Having just returned from a month in this area I reckon it is a fun place to visit if you do not mind the train rides and very slow gondalas. One thing for sure, it is not just for lower level skiers, the off piste was excellent and oh so much snow. Coming soon I will post more details of my time there. It was a pity none of the other snowheads wanted to meet up, next time maybe. But I did find some great locals to show me some of the secret spots and ride all that fresh powder. Enjoy the rest of the season.

According to the Jungfrau Winter site the Wixi and Fallboden lifts were shut today. Is that it for the season for them?

No, just a bit windy up at the top.

This is an overdue trip report, we were in Wengen 14th – 21st March.
We stayed in the Chalet Brunner, a fairly new apartment building just beside the Hotel Brunner, they’re nicely done out and have great views up towards the Silberhorn which glowed very nicely at sunrise/sunset. We were a group of 4 plus baby and the only downside of this location was that for the early part of the week the walk up and down to the village was pretty hazardous, especially in the mornings, due to the compacted snow and sheet ice on the road. I was a bit surprised none of it had been cleared. It was a good location though and allowed for easy skiing down to the Cable Car.
I didn’t ski the whole week as did family/touristy bits including the eye wateringly expensive Jungfraujoch which I must admit is spectacular and worth it, just best not to convert the swiss franc cost back to pounds The non skiing family found the trains enjoyable and great for getting up to all the mountain restaurants and walks. I know some other posters see them as a pain/slow but given the frequency and punctuality of them I didn’t think of them as a problem and made a pleasant alternative uplift to the usual lifts.
Skiing wise had a great time, conditions were fantastic though sure I saw a temperature of +12 up the mountain one day. Snow was excellent though and was able to ski back down easily with little in the way of bare patches. Skiied with the Ski Club one day trying their free sampler and whilst I think I was probably the youngest in the group by at least 20 years I enjoyed it and was a good way to get to know all the runs, particularly as there was a little slalom course left open just off the Lager lift, great fun and I was well chuffed seeing as I’m far from a great skier but managed to get round everything without stacking it! Some of my favourite runs were off the Lager lift and that area, some nice stuff on the way down to Grindelwald. Otherwise favourites were the run off Wixi. I chose the coldest day of the week, Friday, before trying the Fallboden chair, seemed about the slowest of the week and was bliddy freezing!
We gave “best Rosti” award to the Wengneralp restaurant which was brilliant and also had the obligatory apple fritters at Brandegg which lived up to the hype! In fact just for scientific purposes we tried the fritters elsewhere, including Almend, but the Brandegg ones definitely rated top
In all we really loved it and despite the drawbacks have mentioned can definitely see us going back sometime, especially when we have family/non skiers in tow.

Chris Brookes, I did but not on skis unfortunately. We went up to the Schilthorn one day, but I had the little lad in the carrier so didn't ski. The views were fantastic and Murren looked lovely, the missus was quite tempted to go there on a return trip as its more choclate box pretty than Wengen!
To be honest I was glad I wasn't skiing down from the Shilthorn, it looked intimidately steep at the top of the run down! It was quite funny watching people take it on from the viewpoints, most were clearly confident but some started and had obviously just got past the point of no return when they started having second thoughts, didn't look like a slope to try side slipping down ... thankfully didn't see anyone come a cropper though.
Sure we'll be back and ski the Murren side in future.

You know it makes sense.

Chris Brookes, Actually it went down as far as 1000 meters, judging the Stechelberg webcam, where there was snow visible on ridges.
Another question... Since i'm planning to go mountainbiking up there... When can I find the roads up to Mannlichen fairly snowfree? I really do trust a pair of skis more on snow then a bike

Ronald, I've been there in June and there's been no snow except in a few dark gullies on the Mannlichen however I've also walked up to Kl Scheidegg from Wengen in the last week in July and ended up walking through 20cm of snow in a snowstorm. I reckon your best chance is early or late summer, avoid July and August when it can get really hot up there, Early June or even Late May should give you lots of wild flowers in the fields but after the snow this year May might be a little early

Heat is fine with me, just have to drag a lot of water up the mountain...
Now the question is: Rent from Imboden down in Lauterbrunnen (about 100 quid for 6 days) or 'upgrade' my POCcitybike a lot (Doable for 600-700 quid, exchanging the citybike)

Folks I may check in from time to time but I don't think I'll be around much until the season starts again. I'm planning to have two trips next year, one of these in Wengen so I reckon that I'll do my usual wasting of tooooooo much time checking on Snowheads beforehand and fretting about snow.
Til then, have a great break. Stay safe.
Skibb.
p.s. If anyone does have a spare chalet in Wengen that they want to give away, just to feel good about themselves, pm me

Received the Jungfrauwintercard email newletter today and they stated the following -
Three new chairlifts will add to next winter’s snow fun.
The Kleine Scheidegg/Eigergletscher/Salzegg powder snow area is being upgraded with an ultra-modern 6-seater chairlift (with hood) from Arvengarten to Eigergletscher.
The Winteregg/Allmendhubel area in Mürren is actually getting two new chairlifts. The Winteregg chairlift is undergoing conversion to a most modern 4-seater chairlift with hood. And at the bottom station of the Maulerhubel chairlift, the new 2-seater Allmiboden chairlift now under construction will carry guests straight up to Allmendhubel.

Not so sure that is good news - I reckon accessible off-piste in the area may get skied out fairly quickly as a result. I can do ungrateful.

achilles, not sure about the Murren side but I think that it will improve things arround Kleine Scheidegg, since they put in the chair to replace the Honegg it has I believe reduced queue sizes considerably, adding a third chair from the same point but up a different slope will further reduce queues and whilst it will mean more people using the bowl below Eigergletscher I suspect that it will balancwe out with less using Honegg, also people will no longer need to walk from Eigergletscher or climb up from the blue to the dreadful Salzegg T bar, as far as I'm concerned it should have been done years ago, in fact it has been suggested for a considerable number of years I think since the late 70's due to several very bad accidents having occured on the T bar

As close as it looks. It still takes 1.40hr (fastest connection) from Bern MainStation to Wengen !!
In season many Bernese townies ski the local hills "Thun" as the Jungfrau region is to expensive.

Small places some have only a couple hundread metre of vertical but places like Eywald over 500M. Its enough for a cheap day out from Bern with a lcoals pass. Just go in your ski boots on the train from Bern.

stanton, mind you I've seen swiss getting on a train at 5.30am in Basle in their ski boots and going all the way through to the Jungfrau area before, though usually they take the train down to Grindelwald as it gets them onto the slopes faster

Boy missing at Trümmelbach Falls
Cantonal police seek witnesses and photographic and video material
The cantonal police are looking for anyone who can shed light on the disappearance of a 12-year-old boy on Friday afternoon at the Trümmelbach Falls near Lauterbrunnen. A widespread search has so far yielded no sign of the boy, an American citizen who was visiting the landmark with his family.
The boy, his mother and further family members, all American citizens, took the lift up to the falls and reached the upper platform on foot. They realised during the descent at around 16.30 on Friday that the 12-year-old boy was missing. They last saw him on the upper platform. Other visitors to the falls reported seeing a person drifting in wildwater shortly before 17.00.

Oh dear that's really not good, but what were the parents doing not keeping an eye on their child, not that there would be anything they could do if the child went into the water, the speed and power of those waterfalls is incredible
|
|
|
|
|
|
Terrible news, but if he'd gone into the water, wouldn't he have ended up coming out by the entrance and the ticket hut? Surely he would have been seen! Was only there a couple of weeks ago and the speed and power of those falls were frightening. Hope there is a happy ending to this.
