Question to everyone familiar with Fieberbrunn:
We'll be there end of Jan with 9 people. Are there any restaurants to recommend or avoid with a bigger group?

@sandviper, go to Hansi (“Hansi’s Best-Price”, next but one to Bobby’s Pub at the bottom of the main village street).
Hansi has good equipment, speaks fluent English, owns his own business, and is always willing to offer a competitive price. He is also very helpful if you have any problems.
He is a friendly guy and will no doubt offer you a welcome schnapps from the bar in his shop.
Mention my name (Tatman) and that I sent you to him for an additional discount on the price. (There’s no commission for me, but he does do me occasional favours) |

I booked Hansi online, took the 20% discount and put a comment in that @tatman had recommended i book with him. He replied to the booking and would sort when i collect, in meantime i was happy with their package and discount as was, any extra is cake on top

@freefall - i did the reservation - it's fully cancellable, cant recall if they billed already (don't think they did).
@donnie75 in Saalbach - from @tatmantours post "...Hansi (“Hansi’s Best-Price”, next but one to Bobby’s Pub at the bottom of the main village street)...." basically there is a row of shops next to Bobby's pub on Unterdorf (street name) in Saalbach

@donie75, not ski hire per se but some shops are recommended on page 10 under the last of the photo's. This was connected with buying skis but they will no doubt hire.
If you want to hire in Saalbach there is a free bus that runs between the two areas very frequently. Hop on that.
I've used this site in the past although not for Austria. Worked many times for France and Andorra where I hired for my son.

Hinterglemm has several - depends on your price sensitivity and need for top level kit.
1. Hervis - cheap and cheerful, book online for low prices. Tends to be new kit every year but my impression is that it is all entry level stuff rather than top-end or anything specialised like all mountain skis, fat skis, etc. We used them for several years after our kids refused to go to ski school because they could easily keep up with us, and had no issues.
2. Gumpold - several locations, top kit and top prices
3. Intersport Breitfuss - my preference in Hinterglemm as they also have top kit and top prices, but have been very good when I've been there in the past and they also spotted a problem with my own skis when they went in for a service and hired (then sold) me replacements and were good to deal with throughout.
4. Ski schools - most also have hire kit, and will do you a package of ski school, equipment and a (full price) pass which is slightly cheaper than hiring separately. It also likely guarantees that the instructor won't tell you to take your rubbish/inappropriate skis back and change them Snow&Fun, Activ and some others have hire stock, and I've had no issues when using them
There are others (Rabbit on the road to the Zwolferkogel, several on the main road between Saalbach and Hinterglemm) but I have no experience of them.
Prices are likely to be strangely similar (!) for all of them except Hervis.

@ousekjarr, or anyone else for that matter, while we're talking about skis, any recommendations for servicing in Hinterglemm please? Preferably on the east side rather than west by the Zwolfer.
Thanks.

Thanks folks. My preference is to rent in Hinterglemm near our hotel. We have a group so it’s easier to do it locally.

@Boofont, Breitfuss would be my recommendation, on Haidweg - in the pedestrian area, just off the main street.

@donie75, iirc you're staying in the new hotel where the old London Pub/Tanzhimmel burned down several years ago, in which case both Breitfuss and Gumpold are within 100 yards, and from either the U-bahn or Reiterkogel are about 50 yards further

How bad/busy is it going to be in Saalbach this half term (10/02 - 17/02)? Since there are Dutch school holidays, Fasching, Bavarian school holidays, many Austrian regions school holidays, it seems like it would be absolute mayhem.
Haven't booked anything yet since we initially had planned to go skiing/boarding this half term, but after a great trip pre-Christmas, the itch is there again.
Figured that since everywhere will be rammed, might as well go somewhere that has the infrastructure to deal with large crowds and is overall great.
How bad does it get during the busiest periods? (e.g. New Year week)

@ski_free, it is always the case that >95% of accommodation in Saalbach and Hinterglemm will be fully booked throughout February. This is the peak of the season - when the UK half term holidays clash with Fasching and the Dutch/Danish/Czech holidays, the only difference is how quickly the accommodation runs out.
On the mountain, it makes no difference - it will be busy in places, and at specific times (e.g. when ski schools are starting from Schonleitenbahn at 0930), but generally queues will form only where a lift is stopped for a couple of minutes due to a mechanical issue or e.g. a pile-up on the exit of a chairlift, and in ~10 years of going only at half term the worst queue I experienced took 10 minutes, and a "typical" queue was 1-2 minutes at pinch points.
Alms will be busy throughout - if you want to eat at 1 then you'll need a reservation. If you leave it until 2, there's no need but you may also find some options on the menu sold out. If you stop early at e.g. 12 then you cross over from the coffee stops to lunch and it can also be busy.
The other factor is day visitors - there are extensive car parks to cope with people coming for the day, but the reality is that this is primarily at weekends, and day visitors are also very aware of peak weeks and will avoid February if they can.

