Perfect day! Also just discovered that the snack bar at the top of the Peisey lift now has inside seating & loos! Although with the view from there, it would take pretty grim weather to get me inside (where there is also a wood-burning stove for cold days)

Quick update on the afternoon snow. It is indeed hard on the runs into 1800, although the off the side of the piste ,albeit tracked, very nice. But snow conditions in the 2000 bowl significantly different (ie better) on piste, even in the shadows late afternoon. Whereabouts are you staying Piemonster ?
We saw an avalanche happening above Arondlieres at about 1.10, with the slide appearing to mainly stop on the red path down from the top, although some did get as far as the track round from the top of Varet. Beyond that appeared to be areosol only. There were tracks above the fault line, in the gully to the right of the cable car.
Hopefully no one was caught in it, but sobering as we'd been there 30 min prior. Any news anyone?

We've had an 8 day skier with us this week, and we've been out at 9.15 everyday without issue. This ' hard snow' which snowcrazy is on about...he's right there are patches, but they are only patches. As for stones, well we didn't get any going down to le grange, albeit that was Tues, and there was an odd one on Malgovert. But generally SC does try to ensure people are not only getting the very positive side of things. Don't be fooled into thinking it's a bloodbath out here. It isn't.
Now I need to get out into the glorious sunshine of today!

Thanks arctic roll much appreciated. Looking like next week is going to be very warm for January and not much snow forecast, I'm out the week after so would really appreciate updates from both you and snowcrazy, cheers. Glad to hear it's just patches so far.

@Charliee, the siren went off immediately: (we were at the top of Col de la Chal so couldn't contribute anything from there) and we saw a number of people in the vicinity who appeared to be engaged in either investigating or continuing to ski.

@arcticroll
The new block (December iirc) just left as you get off Cabriolet.
Didn't see the avalanche, but noticed a helicopter investigating the upper snowfields below Aguille Rouge late this afternoon.

As others said piste conditions best in the top bowl. Pistes getting hard down into 1600 and 1800. Did the long run down from Aguille Rouge to Villaroger at 1200m today and very enjoyable all the way down. Small stones appearing on the piste lower down with the pistes generally good although hard like at 1800 and 1600. Cold enough for snow cannons to run at Villaroger. Looks like there is a decent base on-piste cross almost the whole area so set up well for more snowfall.

BLUE SKY POWDER DAY! Just what I like!
First another fast ski across Les Arcs using a mix of on and off piste including some nice first tracks from the top of the Carreley chair.
Then a small group headed over to La Plagne again as I heard the Bellecote Glacier might be opening for skiing.
Arrived at the Roche de Mio to find the glacier still closed so headed down to Champagny via some really nice off piste. Fresh tracks from the top all the way to the traverse out. Excellent!
Then back up the Gondola and lunch before heading up the Roche de Mio again. This time down Cable Couloir. Interesting! Now that really is a brown trouser ridge!! More fresh powder all the way to the chair below.
Back up top onto the glacier, but found both chairs closed for the day. Not a problem. Time for a hike! After 30 minutes we were on the ridge heading to the off piste bowl. Loads of snow up there and a lot of work to be done before they can open the Combe piste.
Went round to the North Face and the Canadian Couloir looked great. Only three people down before us so fresh tracks top to bottom and all the way to the meadow by the bus stop! Excellent over 2000m of untracked snow!
Finally back to Les Arcs and another fast ski on piste back to Arc 1600 and home.
The 'off piste' high up is still great, light powder with plenty of places to put down fresh tracks if you go to the right place. Lower down the off piste has started to go off and is getting heavy and crusty in places.
The 'on piste' is now very mixed. Higher on the mountain the pistes are still good with a soft layer on top of a firm base, but lower down by the afternoons they are very hard packed in most places with many icy patches to catch you out. Take care and do not go to fast as you may find it hard to stop or avoid someone turning without warning. The red piste down to the mid station of the funi is not much fun with many stones coming through. The blue is better, but also worn.
Overall for those coming out this coming weekend the conditions are good, but I really hope the rain forecast for Saturday does not arrive! Fingers crossed.
Photos from today will be posted shortly over on the Les Arcs Winter page in the January 2016 Album. Remember to scroll down towards the end of the folder for the newest photos.

