward to seeing the pics - you can now post the pics on the new snowMedia site ( a new Snowheads feature just inaugurated a fews days ago ). See the Piste section and click on the thread for snowMedia.
Did you go over to the First area and what was the snow like there?

Thanks, unfortunately not, with the main cable car being out of action over there we didn't bother. We were actually looking to stay in Murren, but with the afforemention cable car prob we chose Grindelwald instead (we couldn't find anywhere in Wengen)

Unfortunately we didn't, we were only there for 3 days. We stayed in the Bel Air Eden and found a shortcut to the railway station which made the train about 30 yards from the hotel door, and the Cable car to the 1st region is right at the other end of town so we never made it. We are planning to go again tho next year to see the rest of the area.

Yes, we did Wixi, and the black at Gummi was not open. Favourite run was the Red from the top of Kleine Schidegg, which joins the long blue to Wengen. That run fom the top to where the Wasch Bar is is the nicest I have yet skiied. Worst experience of the week tho, was being trapped on the Arven chairlift for 50 minutes, twas bloody cold![/b]

Charlatanefc, I was once on the Innerwengen lift for well over an hour when the motor failed, eventually they wound us back down by hand and we had to walk to Wengen, Conditions here still very nice but its bit busy with all the locals up this week

Inga, the Tipi at Kleine is the best bar during the day. They also do a great "megaburger" if you haven't eaten for about a week.

Inga - have a great trip - Wengen is addictive. Sylvie's bar in the Silberhorn is small, cosy and you may find some Snowheads there! The Tanne bar in the main street hums. The bar in the Sunstar Hotel is usually fun after dinner. There is a Ski Club rep who you can ski with for a day without becoming a member and get an orientation of the resort. If you are an advanced skier then go for Black Rock (after lunch on the terrace at Eigergletcher where the views are fantastic) when the sun has warmed it up. Oh God! is also a tough run.
I was there last week and we just skied powder for most of the time. Worth taking a guide to justify the off-piste. The White Hare is a famous run but you definitely need a guide. You can ski the entire Lauberhorn Race course if you want and there are guided runs at a recreational pace! The food at Scheidegg railway restaurant is excellent - worth booking in high season. Also go to Grindelwaldblick - a pisted run down from the top of the Lauberhorn chairlift - great views. Wengernalp restaurant/hotel is worth stopping at for a hot chocolate or drink on the way home - one of the best views of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau from the terrace but I personally would not recommend lunch - maybe the chef had a bad day last week....

Ooh, that would not have been a nice experience. Friday was fantastic, the slopes were deserted, saturday and sunday were MUCH busier, could probably do with Wixi and the lift next to it changed to 4 man chairs as there was awful queues on Sunday

Inga, they usually advertise their programme in hotels. They will have a meeting time/place - you turn up and join them!! They will (should) have different ability levels catered for on different days, so if you're a beginner, don't turn up on the day that they're doing the world cup run!! They also have a social hour where you can catch up with them.
Check out the ski club website for more details.

Flights Only 45 CHF per person with a guest card, free from your hotel, mind you its raining lightly here at the moment, but its forecast to gradually change to snow over the next 48hours, a little rain is not a bad thing as it will help the new snow stick to the worn older snow, Snowis getting a bit hard on the more used runs but still in fair to good condition in many of the less used areas, the blue from Schidegg to Brandegg is still excellent as is the Tschuggen run to Aspen, some of the mannlichen runs and parts of the Lauberhorn are a bit hard though
