We have friends in Morzine who still remember the evening it took them 70 minutes to get from their apartment to us in Les Gets. That was in one of those early weeks in December, early for skiing, around the 18th December. There was a whole lot of snow in Morzine snd Les Gets then.

Yeah, but, @foxtrotzulu, just how much time have you spent there? |
I've only spent a total of three weeks in the area, which is hardly a fair assessment, but it always seemed to be wet, grey and snowless when every other resort was several feet deep in snow.
To be fair, you probably can't judge Morzine in the way you might judge other ski resorts. It's obviously a lot lower than most places so, realistically, it's never going to get that much snow, but on the other hand it does offer excellent access to the PdS - probably far better than many of the other resorts that are actually up the mountain. And, I think I'm right in saying it does all this at a reasonable price. As I say, I've never actually seen snow in Morzine but I do appreciate that it must get some. I am one of those shallow people who likes a ski resort to look like a ski resort. All white and snowy with big piles of the stuff on the roof etc.

And with hour long queues to leaves resort and two hour delays to flights because of all the other delays?
Don't worry, I know what you mean, Morzine village is quite low and when there's weather, well, there's weather.
But it can be really quite lovely.

Last year the season had a slow start in Morzine. Some snow on 27th December then a gap until 14th January (approx). At times after that there was 30cm on the balcony. There was even some good powder skiing on the Pleney side. Waiting to see what happens this year. Was snowing higher up today. Rain / sleet and some snow flurries at village level. Hoping for a good season.

Very fun powder day today, was still snowing at Ardent at 5pm. Sorted out much of the light off-piste between and to the side of runs around Lindarets, Chatel and Prodains, but more snow needed to make it all vintage.
A fantastic day out, soft fluffy bumps, no crowds. If it stays cold, the season has had the start it needs!

Also was having some trouble getting grip on yesterday's swept, end of day pistes. Was getting quite frustrated.
One of my skis had cracked laterally right under the rear binding mount - no strength, and binding was loose.
Borrowed a friend's Line Sick Day 95s today. All good again!

Beautiful in Les Gets this morning. Proper fluffy snow. Not much visibility to be fair but, still, SNOW!

It was indeed very nice in Les Gets this morning. We were in the Rosta bowl where it was quite cloudy till about 11 when we stopped for chocolate chaud at the Rossetaz,so our son could pay off his tab from yesterday's they don't take cards. Not sure if I knew that or not, but we rarely lunch there. Then the sun came out, we went over to the Vorosses as the drag was running from La Turche, so nipped into La Paika for a vin chaud, and after that were heading back to the Nauchets but the Belle Mouille 3 man opened so went up that. Large mound of snow at the bottom of the lift so a few people who didn't have their tips up high enough lost their skis. Went across to the Tulip, which was still fairly pristine, Nauchets, Chavannes and down to the lake and home to let the dog out. I feel so bad for all my family who were here in the green and pleasant land last week, but we will now enjoy it.

Most of the webcams are now showing nicer "white" images.. but the Morzine "Front de Neige" still looks as green as my garden, and the PdS app is still showing only 100/300 runs open. Is it still too warm to make snow on the upper slopes and push it downhill.

Good to hear that more is opening up, but I imagine it will take more snow and a lot more time to get close to fully open. They must have laid off staff, and weather looks like staying unsettled

It's still relatively mild for this time of year, mostly. Making enough snow from cannons on the upper slopes to move to lower altitudes to provide cover for the entire piste network on the lower slopes is not a feasible option, especially across the entire PDS.

Should be cold enough for then next couple of days for snowmaking down to 1300m or so. At 100% humidity you can make snow at a temperature of -2C or lower. Eventually I expect they will push snow downhill if needed to patch up the remaining unopened lower slopes, but priority will be in getting all the main mid and upper level pistes open first.

Must confess I've seen them trucking snow in from elsewhere (or by helicopter) but never pushing it downhill...

Is anyone skiing Les Gets tomorrow? I am here with a friend and unfortunately I got mowed down from behind by a young french lad this afternoon and 'did something' to my shoulder/elbow such that I think skiing tomorrow is an unlikely prospect. If anyone was around that my friend who is late 40's solid intermediate could ski with for a couple of hours I am sure she would appreciate it.

anyone got a link for an interactive piste plan of the PDS. Chatel in particular. I'd like to see which lifts are currently open.

I'm guessing that's for patching key pistes rather than covering mile upon mile of the piste map.

it can't be live, there's about 40% showing as open.
For some reason only the Morzine section shows which ones are 'about to open'

@under a new name, great isn't it.
The chairlift that gets you up from La Chapelle to Torgon and beyond is showing as open however every single piste (and adjoining lift) around it is showing as closed.
I can only assume that they are letting people know that the chair lift actually works, although it means that your only option is to sit on it going up and down all day long.

@Annie, we will be skiing in Les Gets tomorrow and could ski with your friend if that would help. We are a bit more than a touch older but if that doesn't matter suggest meeting at the Croix Blanche on the Chavannes at 10.30 for a quick coffee with you and your friend. I will PM you our phone numbers.

Fair enough. That makes sense.
What's the word on the street about more lifts and pistes opening? Looks like I may have to bus it from my apartment to Chatel and back every day, unless the area around the Panthiaz/Tronchey chair opens in the next few days. Any idea how that area is looking at the moment?

Heading out to Les Gets on Friday evening, does anyone know whether it is likely they will start opening more of the lifts this weekend, currently the TDS des perrieres lift hasn't seemed to have opened yet this season, I presume down to snow coverage?
Only ask as our apartment is a short walk from there......
Any onsite info greatly appreciated!

We have been out this morning. Pointe de Nyon lift running and lovely and quiet. The Chamossiere looked very busy. Ranfoilly lift running but absolutely chaotic at the top when we were there as,there is a big fenced off bit just below the top, we think a hole maybe from the floods back in May which swept a lot of land away, but there were what looked like school parties up there with no instruction and bodies lying down and upright all over the remaining slope. We were able to wiggle our way through and get away. Then all the way back via the Nauchets and a quick coffee at the lake on the way home to get dogs out and relieve visiting other granny from babysitting.
Piste bashers spotted on MC this morning so that may open soon.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Pamski it's not from the flooding, there is a natural dip there that's usually filled in with snow so probably that. The pistes haven't yet been profiled as they usually are for winter which makes it even more interesting. All of the damage from the flooding has been repaired over the interseason.
MC May open this weekend. Apparently there's loads of snow up top. I think it will depend if whatever arrives tomorrow is wet or white.
Currently snowing again after a morning of good visibility and lovely snow in LG

@Pamski, the coverage is still so thin and hasn't been spread out as it usually is before things open. That's the only thing I can think it is but to be fair the last time I walked up there was October so they may have done something.
Proper snowing in the village.

We've been in Chatel since the weekend and the conditions are getting better every day. The first three days we skied at PLJ and although a little scraped in places especially high traffic/steeper sections the pistes were well covered. Yesterday we even managed some closed pistes and the coverage was pretty good in very open areas. Much better than expected.
Today we took a chance on Super Chatel - Conche chair, all the baby drags, the 2 Coqs, Chermillion and Chalet Neuf were running and we had a great day with very few people about until the beginner areas were swamped by hordes of children in the afternoon - we steered well clear! It's snowing as I write and has been for a couple of hours and is expected to continue for the same this evening.
We'll wait to see what tomorrow brings with the next storm and the higher freezing level - looks like the temperature's going to drop like a stone next week with more snow so all is not lost for the lower pistes.