After a quick look in the Chapel back to Peisey. Then a fast ski across Les Arcs to the Snowpark above Arc 1600. Finally down to the Funi and home.
Sorry to be pedantic, but Notre Dame de Vernettes is an 'Oratoire', not a chapel. The difference being a (normally un-manned) place of pilgrimage, rather than a small 'sister' church in a village within a parish, the 'chef-lieu' having the actual 'eglise'. Did you know there is a spring inside the Oratoire de NdV what has healing properties? It is open to visit a few times a week (wed PM it think) and it it has some gloriously gauche baroque polychromatics (you can tell I'm a classicist...)

We have had a great week. Although on piste skiing has got icy in places. Skied over to Montalbert on what seemed entirely icey pistes. Couldn't wait to get back to les arcs.
Really enjoyed grand col, and going slightly off piste. Bois d lours also a good challenge.
How are Malgovert and Clair blanc red runs? Clair Blanc you can see and make your own mind. Malgovert must catch a few people out who think 'I can do Reds'
Last day to day, maybe a run down to villa roger and the black next to comborciere.
Sun is shining....woo!

Hi Les Arcs experts! We have stayed in 1950 several times and we know the resort fairly well, but tips are nevertheless always welcome. I have a couple of questions! We are 13 people in total: three families (six adults,kids/teenagers ranging from the ages of 18 down to 11).
- We arrive on Saturday 6 February; we would like to dine out that night and are a group of 13 (adults and teens). We will probably have drinks/snacks at the apartment first and limit ourselves to a main course in the restaurant to keep costs down. i was thinking of Chalet Luigi. Any views?
- we arrive on the opening day of the 6 nations and I know that several of us will want to watch the opening match (England Scotland?). I believe there are TVs in Les Belles Pintes. Or is there somewhere better? Even in 2000?
- We would like to have one 'special' evening out and were thinking of Les Chalets de l'Arc which is only open on Wednesday and Friday evenings. If you are familiar with the restaurant, do you think its good for a group (we might even be 15 people on that evening)? We are there to celebrate a 50th so I was hoping for something special (perhaps a birthday cake or similar). What about access to it? I think you can walk over from 2000? What about getting back down to 1950 after the inevitable overindulgence? if you have a better idea elsewhere in Les Arcs, so long as we can reach by navette, I am open to suggestions.
- Finally, other than skiing, can anyone recommend another special activity which I can offer to the birthday boy? Skidoo ride? Husky/sleigh? Visit to the Yurt? All these activities are advertised, but details on them are sketchy to say the least.
- And really finally, have I posted this in the correct forum/thread???
Thanking you kindly!
PS: the weather outlook is sunny! I hope we get a couple of good dumps in the next fortnight!

@araird, I don't know if it is just local legend, but I've been told that the spring was once thought to have miraculous powers for the childless. It seems the nuns who were up at the chapel kept getting pregnant & the water was thought to be the cause. Until it was noted that there was a distinct similarity between the babies and the local priest! Nevertheless, I'm told that infertile couples continue to go there to drink the water.

22 January 2016. More fresh tracks, powder and blue sky!
Another fun day in the mountains. After meeting with the others at the Vanoise Express we all headed up to the top of Roche de Mio. Then down the back in well tracked good snow.
Up the gondola and from top of Glacier chair, a short route round the back to the bottom of the same chair then time to head higher.
Needed to hike as the Traverse chair was closed. One trip down the Bellecote bowl in fresh powder with plenty of room for first tracks very nice.
Back up top and another hike. A quick picnic in the sun then down the Petit North Face of the Bellecote in more great snow with fresh tracks top to bottom.
Finally a fast ski back across Les Arcs and home. A really nice day out!
Photos for today already posted on the Les Arcs Winter page in the January 2016 Album. Enjoy!

The pistes everywhere today were better than yesterday in the morning, but lower down they were well worn on the way home later in the day. The higher pistes are holding up very well with the resort working hard to keep them in good condition. The snow canons are on during the day as well as the night right now and this is helping a great deal.
For those coming out this weekend you are in for some great skiing and boarding. If you want to join me for some riding send me a PM.
If you fancy trying 'all mountain' skis or snowboards or just need to rent some gear. Remember to visit Polairestar Ski Shop at the bottom of the Funicular.

@charlie26, you will need to get a taxi as I think the last bus has already finished. But check at tourist office for bus times to be sure.
@kearnsh, The Savoy in Arc 2000 is always a nice place to eat out for a special dinner. George's Bar in Arc 1950 has cheaper beer and is a good place to watch the rugby (he is Scottish!!). Parapante on skis always fun! Husky dog ride is OK. Skidoo more fun IMO. OR maybe a Helicopter ride or ski if good enough! Hope that helps.
@araird, yes if you want to be technical you are correct, but I do not think it really mattered to my friends and the kids. The boy just liked the body!!
@genepi, As for the water, old wives tale and funny, but never proved to be true!

