Lou, FastEddie, bernie_lomax, if you meet up for a snowHead cheeky drink at the Yeti, don't forget to stand in front of the fence next to the chairlift and wave at the web cam for all us poor s0ds stuck at home. |
I'm game for that! i'll have to look out for the cam, is there a url for the web cam i would like to pass it around some friends? I think my chalet has internet access so can check here tomorrow once i arrive.

endlessride, sweet! Heard about Grand Terche from Joe Beer but never been up there.
Shame about the Audis. And am I right in thinking the number plates are German? Tragic

Yes, all German. I think this had something to do with the reason I was so keen to publish the pictures. By all accounts they were dealing with the problem in a very "German" way.

Those of us with any "style" in that film are definitely "old skool"!

endlessride - "old skool" as in "oh look, there are skiers using technique to ski off-piste rather than a snowboard on each foot"

I am a carving god. *
We mainly skied in Avoriaz today - starting off with a couple of laps of Zore (Super Morzine), before heading over to Hautes Fortes; the (guide dog) bumps in fornet; Linderats (tarte tatin as good as ever) before heading back.
Probably one of my best days of the season. Fabuous snow everywhere - either icy, but not too icy - or slushy, but not too slushy. I'd taken the precaution of sorting out the edges on my slalom skis and, as a result, had an absolute blast. The snow was amazingly grippy and there had been a lot of grooming - so Coupe du Monde could be (largely) carved top to bottom ^.
The bumps in Fornet were...well...interesting. Nicely the right side of not icy, but not quite slushy. The only problem is that you couldn't see a thing for the first half of the run. Thanks to David Murdoch's little bit of coaching the last time I saw him, though, I still managed a good few zip lines. The whole experience was very instructive and, I must admit, that had I not been skiing in a group I would have stayed there all afternoon working on my bumps
Anyway, as I say, I am an absolute carving god. *
The perfect end to a perfect day was three more laps of Zore - taken at speed top to bottom. I only decided to quit because, on balance, my "luck" in having worked out which way eratic skiers were going to turn was only going to run out
* E&OE
^ A skier more guts wouldn't have chickened out at the sharp left hand bend that drops suddenly

Oh, and everything was in superb condition. I saw only one spot showing signs of wear - just at the bottom of the long road returning to Avoriaz from the Fornet bowl.
(Telemark again tomorrow, so I'll be nowhere near as smug.)

Sounds like a blast, FlyingStantoni! Did you choose Avoriaz because of the rising temperatures or just for a change?
Wise move to quit while you were ahead, I'm sure. I've made it a personal rule never to go for that last "one more run" cos that's the one where you're just past your best and don't really enjoy it, or collide with some fool who really is past their best.

FlyingStantoni, I can only concur with your report - simply BRILLIANT skiing all around Les Gets today. Grippy as hell in the morning, beautifully soft in the afternoon. Some flakes of snow too!

Grim day today with rain in resort and cloud higher up, but for those of you heading out at the weekend fresh powder up top which meant more GREAT skiing at the top of the domaine! More to come at the end of the week so all good news!

Thanks Lou - husband has gone to Samoens to scan the lift queues and see if he can spot them or see if they have been taken back to the ski shop!

How long to Samoens by car at this time of year? We've only done it in the summer which was a lovely drive up the Choucas run and down to the left.
When we are in LG at Easter we are hoping to go to Flaine for a day as haven't got there this year. I'm guessing about an hour or bit less.

We left LG at 8.20, arrived Samoens about 8.50, huge queue for the gondola and our hearts sank - but then realised it hadn't actually started to run and as soon as it did the queue cleared. We had to get our passes, unload the car so were probably going up around 9.10 and were over in the middle of Flaine by about 9.45 to 9.50 - I only know all these times as we were due to meet our friends at 10.30 and we had time for a quick run and then a leisurely cup of coffee.
The visibility over there was very hit and miss - when it was clear it was very, very nice and when it clouded in it was not - but always worse when you are not skiing on your home ground.
The drive over the top from LG down to Samoens in the summer is lovely, quite agree.

Chamossiere was closed on Saturday as the piste is creeping. Even then people were ignoring the sign and skiing both the piste and off-piste.
There was a full-depth avalanche on Sunday or Monday on Nyon. The release happened during the day and wasn't skier triggered - it was a spontaneous release on an avalanche risk 3 day. It covered the piste below, requiring both a beacon and full probe search of the area in case anyone had been caught. Fortunately no one was caught in it.
Without wanting to sound like my mother, the piste closed signs are there for a reason. Not, as some people seem to think, to "save the piste".
Ski safely everyone.

Lou,
I like that weather forecast (a little bit of sunshine over the weekend would be nice), though this doesn't paticularly agree with the forecasts at j2ski and weather.com
In 27 hours I shoot out of work, nip over to Liverpool Airport, easyjet, transfer, in Morzine by midnight. Fours days hard skiing and back in bed for midnight Monday.
Can't wait!

Looked as if Chamossiere is open today - the lift was running, but we didn't go over that way.
Big fall of snow just below the Viking Hotel, clearly seen from the Atray lift, and blocking the track that runs along that way.
Oinky was out being very sociable by the bottom of the Fys lift - joining the queue at the barrier at one point.
