Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What is the current situation regarding travel to Austria

Whether the Tourism Ministry or Health Ministry wins out, some interesting clauses in the legal documents from the RIS link (and to think I came to the forum as a break from work reports...)

- "Transport companies may not transport persons who are prohibited from entry in accordance with Section 6 (1) from states or areas in Appendix 1 into the federal territory." So arguably it's the airlines problem.
- "EU citizens" includes anyone in that EU citizens household, whether the other members of the houshold EU citizens or not.

For us, we've decided now to push back the hotel booking (potentially very expensive if we don't) but keep the flights for Jan (really cheap when we booked them) and decide to book accomodation somewhere just before we're due to fly, if we can.

@Tom H, if you read above this seems to be a mistake, though impossible to get confirmation at the moment. That list does not match the currently published official regulations (despite being published on the ministry website) nor does it match up with what has been publicly announced. There is no doubt about the "ban" on flights & entry from the African countries, the issue is the four European ones for which there is no flight ban. I suspect someone has simply added the European countries to the additional information without realising that what they have done conflicts with the information given at the top of the page. All very frustrating for those trying to navigate the obstacles simply to have a holiday.

It sounds like it could be confusion then - mixing up Christmas Eve closing and the new 10pm curfew. Not heard a sniff of this in SkiWelt today and I expect I would of having bumped into an owner.

We’ve just had confirmation from our travel agent that our trip can go ahead as planned on the 27th as long as we meet the entry requirements, so our fears about TUI flights were unfounded (or they decided not to cancel them after Crystal updated their guidance earlier today).

We’re all boostered and have PCRs booked for the 26th, so are beginning to believe that it will happen Smile

Thanks everyone for all the updates. This thread has been a real hub of information amidst all the drama.

I guess to be fair it is their holiday period too and without clear written regulations they are doing their best. Let’s hope the border police have the same understanding as the tour operators.

Thanks

After the Crystal cancellation email yesterday (and a second one today explaining they cancelled because they feared the majority of travellers couldn't get the required PCR's in time) I also received the following email from TUI today :

Quote:
Hello,

Unfortunately, due to the recent update on travel restrictions from Austrian authorities, we've had to cancel our flights to Austria on the 27th December. We're sorry for the disappointment this will cause.

Customers with a flight only booking will receive a communication shortly. All Crystal Ski Package holiday customers have been emailed directly with more information. Customers due to holiday in Italy via Innsbruck on 27th December; we'll be in contact wit you tomorrow (23rd December) with your alternative flying arrangements.

Thanks

Your TUI Team.

You may therefore wish to double check your TUI flight (assuming you were flying to Austria, not Germany). Fingers crossed for you.

I spent the day trying to find other TO package (or flight and car hire package + hotel) to Austria, Switzerland or Finland, for Monday, to little avail.. Ran out of time and went to pick the 11 year old up from basketball to find he'd fallen and hurt his wrist in the last game, which got progressively worse on the drive home. Trip out to the walk in centre for x ray, he is now splinted, x ray results tomorrow to find out if he is in the splint for 1 week or 4. Just as well I hadn't rebooked anything. I think that just about nails the coffin for our hope of a trip next week. Sad

Bon chance to anyone still in the running to go ! snowHead

Regs have been published, with the new sections helpfully highlighted in yellow:

https://goverdrive.portal.at/index.php/s/qnepQJZoEEZgX22/download/Entry-requirements-EN.pdf

They’ve got around the VVA by introducing a new quarantine exemption for boostered + PCRs, for all 12 countries it looks like

48hr PCR confirmed (for adults, not sure about teenagers)

No mention of essential travel anywhere in this doc (don’t think there was in previous versions either)

Do UK arrivals now have to fill out the Registration form mentioned at requirement 2?

There is a highlighted change to Minor entry requirements at 12.b - it’s either a change to entry testing timescale or a relaxation to allow antigen tests?

Hopefully not a thread-hijack, but does anybody know if there is an accepted alternative to PCR for travel? As I understand it, you can remain PCR positive for weeks, sometimes months, after covid recovery. If there is not, I guess that you then cannot travel for weeks/months?

