Don't you mean the blue run down to San Cassiano? Sure you can't ski direct to La Villa from Piz Sorega?

There is a blue down from bottom of Bamby lift
The last bit joins the end of the red and is a bit steeper.
It can be bumpy when things are warm.

@defnekasrat, hopefully you still enjoyed the day and will laugh about it over a drink tonight.
We plan to take a friend who is new to the area around the SR orange tomorrow. I’ve told them if we’re not at the lift in La Villa at 8:30 then we don’t do it.

@Scooter in Seattle, I think the first day excitement got the best of us but made it back in one piece so thats good the next couple days we’ll keep it chill for sure
@richb67, oh it was great. my bad knee got the worst of it though. I need to get better at managing mogul-y runs. but great laughs and memories!

@defnekasrat, I literally haven't worn a coat last 3 days skiing exclusively 2000 - 3000m
The other problem with insulated jackets in heat is if you sweat into them they're a pain to clean

Started the day from Piz Sorega with great conditions. But we made a mistake by overestimating how fast we could be while doing the Green Sella Ronda but a couple of wrong turns, detours and very slow service at lunch left us stuck in Arabba, and we couldn’t finish in time to get to Corvara If any of you guys saw a group of miserable people at the taxi stop in Arabba, that was us Morning was great but yes, after a while a couple of pistes were in not so good condition. super bumpy, steep and slushy. I’m exhausted! Also it really was quite warm.
I spotted a Snowheads banner on my way up to Arabba I think! |
Aagh! It is only about 3hrs skiing. You must have got seriously lost!
I did the anti-clockwise with my son a few weeks back from Pian Frataces car park above Canazei. Didn't get going until 9.30ish, we stopped for coffee at Bec de Roces, diverted up the Edelweiss Valley at Colfosco, had a plate of ribs at Jimmy's Hutte, played repeatedly on the fun park and boardercross below Piz Sella, watched the dancing girls for a bit at Piz Seteur and still back at the car before 4pm!
Next time you'll know the route and follow the signs!!
Still, great memories...do you remember the time we got lost on the Sella Ronda...??

Temperature in Bruneck is 20C today but that's based on website. When looking at forecast Cortina seems colder with some fresh snow in the next days. What are best places in the neighborhood (dolomites) to go to when it's too warm in Bruneck? I've been to Kronplatz only and we are heading there again on Friday so trying to have a backup plan if the snow at lower stations is bad (my son will be practicing snowboarding so the plan is to stay on 106 Korer gondola).

I suspect yesterday might have been more of a problem with Sunday queues.
We did the green circle today starting about 11 am and diverting down the Saasolongo and had no problem getting round. There were virtually no queues. We are not quick skiers.
Pistes conditions remain pretty good, though it certainly bumps up a bit as the day progresses on the busier sections which when they get busy certainly ski harder than their nominal gradings.

On my list of things to do / places to go is Drei Zinnen
I can’t tell you what it is like but from Bruneck you can take the train direct to the slopes. I hear that you need to check at which station to get off the train to give direct slope access

Pistes similar to yesterday but it seemed to cool later on as some of the slushy parts had frozen by the end of the day. We were still able to find some blues in good condition this pm but as usual popular routes were a bit rubbish.
Popped around the SR clockwise (orange), joined in Corvara at 9:20 and needed to be back around La Villa for 2pm, moderately bad queues at quite a few lifts. Ca 10 mins at some. At Sole in val Gardena there was a scrum so we decided enough was enough and took the un signposted blue down to plan de gralba, much nicer than messing with the crowds. So 4.5 hrs to do the SR, slower than normal but did have a couple of decent coffee stops and our newbie loved it all.

A few days ago snow and cold was forecast by several models for the Dolomites from Sunday 11th.
When some gloom generally that all that was breaking down.
But that still looks good according to GFS and ECMWF.

@luigi, I think we made the mistake of not putting SC to Corvara and back times in to consideration. And wanted a quick bite but ended up with the slowest service.
Also, we were just near finishing but found the signage on top of La Pale Charlift (6) very confusing and ended up doing the very bumpy amd steep red down to the same chairlift That’s when we knew we messed up because the lift guy told us the 1 lift (23) we had left was closed already.
Yesterday we kept everything supet chill, cruised the blues around SC, Colfosco and Corvara. Had one of the best pastas and grapp I’ve had at Jimmi’s. The blues were in very good shape, even until late afternoon. The weather got VERY warm at one point, I had sweat dripping even with only a base layer and jacket on.
My husband a guided off-piste trip, they climbed on top of Sass Pordoi or somewhere around there (I think) and skied down, and he was extremely happy with the conditions and the experience. Today, they are doing another one.