@ousekjarr, Thank you for the feedback. Overall doesn't sound too bad. Only drawback is the place I wanted to book just went.
Just have to keep my eyes peeled for potential cancellations as the 28 day free cancellation period that many hotels have ends soon.

@MoriD, “ Question to everyone familiar with Fieberbrunn:
We'll be there end of Jan with 9 people. Are there any restaurants to recommend or avoid with a bigger group?”
My favourite in Fieberbrunn is the very traditional, Austrian “Wildalpgatterl”. Good typical Austrian menu, excellent home made bread, and generally a nice feel to it.
I used to avoid the big, busy Streubodenalm at the top of the Streuboden gondola, but I joined some friends for lunch there last season and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality and quantity of my helping of gulasch soup.
But my second favourite is the Hochhörndlhütte just over on the Reckmoos Sud side. Feels a little off the beaten track (but don’t know why), good food, homely, cosy atmosphere, and great views.
Down in the valley, between the Reckmoos Sud side of Fieberbrunn and the Reiterkogel, so next to the bottom station of the TirolS gondola, at the bottom of pistes 124 and 125, is the Pulvermacher Almhütte. I don’t use it as often as I would like, as I always seem to be rushing past it on the way to Fieberbrunn or Saalbach, but on the couple of occasions that I have been in there I’ve loved it - friendly service, good food, good prices, nice atmosphere.

Thanks @Boofont, I saw that. It conflicts with other websites, though given it’s the official one I would put more store in that. Was hoping maybe there were some ‘boots on the ground’ there to say one way or the other.

@dunc999, slightly delayed response but in answer to your question - the conditions are near perfect on piste at the moment. It snowed Saturday and Sunday and a little on Monday, some great off piste and on piste riding. Then the sun came out but the temps stayed low so optimum conditions for the foreseeable future. The snow cannons are all going to increase the base level. Fingers crossed it stays this way for your trip

As transfers are often a topic on this thread (and we had a discussion today about how internet comments are inevitably biased towards people complaining) I thought I'd share a positive story! Booked private transfers ages ago with www.austriatransfer.com for our trip in 2w. Today was collating various confirmation emails for flights/parking/transfers etc and realised that I had booked the return transfer for the time our flight ARRIVES in london rather than when it departs Salzburg! Sent apologetic email, fully expecting some tutting and air-sucking and fees to adjust the booking..... Not a bit, within 20 minutes a lovely email back with a confirmation for new times and an "enjoy your trip".
Combined with a no quibble cancellation 2y ago when my youngest got covid, and excellent friendly transfer last year, this is how you keep my business!

@Kramer, “How busy is Saalbach likely to be the week of the 9th of March please?”
Obviously no one can say in advance with certainty, but I would hazard a guess that, like most years, the second week of March is likely to be an excellent choice - back into relatively uncrowded low season, but still early enough for a prospect of good conditions.
(And, in case anyone’s interested, I happen to know of a perfectly located apartment that is currently available throughout March.)

My better half wanted the assurance of booking with Hansi online ahead of time. I did mention Tatman's name in the comments but I suspect I will not get a further discount other than the 20% from ordering ahead online. Got two pairs of premium skis for 279.84 but I would love to know what someone got from just walking in and mentioning Tatman ( always useful ammo the next time I am told I chose something wrong )

@Freefall, your suspicion may be unfounded. Hansi is very flexible, and he is very unlikely to deny you his best price, whether booking online or by walking into his shop. And I haven’t had any reports of anyone being refused the extra discount for mentioning that I recommended his shop.

Just back from a week in Saalbach at the wonderful Alpinresort hotel. Visited Hansi for the usual Schnapps and ski service and he did mention how much business that he gets through Tatman's recommendations. Apres ski was booming at Hinterhag, Bauers, Spitz and Bergi's. A little quiet at the Soul House. Snow was fantastic after last weekends snowfall. RAF were also in the area on a skiing jolly for 3 weeks!