@ulmerhutte, you need to explore the recovery form at the bottom here:

https://goverdrive.portal.at/index.php/s/fgaRkdfKzPrK3fe/download/Declaration-Entry-Transit-EN.pdf

It may only work if you haven’t spent time in the UK or one of the other virus variant areas and/or you are an EEA national or have Austrian residency.

It’s probably a slim chance of testing positive once a few weeks have passed.

Hoteliers are screaming about the new rules. Basically they are facing massive cancellations from UK, Norway, Denmark and Netherlands, while being left to sit on fresh food ordered for those visitors! The Austrian health minister probably won't survive this. Get ready for more chaos ahead!

Well after saying that we were 'done' following Crystal cancelling, we've now rebooked for Passo Tonale, going out in 3 days. Pistes look a bit more basic than we'd ordinarily go for, but needs must and it was cheap as chips.

Hopefully no more disappointments... can't immediately see Italy making any further changes (to the ones announced yesterday).

Fingers crossed snowHead

Tonale is ok, went there a few years ago when it was a poor snow year as its very high and snow sure. Was minus 20 all the time I was there. It was once described to me as a straight up and down resort and I see what they mean having been there. Lots a parallel lifts up to the same altitude, a wider area than long runs. There is a long run, must be near to 2 miles down to Ponte di Lengo and there you will find more Austrian type runs down through the trees, quite nice down there. Then you have the Glacier on the opposite side with runs back down to the town. There is enough for a week, enjoy. Longish transfer from Turin I think but lovely scenery around the lake. Looked more like late spring in January before you get up to the alps so don't worry about lack of snow on the ground when you arrive in Italy.

The Austrian Tourist board site, is also showing 48 hrs, no mention of needing to complete the registration form.

NEW: Virus variant areas United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway
New rules for everyone arriving from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway. These countries will be classified as a virus variant region from 25 December in Austria. This means:

People who are fully vaccinated (double jabbed) AND have received the 3rd booster jab can enter Austria with a negative PCR test (valid 48 hours). Children under the age of 12 are exempt (see below) and teenagers eligible for the Holiday Ninja Pass will be able to enter with a negative PCR test (valid 48 hours).
Important additional information: Everyone else travelling from the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway needs to quarantine for 10 days upon arrival if they have not been fully vaccinated (2 x jabs) and had a third booster.

As I read regs your booster must have been given at least 120 days after jab 2. That's catching out four of our party of six! Have to tery and get thru to RBS Travel today so they can then sit on on hold to crystal for hours. Today is technically last day I get free changes for travel on 8 Jan.

@Ghost Dog, nobody checks the gaps between the jabs, they just want to see the latest certificate/code that says 3/3 on it. 120 days is just the minimum gap before you qualify for a booster in Austria.

Anyone know if I'm right, I'd rather not be.

Vaccination certificates must meet the following requirements:
i. second vaccination, whereby this must not be more than 270 days
ago and at least 14 days must have elapsed between this and the
first vaccination, or
ii. 21 days have passed since vaccination in the case of vaccines for
which only one vaccination is planned, whereby this must not be
more than 270 days ago, or
iii. vaccination, provided that at least 21 days before the vaccination, a
disease of COVID-19 was confirmed by means of a positive PCR-
/LAMP-/TMA-test for SARS-CoV-2 or proof of neutralizing
antibodies, whereby the vaccination must not be more than 270
days ago, or
iv. further vaccination, whereby this must not be more than 270 days
ago and between this and a vaccination in terms of points i. and iii.
at least 120 days or a vaccination in terms of point ii. at least 14
days must have passed.

A question on the required pcr; I’ll be triple vaccinated and currently recovered from covid. My booster is on 10/1. My trip on the 18/1.
It seems daft to have to pcr before flying when I’m not only recovered from the virus but also triple vaccinated?
If I do have to pcr test I’m flying at 2pm on the 18th, when should I do my test?

Thanks

@Jones82, The duration of the test validity is 48 hours before arrival, so no earlier than 17:00 on 16.1 (you'll land at 17:00, but I'd push it a bit into the evening in case of flight delay). If you could guarantee a result in time from the 17.1, even better.

@Jones82, you do need the pcr test, even if you are immunised from tip to toe. Reasoning being that even the immune can carry and transmit the virus