Clicking on an ECMWF meteogram for the Sella Ronda at 1,500m altitude, it looks very promising. From this Friday for at least 9 days, temperatures ranging between +3c to -15c. Precipitation this Friday to Monday coinciding with freezing air temperatures.

Definitely colder today. Pistes lovely this morning but SR not great this pm, pretty much like normal.
Had a busy day skied from La Villa to Seceda, down La Longia and then back via green SR so our SR newbie had done both ways. She loved the morning but not the afternoon, we all wish we’d skied La Longia again and come back via Selva.
Was quiet until we hit Selva at ca 10:15 then very busy, so much so that we decided to grab an unscheduled snack at Seceda to see if the crowds subsided. They did a little but La Longia was the busiest we’ve seen it. Nice condition though as was Sasslong ca 10:30, absolutely lovely. Nearly got stranded when our planned route back was closed so we had to double back on ourselves. Alta Badia is very quiet at 16:40 ! Decided to gondola down as it was 16:45 and that was lift closure time. However noticed that La Rua ( lift at the bottom of the red and blue into La Villa) was still running at almost 5 so we could have skied down. All others around had stopped but presumably they apply a bit of leeway, worth knowing.

It’a our first ever trip to the Dolomites later this month, staying in Corvara.
A question for Sella Ronda regulars, if conditions are good everywhere, from Corvara would you ski the circuit clockwise or anti-clockwise?

I don't think there is a big difference, maybe slightly less queueing and better snow anticlockwise judging by this weeks experience. It does feel like it takes a while to get going though as you need about five lifts till you get above danterciepes.

I know this overview is a couple of days out of date (the updated position will be available later today) but the following should make for an interesting week ahead for Italy:
Snow Overview - Tuesday 6 February 2024
Italy
Italy is in for a seriously fun (meteorologically speaking) week. The Jetstream shifts its track from over northern Europe to the Mediterranean, but as it does it “fractures”, allowing, if only for the briefest of moments, warm and moist air from the Mediterranean to bubble up and meet cool air from the north. This happens at just the right time for a storm system to move in off the Atlantic.
All this is effectively the perfect recipe for one thing: snow. Warm air moving north hits the Italian Alps, where the lack of foothills means weather is forced to rise and cool really quickly. Add in the extra cooling effect of warm air to the north and Italy will be drenched in silly soft stuff.
The Dolomites will be the biggest beneficiaries of this. A foot of snow might be expected on each of Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Madonna di Campiglio as the freezing line drops to between 1,500m and 2,000m. This snow will fall up and down the hill to, especially on Friday and Saturday when the freezing line stays closer to 1,500m.
Good snow will fall across the Italian Alps, however, with the Via Lattea joining Madonna with 40cm of snow between Friday and Sunday. Conditions in the West will be boosted as the weekend closes as the freezing line drops off a cliff, hitting close to 500m first thing Monday morning as cold air moves in from the north.
More settled conditions will move in to start the new week, with more snow on the long term horizon.

Visited Kronplatz today. Bumps and slush on anything that wasn’t level. Quite warm but not as bad as it has been. Also very busy. Good practice but the worst piste conditions we’ve seen in our 4 weeks. 10 days ago it was heaven, nice pistes and very quiet.
On a positive note our improvers had a full day lesson from La Villa which involved the blues around Alta Badia and lunch at Colfosco. They loved it and came back with massive grins. They were also proud to be the last ones back

Hey @richb67, who are you using for all day lessons?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@stellaps, We’re using La Villa ski school but for adult lessons the standard at most local schools is Mon to Fri 10-1 but full day Thursday (so no adult group lessons on a Sunday). So depending on ability they might do e.g. The SR on the full day or just stay in AB.

@stellaps, Strangely there are two ski schools at La Villa, plus I believe one at Badia. Check cancellation policies as ours was no penalty if more than 24 hrs
I believe they do kid’s lessons all week and have the option of all day. They definitely do in Corvara as my instructor had full day kids from 10 every day. I assume La Villa is the same because Colfosco, Corvara and one La Villa school are all run by the same guy.
The full day kids go all over the place, ability dependent of course. I mainly do lessons 8:30 to 10 and my Corvara instructor would be checking out the weather to decide where to take them, one day they were going to do the Marmolada but he changed his mind as it looked too windy.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@richb67, Their cancellation policy is a bit require 21 days notice for a refund. It’s just the one 2 hour private lesson as we were trying to use his usual instructor who wasn’t available anyway. I’ll look into a school nearer us for further lessons. Thanks
