IMO your better off going through late in the day, than going through early, last year we drove through the night with the idea of arriving early, but hit the most horrendous traffic jams around Chambery. |
I know, I heard about you on the traffic radio last year. How about hang a left to Geneva and come through Annecy?

Hi, anyone with local knowledge recommend any ski schools, particular instructors, from 1850 please? Group lessons for an early intermediate skier, adult, mornings. |
I can strongly recommend Sam Burrows at this lot. Excellent.

PS Sam also sings with Pat (?) in Taiga bar, so if you don't like his lessons you can heckle him in the evenings!

@Rowlski, Supreme ski look good, they were touting their skills sessions to our chalet hosts and sounded quite reasonable value.

Today was a peach. Perfect on and off piste. Tons of fresh snow everywhere. Links open. Quite a lot of blue sky too. Mostly took advantage of the powder all over the shallower angled off piste faces above St Martin. Super day.

@Little Martin, we've had lessons in a few different resorts and countries and I must say, particularly for the kids, they are the best lessons they've ever had. My son asked quite a few times now when we're going back there for him to have lessons with "Nick" who I must say was superb. He couldn't stop talking about them ... though not sure we can afford Courch this year and the kids lessons were about £400 so whilst possibly reasonable value hardly cheap!
I would still highly recommend them though.

Does Tim post on here? I love his snow reports. He reminds me of a Paddy Considine character in a Shane Meadows film.

Enjoying our week out in La Tania. Been more or less trapped in courcheval the last few days so it was great to have the sun and links open today. Great skiing out there. So much powder which was a lot of fun. 1m deep down creux today.

Right… I’m two weeks away from travelling to Val Thorens. It’s my first trip to the area and I’m just trying to get an idea of options for Day 1.
“Rond Point des Pistes” seems to be the resort level area where two of our party will start their day for lessons.
What lifts run from this area? That way, we can drop the girls off for their lessons and hit the best lift out and burn 2/3 hours hard skiing before lunch!
Is it worth picking up the Belleville Valley pass as opposed to the Val Thorens-Orelle pass?

@letsgetpiste, for the lifts, have a look at the piste map from the www.valthorens.com website.
Lift pass costs for one day are:
VT & Orelle 150km of piste 49 euro
Vallee de Belleville 300 km of piste 55.50 euro
3 Valleys 600km for 59 euro
I guess it depends whether you want to stay local or go further afield! You may find it makes more sense to buy a pass for the whole of the time you are there though.

@letsgetpiste, just posted some comments and suggestions in the other thread you asked the question in. And, yes “Rond Point des Pistes” is at the the bottom of the Pionniers ski lift (also the bottom of one of the magic carpets) and is the ski schools meeting point.

Thanks both @Handy Turnip, &@andy1234!
With our group setup I don't think we will get out over to meribel or courcheval. The Belleville valley option looks good to keep the 3 lads busy (Dad, brother, myself, have about 25 years on the slopes) on some more technical stuff up from VT during the mornings with the option of keeping to blues with the girls in the afternoon. Les Menuires seems to have more easy runs

Meribel and Couchevel valleys were main targets today. Snow still falling and powder everywhere. Lower altitudes had best vis. Pistes often could be described as off piste. Some serious deep stuff could be found around tree line in both valleys off piste though. Another full on day. Skinfull of beer at end too because we deserve it !

Lovely light snow under ski today. Just perfect. Temperatures dropping nicely. Snow falling down to the valley floor at the moment. Reports of the sun making an appearance soon!

@offpisteskiing, good pics. I'm just back from a few days in 3v. Usually I board but this year I've been learning to ski. I spent a lot of time on chairlifts looking enviously at the powder this week. I did think the snowpack looked generally unstable mind you, even on pretty gently slopes. Do you think it is likely to bond up in the next few weeks or is the instability likely to stay?

I'm just about to set off for Courchevel, arriving tomorrow morning for a BASI mountain safety course over the following week. I'll try and give a few updates on the conditions while I'm there next week.

There was some deep snow out there in Courchevel today!! Had an awesome day putting in the turns in the safe off piste but can't believe where some people were skiing. Those of you coming out in the next few weeks will have great conditions.

@monkey, all depends on the weather... If it stays very cold then that will tend to preserve any instabilities, if it goes a bit mild then things will trend towards stability.

Today was quite good...
A (very) rare day off sans kids, so time to revisit some old stomping grounds while everyone fought it out over the powder higher up.
3 laps of perfection with not a soul about.

@offpisteskiing no probs at least you were filming some good shite, rather than 10cm of powder on the piste. Just glad you did not say that was your group I took the pictures of

Wow! 3Vs conditions generally fantastic - powder galore again today and our first blue sky day of the week. However, bit surprised that:
- They don't seem very keen on grooming anything at all - never seen a piste basher all week; lots of runs you'd expect to be groomed aren't. All fine by us but very challenging for beginners etc.
- A foot of fresh can get skied off in about 2 hrs to leave some busy runs very slick (eg down to St Martin).
VERY cold today - minus 18C plus severe wind chill at the top of Val T - alarmingly, Mrs MA's nose tip went totally white - the beginnings of frost bite ....

Arrived this morning and skied this afternoon. The cloud was down to about 2000m and it snowed lightly all afternoon so I mostly stayed below that, particularly taking advantage of the trees down to La Tania and Courchevel 1850. By the time I got going any fresh snow off the sides of the pistes was skied, but the piste conditions were generally excellent as you might expect. More of the same tomorrow by the look of it, perhaps getting colder too.

More light snow pretty much all day, with the peaks in the cloud but better visibility lower down. Found plenty of safe powder to ski around Moriond. Very quiet in the resort, no queues for the lifts and pistes in mostly great condition. Couldn't ask for more really (well maybe a little sunshine would be nice, but I'm not complaining).
