Yep, you are totally correct. I sure as heck will never live in St Anton (unless I rob a bank), but for a holiday I like both options. Sometimes I like to go somewhere cheaper, save money and not worry about lots of bars or restaurants, sometimes I want somewhere where we can walk around shops, try different bars etc. I absolutely loved the weekend I had in Stuben, but for this trip I think I'd prefer to stay in town... and therefore I have to pay more. I only get to ski a few days a year, the cost of staying in St Anton is not the limiting thing so much as the time I have available, so I want to make the most of the time when I'm there.

Try Pettneu,Schaan, Flirsch. There are places for €50 per night halfboard saunas free ski depot in St Anton.
Direct nonstop buses to the slopes (Quicker than St Jakob). Also night busses.Really dont know why folk dont use this option.
St Anton is overpriced your save an absolute fortune. |
So if looking for cheaper place o/s St Anton which of those would be the best/nicest. Any specific recommendations (needs to have nice sauna) please?

There does seem to be an annoying gap in between the day service and the night service, as you say getting back home after ~6pm ish or in to town for dinner looks like it requires a taxi. Taxi's are not cheap, but if there's a small group of you it is not very expensive (I think, I don't often use them to be honest). Looks like it's your only option

Im not a Tourist Office but one example here if it helps.
This Hotel Garni is a very good 3*. They also have an annexe just across the street which is brand new inside.
Your unlikely to have many English guests here (The owner speaks v good English). Mostly, Germans Dutch & even Austrians
Breakfast is good (sufficient) The Dinner is 3 course you get a choice from 2 main courses. Theres is a Sauna. There is A small Nah & Frisch supermarket on the ground floor of the same building.
The Free Skibus (Bus 11) stops right outside and runs from 07.50 every 15 mins upto 11.00 and then 30-60mins upto 14.40. Free Return Skibus start at 11.25 lastbus 17.55. If you miss the last free bus you can use the Postbus which will cost about €3 and the last Postbus departs at 19.35.
There are only two 2 nightbusses into St Anton approxx 21.30 & 23.15 (every Wednesday Skishow night this is free) . Busses back from St Anton 00.15 02.10 last bus 03.30 (these will cost you €5 each way). This is great value considering it will cost you €3 just to go to St Jakob !! A cab could cost you €35 + each way.

Is it possible to get back to Pettneu / Flirsch after skiing and back to St Anton again without paying for a Taxi? (which is probably very expensive). |
Yes. See my answer above.
Seeing as Pettneu am Arlberg ski area is now closed (bankrupt) everyone from Pettneu comes & returns on the Bus (10).
FOLKS IT IS NOT NECCESARY TO USE THE TAXIS. No matter how cheap you may think it is going as a group in a taxi. The Taxis are not metrered. All are fixed price & for the short distances they travel are an unbelievable Rip OFF.
The Busses are modern, reliable, comfortable clean & cheap.

OK, I had not spotted the Post Bus timetable. If the times suit you then this is the best idea. However, I don't understand your hatred of the taxis. Have you had a fight with a taxi driver? (actually, I have had a couple of arguments with them myself so this is not impossible;-) ) I know they are unmetered, the drivers I've met have generally been pretty grumpy too, but if you agree the price before you get in there's no problem - you either go with them or you wait for the bus. You say they have a fixed price but then you say it might be more than €35 - there is no "might", if it's a fixed price you get the price before you get in. If there was 6 of you and it's €35 then that's less than €1 more than the night bus per person, I'd be happy with that if I wanted to go home at 1am for instance. During the day time it will be less than this anyway. If it's just one or 2 of you it is a rip off, if there's more of you then it's worth checking the price.

There are buses to Stuben or trains to St Anton from Langen, but if time is pressing and there's no bus or train due and you are in a group, i'd get a cab.
The off piste around Stuben will get bumpy if there's no fresh, but the main bump runs are to be found off the Valluga or Kandahar on Galzig.

kitenski,
If your doing that run and others like Malfontal or Maroi. You should make sure
The egress taxi is all included in your days guiding price.
I wouldnt pay anymore than they quoted.
If the guide is expecting you to pay for the taxi he orderded (from his cousin) dont pay.

OK Folks. Its been while since some decent POW. Starting Friday through the Weekend & Monday. We should be getting a good (conservative) 0.5M+ downtown. A good 1M+ of new POW !!
Weekends is Changeover so this with heave snowfall this usually means chaos on the roads, possibly the railway with potential for High Avalanche danger.

