Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just been speaking to Beanie. Unbelievable amounts of snow in the village apparently, and the Inferno was virtually an off-piste event. One of our guys took 45 minutes to complete the course after losing a ski!

Its just brilliant here right now. Granted I have had to take some runs quite slow since visibility is nuts but whoever did the snow dance....thank you (and id like pictures). Admittedly, knee to chest deep powder is not ideal with no poles and a casted hand Madeye-Smiley but manageable. I am very happy for finding this site and getting such good info on where to eat-drink-everything. Cheers all.

D G Orf, I am sure in the 2866 posts you have made (mostly about Murren) the info I am looking for is available but to be honest I'll be old before I find it. I am looking at a sneaky week starting March 13th (Sunday). I think there will just be 2 of us, (a boys trip). Do places take Sunday-Sunday bookings and if so are any of the hotels on page 1 of this thread best for Sundays? I'm not concerned about Hotels V Self catering or chalets. More the Sun-Sun bit. Next what's the best way from Basel airport to Murren? Again I'm sure it's there. Maybe you should precie the whole thing into one definitive guide. Smile

nextascent, Glad to hear you are enjoying the Wengen experience snowHead . Which hotel did you book into - I believe on a previous posting you said the Alpenrose was full?
Have you met any DHO people or been to the DHO social hour in the Curling Club hut? (I believe the DHO will be celebrating its 80th anniversary this year). When I was there recently the Secretary showed me an interesting DHO yearbook from the 1930s with fascinating photographs of the era.
I guess Wengen makes an interesting change from Colorado (I have visited many of the resorts there, since I have a Cousin who lives in Gunnison, near Crested Butte).
Off-Topic: - Which is your nearest/favourite resort in Colorado - I really enjoyed Crested Butte, Telluride and Aspen (Ajax Mountain)

Michael B, If you private book many of the hotels will let you do Sunday to Sunday especially that late in the season for only 2 people, best option would probably be to send an email to Murren tourist office, but be aware that currently the Murren to Schilthorn cable car which is about 50% of the local area arround Murren is currently not working, though they are currently doing all they can, it is not anticipated that it will be running before Mid March and it might be later if the weather is bad. You may therefore prefer to try Wengen on the other side of the valley, again the local tourist office can help you find accomodation.

The second part of your request is easier, Bus from Basle Airport to Basle Station, Train from there via Bern (possibly needing a change there depending on train times) to Interlaken Ost, change trains there and get one to Lauterbrunnen, change again and either cross the road for funicular and train to Murren or catch the train up to Wengen, the reason for all the train changes is the different gauges of the railways. Get a Swiss Transfer Ticket (£57 2nd class £88 1st class return) from the Swiss Tourist office in the UK

Another 10cm of snow from yesterday, so Wengen now has arround 60cm in the village with slightly more on the nursery slopes and arround 90cm at the upper areas of Mannlichen and Kline Schidegg, the weather is very cold with tempratures down to about -10C in the village this morning and -30C up at the Schilthorn, bear in mind that temps of -25C are capable of causing permanent damage to the lungs and please wrap up warm if you are out there at the moment.

Forecast is still for snow for the next 5 days, however this may be broken by occasional sunny spells, temperatures will start to rise slightly as we approach the week end but are expected to remain below Freezing at all times, Thursday and Friday look as if they will be the best days this week with early next week also looking promising

Hi brian we are staying at the falken hotel [fawlty towers i know] it's our first visit to Wengen and we are really excite, even though we normally wouldn't have gone there if i took any notice of where to ski and snowboard 2004 as it has Wengen down for poor snow reliability. Where are you staying and have you been before? Linda is hoping for nice undemanding cruising runs as she isn't a fan of steeps, so i have got her excited about the place. I get a bit nervous when all this fresh snow falls but i'm sure it will be great for us all Brian.

andyarmitage, lots to either side of the piste, but you have plenty of room on the piste itself, it's a great run for bad weather days as well, some nice views as you go down and a great restaurant at Brandegg, try to do it late morning as there is a bit more sun on it, hardley anyone uses it because a.) its quite long at about 6km and b.) it's only a blue run.

If the snow is good you can ski all the way down to Grindelwald

hi Andy

Dg is right- the blue down to Brandegg is great fun- the cruising through the trees is relaxing and sooo quiet.- The apple fritters at the restauraunt in Brandegg are renowned as well. This will be our 6th stay at wengen (we went at Christmas this year also.) and we are at the alpenrose again. All i can say about "Where to Ski and Snhowboard 2004" is Smelly Pants. We have always had good snowcover there. Perhaps we have just been lucky.
There are 8 of us going this time. As i said we arrive on the 24th and are staying for 8days, so perhaps we could meet up for a drink or six!!!!
Or we could meet for Apple fritters at Brandegg one lunch time. snowHead

Alastair Pink, No havent met any DHO ppl or been to the curling hut. As to CO resorts I really like Breckenridge and Winter Park...have a lot of local specials which helps. You should let me know next time youre out to CO...perhaps we can take some turns together.

Onto Wengen....brrrrrr. I was freezing today. Many breaks to warm up and many many layers. I was hoping for one day of sun to get pictures but I think Ill just take it out in the snow =)

The webcams are showing nice clear pictures of the area today. Next week (according to Metcheck) having got through this current exceptionally cold snap, there seems to be more snow dumping (17cm on Monday, 29cm on Tuesday and 30cm on Wednesday)….the temperature is rising though….

AdrianV, not by a lot though, don't forget for two weeks prior to the current snow dump it was up to +10 each day and it was still skiable with only 20-40 cm under ski, from December, now they have about 4 times that amount Laughing Cool

Oh, to be in Wengen
Now the snow is there,
And whoever wakes in Wengen
Sees, this morning, quite aware,
That the lowest slopes and the the highest hill,
Round the Eiger are in snowy thrall,
While the skiers carve on the steep piste slope,
In Wengen—now!

Hi guys, longtime no posting.

Wow,the conditions are lovely but i've decided not to return to Murren this year due to the cablecar being out of action. If anyone is visiting Murren for the day please let me know how the runs are (Schiltgrat/Winteregg)im sure even with the new huge dumps of snow the bare patches will soon surface.
