Probably not far off that mark already, started snowing about 2ish and still going down in resort.
Mountain rescue had to go to their first Avalanche burial of the season yesterday, Stuben North Face. Buried 2m under but the friends with him got him out within 10 minutes,

@sah Well, unofficially, I call it "Toadman's Delight" But it's better known as above Blue 38 of the Ruffikopf Tram, and above the Schuttiboden t-bar. Located skiers right actually. It's hike to terrain. You take the same path as you would if you were going into the Langerzug area for Itinerary 37.

More on the Avalanche on Albonagrat yesterday. 30yr Swedish Snowboarder.
Jumped over a cornice, on landing triggired a slab avalanche. 240 metres long, was buried under a 1+ metre. His companions dug him out in 10 mins so was very lucky. Rescue services (Police Helicopter, 2 Rescue Dog Handlers)
|
I saw it from Albona chairlift. Swedish guy was really jumping over cornice. And he was really lucky. It was 5 or 6 people below him, but far away. If he had jumped 1 or 2 minutes before, it would be more victims definitely.

Hey what's the luggage storage situation like at the station? Is it plentiful, or is it a fight to store? I'll need to stash a large backpack there on Wednesday 20th & Saturday 23rd January and I'm concerned particularly for the Saturday because I can't get there before 11am.

Launching off cornices is pretty stupid at the best of times, but taking air on to unstable slopes with people below is insane. If there's any weak layer buried in the pack then jumping from a height is a great way to trigger it. The folks involved need to get themselves some avalanche education.

There are certainly a few lockers but I guess Saturday might be busy. Maybe reserve the locker the night before and leave it empty until Saturday?

The news article linked to by Stanton says that they did carry out a "belastungstest", ie a weight test to see the stability of the snow. Added to the fact they got the snowboarder out within 10 minutes shows that maybe they do know what they are doing?
|
|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
@Sitter, Agreed, all that said I wouldn't want to be jumping cornices onto north face given the size of the rocks under there and the fact that a week earlier it had hardly any coverage. I reckon it needs 2 weeks minimum yet before entering that sort of terrain - hang on that's when I go back!

OK, the fact they did a self rescue means that at least they were equipped and knew how to search, but they still endangered others just for a bit of fun jumping off a cornice.
Cornices are an absolute give away as far as warning signs go - overhanging snow due to wind action guarantees that there will be wind-slab underneath.

Maybe, he was not definitely first. Before him, I saw at least 3 or 4 guys who has jumped. Other groups choose a little bit more flat route.

@Dr John, very sorry to hear about your mate. Innocuous terrain sometimes leads to horrible injuries, I've seen broken tib/fib on blue runs before, and ACLs torn just from tripping over in a lift queue. Partly it's because low energy falls don't trigger a release. Hope he's getting good care and recovers well. Is he in Innsbruck?
You won't see much sun this week by the looks of it, make the most of it if it does appear. A trip to Lech is a good plan if you want to ski pistes and see where you're going, the trees around Oberlech make for much better visibility, and no one in Lech goes outside if it's snowing;-)

I may have been a bit harsh in this guy, but fair play to him, if he went through that and managed to ride home I'd have bought him a beer in the KK.

@sah, yep, surgeon is the Austrian ski team guy apparently (or ex, something like that). He's good for lunch right now in hozpitzalm. You're correct, food is meh but the wine list is epic. Sun came out today so been hooning around on epic squeaky snow. Back out late March.

Trying my hardest not to look at webcams and think about St Anton skiing, but having spent much of this weekend patching up and edging/ waxing our skis after the festive ice and piste bashing, and also greasing Dynafit bindings, then packing hardware for next trip thoughts now turning to the fact it's only 10 days away. Booked another full week of gym classes and my spin bike getting some serious action too......love this time of year.
@Dr John, your mate has been in good hands there, those guys are the best.......

Local rumour has it that the continued closure of red 21 is down to trying to keep people at the new and hugely expensive Gampen bar, obviously at the expense of KK/MW/Taps. MM said to be livid. Vicious local politics at play.

@Dr John, Really cant see that.....MM is a hugely well respected guy in town and whilst the Bergbahn do have a vested interest in Gampen restaurant, and I'm sure they'd prefer to keep folks higher up rather than let them drop into bars lower down there's plenty of other ways to get there if you wanted to go to KK/ MW and others.