DB, Pettnue is fine, we stayed there one year and got the occassional taxi back. Can't quite recall the cost but there were 3 of us and don't think it was too expensive, in fact it couldn't have been because one of my buddies is a total skin flint! Our hotel provided transport each way regularly through the day, it was a far more expensive choice than normal because no rooms were available in St A and one of the boys was desperate to ski there, but have to say that it was worth every penny and thoroughly recommend it to you. Food and win were perfect! Even my tight wad mate agreed it was good value.

stanton & northantsred,
Thanks for the Bus info etc.
I generally train over from here in Vienna and meet up with English friends, some of whom who are mostly there for the skiing others are more Apres Ski biased. Normally just go for a basic B&B / Pension and hire a guide for a few days. I like being a able to join and depart from the Apres Ski when I can and get into the shops after skiing to fondle the latest kit. Missing the bus could be very dangerous as drinking more beer & Schnapps etc until the next Bus is there could knacker the next days skiing with the guide. Can see how it would work for some though esp. if they are in a hotel that provides transport. I doubt the saving would be worth the extra hassle for having to organise my holiday around bus timetables.

clarky999, Free bus from Pettneu........... Torben stays out there I believe and he's always in and around town easy enough, first lifts up etc.
Headtorch and a gentle slide down the Rosanna bank path to those places after apres! Better on a MTB in summer though, great training loops through the forests around there.

Way to much stress going on in here about Busses. Chill out your all on vacation.
St Anton am Arlberg with its satelite villages takes care of all your public transportation needs.
It really is no hassle at all. Thousands of folk everyday use the busses to get around.
Every accomodations can give you a pocket timetable.
Pettneu walk?? I cant think why anyone would want to do that at night. Thats why they have night busses.
The walk is 40 mins from Haus Falchoff (bushalt) in Unter Gand.
Walk from St Anton to Untergand at least 40mins. So your looking at min 1hr 20 total.

It is a very long walk... when you've missed the bus and can't afford the cab. I think it was daylight by the time I got back to St Anton once after a ski bum party in Pettneu (do they still have those?). Ah, happy days.
|
|
|
|

stanton, because the night busses don't cover all your needs. There's a big gap in the day and night service if you want to do apres, and the night busses go about once an hour, and not until very late.
Took me an hour to walk from the Fernblick gaesthof (I think, this was 08/09, and I was only there for about two weeks before moving into the Skilehrer Haus in Anton) in Pettneu to Bar Cuba in Anton - wanted to ditch my skis and instructor uniform before apres, dinner and going out - but the bus service in after skiing time sucks. Was normally able to hitch, but not always.
Obviously not ideal, though the walk's not too bad from St Jakob, especially on the way home (if you miss the bus/want to stay out later) when you have your beer blanket on.

St Anton buses? Or why I may very well never go back to St Anton. I've posted this before, but:
In St Anton, just after New Year [2012], we got on the bus at 4pm-ish at the Nasserein to go to the main part of town. Unfortunately we caught the clockwise bus, not the anticlockwise bus. It was snowing, and had been snowing solidly for nearly two weeks. The main road was closed following an avalanche. It took the driver nearly an hour to reach St Jacob along the back road. He then turned round to go the other way. Twenty minutes later, we met another bus going in the opposite direction so had to back all the way back to the main road at St Jacob. At this point, he terminated the bus and told us there would be no more buses and left us to walk back. It's "only" 2-3 miles' walk, somewhat irritating in ski boots, with skis, in the dark in a blizzard at the end of a tiring day. No taxis, nobody at all - no cars, no people etc. etc. And then we met a snowplough who told us the road was closed to pedestrians owing to the avalanche risk, but if we go "quickly" we'll be OK...
Oh yes, and as we were walking back, the bus came past us, driving us off the road, and drove back to town. Thanks!!

stanton,
If you only go into St Anton and back once in a day it's fine. The problem is going back to the hotel out of town to get changed and then getting back into St Anton again. It saves a bit of money but adds stress. It was enough stress on my last day in St Anton to do a day with a guide until just after 16:00 but be at the train station for 17:00. The day can't always be planned and staying in the centre allows you to be flexible without having to worry about bus time-tables or vastly over-priced taxis.
