allanm, Hopeful it snows low tonight as have earmarked Mont Blanc run over in 1600 for a good 'practice/learn to snowboard' run. Bowl gets a bit busy for our standard of boarding. To many people to take out!

What a horrible day. Went out, had a look and came back home again. Wet and windy with only very little snow falling on the higher runs although I have now seen from comments by thefatcontroller, that it is snowing above Arc 2000. I hope so. Still raining below that level so will post again tomorrow when I have been out to see how conditions have changed.

Been sledging for the last hour and still snowing in 2000. Bit lighter but snowing. We seem to have been lucky today for a change and followed snow and sun. Saw no rain. Let's hope snow level drops overnight.

One bad experience today. We went for the first time today for a coffee at the restaurant high above Peisey/Vallandry, La Podreuse? We had 2 coffees, all very nice, served at the table by a waiter. It came to 8.80 euro. I took a note out to pay for the drinks. I was 100% certain I put a 20 down but before it had hit the tray he took it and put the change of a 10 down. he moved away from our table so quick I didn't have time to challenge him and I knew if I called him back it would have been a fight, not one I was interested in having but very, very annoying. He knew exactly what he was doing. So anyone out there watch out for the thieving scally in that restaurant or better still avoid the place.

No sign of any more fresh stuff up in 2000. Of out boarding today, may not last depending on conditions.

Went out on boards and all was good till we realised that Arpette lift was shut and we had to do that long flat bit over to 1600. Not good for beginners on boards. Also 1600 icy as hell. As Arepette lift shut (mechanical issues) we will get bus back up to 2000 and some soft snow.

So disappointed that the snow forecast, as is so often the case, seems to evaporate as my depature approaches! A good 30cms forecast for the end of this week start of next is now reduced to nothing..ah well thats the trouble with the weather its all over the place! Will stick to the hire skis and get learning how to carve on two sticks instead of bumping around in powder on one...boooo.

I'm going out tomorrow and my wife and I both have brand new skis. Should I be afraid? Seems daft to buy skis, pay for carriage then pay extra to hire skis when you're there. Do you reckon that's what I'm going to have to end up doing?

boris360, We used our brand new skis this week. Wasn't going to pay for hire but would have been nice to hear a few less crunches. Use your own but you will spot the odd bad bit and just take care. Book a full service from spyderjon for when you get back!

Ok Cheers. Did your skis take much damage? I could kick myself because I've just sold our old skis on ebay and they'd have been perfect for this situation, oh well!

boris360, I wouldn't worry. No matter the conditions you will always get caught out at some point. I remember references to "my rock ski's" years ago. But I, and I suspect most people, who go out for a couple of weeks a season, am not going to maintain and transport two sets of ski's. It's different if you leave near the slopes.

JimW, Blackberry and 3G issues in 1600!
In for lunch. Board put away. .Don't know correct words but when I turn on my board so I have my back to the slope I am very weak and fall a lot. Falling on ice hurts. Coxyx destroyed. Skiing this afternoon. .

My parents go there a lot as the open bowl above Vallandry is just enough for them to ski in and have regular breaks - they are both mid 70s, one with 2 new knees and the other recovering from cancer, so I'm just pleased they are still going! Anyway, they have never had an issues there and like the place.
It does sound like this was a deliberate scam but just to balance the comment about avoid the place

You're right actually, the most damage I ever did to my bases was in great snow conditions. I wasn't suggesting transporting two sets of skis, I would probably have just chosen to take the older pair because my new ones are slightly fatter too, so my old, slimmer skis would have just been better for dodgy hardpack.

Boris, I really dislike the Poudreuse, but unfortunately it's the only easy to get to piste side restaurant if your lapping around Vallandry. New owners this year seem to have slightly reduced the food prices, but the drinks (especially the vile hot chocolate served in soup bowls for silly money) still seem more expensive than similar places in the resort. I'm hoping that with more time the new owners (who took over the Arpette last season) will improve the place and cheer up the staff there.

rob@rar, Ah that may well explain things then - my parents haven't been yet this year!
My fave place to stop if staying near Vallandry is to take Derby and swing around and under it to (what we call) the Secret Hut level with Transarc mid-station. Being outside seating is generally quiet but is a good place for us to stop with the kids and let them play while we have a seat.

Boris, there's a new snack hut at the top of the Peisey chairlift, same kind of arrangement as the one near the TransArc midstation and the two in the 2000 bowl.

Sitting outside in 2000 having beer. Finished for the day. Horrible flat light. Skiing Plagnettes was like taking a roller coaster blind fold. Beer and crepes a safer option.

Apart from the thieving little poo-poo stealing my money, 8.80 euro for 2 coffees is very expensive for resort? On that basis alone, ignoring the thieving poo-poo, better aim for somewhere else. 1950 is cheaper than that! As an aside severe lack of Russian hookers in 1950 this week, has the credit crunch really hit Russia?

Heelside edge...it you are 'weak' on that edge probably not flexing your knees enough (bend zee knees!) and/or not flexing your toes up to get the heelside edge in so inclining your body to increase edge angle rather than angling the edge up by flexing...your centre of gravity is then beyond the edge of the board and if you hit anything slippy so the board has a chance to get infront of you...bang! Its easier to flex your knees towards the slope on toe edge and remain over the edge so most people find it easier to slide about on toe edge and carving is way easier on toe edge.
Im still hollow inside cos there is no snow, some friends are just off to Arl and its belting it down all week...might stow away!

thefatcontroller, I know some guys who work both at the Arpette & Poudreuse, there's not actually that many waiters, and the jobs are shared between the two places. PM if you can remember what he looked like and I'll have a word....
Today....
Found some OK bits and some snow you would not make your worst enemy ski in - stuff you need to be a good skier to turn in... well out of my reach.
Some OK to be had off the top of the Varet, and earlier on the ridge off the top of the Transarc going down to Arcabulle but staying way way left - just beware, you can commit very easily to a trail whch looks good but ends up being extremely hard work.
Runs above Vallandry were boiler plate early this morning, what fillings I had, now need replaced. You really need to keep an eye on height, time and especially aspect, as at lower levels, in the shade is... not nice. Locals here, reckon a sprinkling above 2K tonight with more rain lower down.
