@Markymark29, seems to be enough snow to open from I've seen (but no expert, obv). Back out March 20-27 so see what's what then.

And it doesn't explain why the Hoppelweg (blue 23) is still closed, ski school must be screaming out for that to be open

There's clearly something going on on Gampen... Women's DH cancelled because of safety issues, simple cat track runs not open. Is there some serious problem brought on by the building work perhaps?

The safety issues surrounding the women's race was due to lack of snow coverage, there has to be a sufficient amount of snow, not just on the course itself, but outside it if racers crash. With it being south facing and the temperature inversion at the time, there was no way they would have got enough snow down on the lower section of black 35 from Kapall.
It's just wierd there is nothing open on that one area below Gampen, between Fangbahn and Mattunbahn but below blue 20.

That's what they said, but plenty of races run on 100% artificial snow with just narrow ribbons of white on brown hillsides, so I wonder if there is more to it. Maybe I'm reading too much in to it, it was warm and it's south facing like you say. Maybe a problem with safety barriers?

@Sitter, home runs all have good snow, including nasserein. No obvious reason 21 is closed. Anyway, on train home now. Hope Val d'Isere is ready for me end Jan, and Gampen has resolved its issues by mid-March.

Fohn will continue until Tuesday/Wednesday.
Currently 2.5C in town.
Only be light snowfall this week totalling maybe 30cms ifvluck at 2200metres.
|
Which forecasts are you looking at???
ZAMG, Bergfex, Meteoblue, wintersporters.nl: all are saying up to 100 cm for Arlberg this week!!
Snow is falling in Lech as I'm writing this. Lech is at 1400 m, not 2200 m......

Re. Cancellation of womans downhill.
The FIS had to make a decision. Back Xmas when they started to build the course they were having problems securing the crash fencing where there was no snow. This is a very high speed course 100km/perhr
At that time there was no new snow in forecast until the new year therefore not giving enough time to build the course.
Gampen
As far as i understand the south facing ground is is still to warm & any snow they pump down on it just slides down. Red run 21 is always the last run they try to cover, strange because it used to be the old DH race track!!

+2°C and raining in St Anton this morning, turning to snow at the first gallerie over the pass, then snowing hard all the way over and down to below Stuben (-1°C there). Snow settling well even on the road.
There'll be significant amounts of new snow on the ground if this keeps up.

Many locals i know are/have written this season off . No major dump in sight. Easter is early. Basically it looks to be be a manmade snow season With little or no off piste .. |
So clarky999 are we going to call this season a whiteout rather than a washout then?

Official Weather.
Definite winter weather is forecast for the current week. Very cold air masses will settle in over our regions, but also repeated snowfall is forecast. A brief period of significantly improved conditions will probably approach on Thursday. Afterwards, some snow showers may interfere with the weather once again. As the air will further cool down, considerable amounts of new snow are not expected anymore. The long-term weather forecast has to be treated with caution, the development of the weather will remain very uncertain.
"Maybe" some lift closures higher up this week. Strong Wind is expected 60- 70kmph +.
Probably bring big snowdrifts which will give the impression of more snow than is.

@stanton,
Really Stanton, you are terribly pessimistic. The sentence "as the air will further cool down, considerable amounts of new snow are not expected anymore" applies to the times after Thursday.
I'll stick with the Lech-Zürs tourist office's statement this monday on their Facebook page:
"Powderalarm: Diese Woche erwartet uns eine riesige Menge an Neuschnee. Frau Holle ist wieder im Dienst "
I don't think this needs any translation.

I guess it comes with experience of dealing with tourist office weather forecasts:-)

I was not familiar with "Frau Holle". I looked it up, it comes from a Brother's Grimm fairy tale, apparently when Frau Holle made her bed it snowed.
Anyway, I'm sure giant amounts of snow is welcome whatever the cause:-)

@sah, ...........Or more likely they now consider that the snow is deep enough, for safety reasons and lack of coverage its been closed until now. Was required because of volume of people skiing at low level today due to the weather shutting high up lifts they opened it up........seems entirely sensible to me.

Been windy again in Lech today but not as bad as yesterday and more lifts open. Never stopped snowing all day. Knee deep powder off piste and at times ankle deep on piste. Best runs were 62a and red 35.

@Stanton: Please include the Vorarlberg Snow forecast here, it is much more usefull as large part of the skiing (also in St.Anton) is in the Vorarlberg area, and Vorarlberg gets much more snow than Tirol. As the Arlberg is a climate divide, the difference is essential, which shows when you compare snow at e.g. Ulmerhütte (Vorarlberg) with Rendl (Tirol).
Ulmerhutte, Valluga, Stuben and the Arlbergpass up to St.Christoph, Galzig, Schindlerspitze: it's Vorarlberg!