Good day out, pistes generally in good to very good condition. There are icy patches around but the visibility was so good you could see them a mile away.
Great to meet Snowhead Steve today, hopefully we'll catch up again later in the week.

@kearnsh, just to say if you want to keep costs down, Luigi's is probably not your best starting place!
I've not been a fan of Nonna Lisas recently, but they did us OK this week. Mazots is another nice place not overly pricey. If you do stick with Luigi, then anyone on the chateaubriand does NOT need starters, sweets, cheese course or any pre-prandial peanuts. They are huge meals. Just sayin'.
For your 'special' meal, I'd suggest have a look at Table de Lys in the village. Most years our Wedding anniversary seems to match a skiing trip: we always go to the Lys, and they've not disappointed us yet.
Hope this helps,
AR

Quick question if I may? We are heading to arc 1950 at the end of March. There are 10 of us and we come in on two separate flights to Geneva. It seems that transfer buses are a max of 8 people so we'll have to spit the group. I'm looking at Cool Bus as they've been highly recommended on here many times, but wondering if there are any better options, or ones where we can all travel together?
It will be the first time in 1950 having stayed in 1800 before. We're in P&V accommodation - it seems the whole village is P&V! Will we get dropped at a central "check in" location? We don't have specific accommodation named on our booking.
Many thanks!

@charlie26, You will have to get a taxi up from Bourg. It will probably be cheeper and faster to get the taxi from Arc1600 rather than 1800. If you are at the Arpette it is just as easy to ski down to 1600 as it is to 1800.

Had a great first day to my week today, thanks due to piemonster for letting me tag along. It was cloudy on the Arc 1600 side this morning which meant the Arc 2000 bowl was getting busier. Late morning we headed back over the ridge and down towards vallendry, then the clouds disappeared and we enjoyed some great runs on the reds off grizzly etc with practically empty pistes. Pistes holding up well down to 1600 but very firm going.

23 January 2016. BLUE SKY, POWDER, but a little windy up top. Still a great day!
Started with the usual fast ski across Les Arcs to the Vanoise Express as Saturday is always a good day to go across to the Bellecote.
Manage to find a couple of short off piste sections to warm up the legs on the way to the Bellecote.
The Traversee Chair was open today so made two laps of the Bellecote bowl by different routes finding plenty of fresh powder.
Then a long trip home down to the Bauches chair in great snow with loads of room to make fresh tracks the whole way down.
Finally back through the forest above Les Coches to the Vanoise Express.
Once back on the Les Arcs side, another fast ski back to the Funicular and home.
The off piste is holding up well although becoming very skied in most places. Time to start hiking to those special places to find fresh tracks soon.
All the pistes and lifts across Les Arcs should be open on Sunday. The piste were better today with less people around so fewer icy patches, but still hard packed runs with a light dusting of chalky snow on top. Lower down the pistes are getting more worn in places, but overall the conditions are still good. The rain did not come today. They say we may get a little snow later in the week. We shall see.
Photos for today are already posted in the January 2016 Album on the Les Arcs Winter page (remember to scroll to the end for the new pics).

@charlie26, you need to book it and not cheap. When you arrive ask at reception of Arc 1950 for contact number.
@munter, yes, if using cool bus or other transfer company then they normally drop you by the reception building. But you should have details of where you are staying. Call travel agent to check in advance. Ben's bus are also a good option if more than 8 people.

Skiing this week, splitting half days with my other half and teaching the little one, so am up for meeting up with anyone any morning later this week. Based in 1600 and first time here. Warm when we arrived this afternoon
Also, posted this in the Piste, but looking for reccomendations for areas for teaching the little boy in 1600. Know about Mille 8 in 1800, hoping to find some slopes or a jardin des enfants in 1600 suitable without having to drive over or take the bus. I'll scope it tomorrow but would appreciate any info.

Just recovering from lunch, and it is recovery!
Pretty indicative of piste conditions, from the Bois de l'ours lift. This is a black natur piste.
Found it to be firmer than yesterday but not icier. Although harder to find a good edge.

Hmm that definitely looks firm, the warm weather this week will soften it up during the course of the day no doubt but mornings will be hard. Indications are some possible snow on Thursday and possibly colder and unsettled next week when I am there which I really hopes happens.
