Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Quick couple of questions - hoping one of the local experts can help!

Is the Derochoir pisted? - it is on a paper piste map from last year but not on the "official" online paradiski map

Can you do one run from the traversee all the way to Montchavin? Is it worth it? If not, what is the longest single run on the La Plagne side?

(Sorry if the questions are a bit numb, the piste maps aren't the clearest - would the odd direction arrow hurt?)

Only two more weeks till we hit the slopes - can't wait!

mnp, This years piste map is here
http://www.perso-laplagne.fr/PlanPistes.htm
Derochoir is marked as Natur which means not pisted but is only open when conditions are god and avalanche risk is low
The longest run is Mont Blanc afaik

Boredsurfing, I new that was going to happen after the trouble they have had to keep it open and pisted since they put it in. Now that area is going to be offically closed most of the time as keeping it safe is also going to be quite hard. You had better ski in the off piste area to be sure you are insured when you do ski down there on a good powder day and they keep it closed. Twisted Evil

What a waste of time putting it in, all they did was spoil a nice nature area IMHO. Evil or Very Mad

mnp, yes, if you are a good skier, you can ski th whole way to Montchavin from the Traversee chair (upgraded this year Wow!!!) It is a really good ski and a long way, but better to be lazy like us and take the chair up to the ridge at Frolin and miss the long push down the track. Then you can ski all the way down to the village off piste if you know the way or on the piste. Have fun!!! Toofy Grin

Been out for my first ski of the season Very Happy Very Happy wonderful snow and that's just on piste! Very Happy Very Happy Didn't do much, snowing and poor vis initially (I'm a fair weather skier Sad ) but 1800 to La Roche for Vin chaud, back up to the top down to 1800 via a restaurant for 'lunch' then back up the 1800 lift through centre and back to 1800 Very Happy Like I said - short and sweet. Embarrassing really but trying to ease my knee into things gently Very Happy Skiing was fine, the walk back up to my accomm didn't do the knee any good!!! Should have gone off piste back to the appartment instead of trying to wade through snow/sidestep Very Happy !!!

can't wait to learn how to ski off piste and get my knee used to the idea of skiing 6 days a week Very Happy Very Happy

Looking forward to more snow tonight and another 'go' tomorrow Very Happy

xx

Anybody in la Plagne this week? if so any explanation as to why many of the lifts are not open yet?? It would appear only about 20% appear to be open. We are arriving on the weekend 22/12 it would be nice to know it will all be open by then.

My guess is that because it hasn't really stopped snowing in the last 2 weeks (except the odd day here and there), the pisteurs haven't been able to blast and make safe much of the higher stuff to allow it to be opened.

EDIT: HOLD ON! Didn't La Plagne open a matter of days ago?! Give them a chance dude. The whole Paradiski area doesn't even open till the week after La Plagne usually. I would imagine if you're arriving on the 22nd, most of it will be up and running in the first few days. Xmas week is a biggen Smile

Paradiski opens on the 22nd. We've had virtually constant snow for two weeks! they are working at getting the lifts open but also blasting most of the day, so I guess that it's safety issues that are causing the delays?

I've never seen so much snow so early Smile (not saying much as this is only my third season!!! but it is an amazing amount of snow Smile )

Looks like they've now pisted up on Roche De Mio, so opening of that section should be soon [EDIT - webcam now showing skiers on RdM]

A webcam up at the top of L'Arpette chair would be a nice addition at some point

La Plagne altitude resorts always open one week BEFORE the villages (Ie those NOT on the ski bus network) Paradiski links open when the lower villages open, this has been the case fir the last 5 seasons with the exception of 3 years ago when it all opened at once!

Again, good to know. Not something I've looked into before as I think the limited opening has been when we were in training so not allowed to ski - and this year they have opened La Plagne a week later than last year. I'm very confused!! But looking forward to Saturday when everything is open LOL Very Happy

Take the "Pots" or bus from Plagne Centre up to Plagne Villages, cross over the road and up the slope next to the bars/Spar. The right-hand drag has been free for previous seasons (and when you've had enough, you can ski back down to PC)

That drag is where I'll be for a couple of hours on the afternoon of Sun 30th if we get there early enough.

Looks like another spectacular day for Chaletgirl and the others out there already

Thanks a lot ukredsox ! Going to be in TerraNova which is a big hotel at the bottom end of PC. I just found a website which states the yog pots are the 'Telebus' lift which as you said is free, right next to the hotel so ill be jumping on that to villages for a quick warm before sunday.

Also anyone know of anything happening for christmas eve and day? When we were in meribel for christmas 2 years ago there was vin chaude and carols in one bar that was brilliant and all the intstructors have a drink at the top of the hill and ski down with candles ( we missed this as we were still at Apres =p ). Wandered what the sketch was

normally in france there's vin chaud outside the office de tourisme or ESF, a torchlight descent by the instructors, the arrival of pere noel (by various means, parapente, sledge, ski...!) and usually some fireworks. (only ever known the french miss a chance for some feux d'artifices once, that was in serre chevalier where they did *nothing*, miserable sods).

All the above on christmas eve, business as usual on christmas day.

Well, snow report: amazing. Weather: variable. Had a few days with some good visibility, but most days have fairly flat light at the mo. can't complain, as I've rarely seen snow this good, and never this early in the season!

I'm boarding solo most days as friends are working a lot so if anyone coming out wants to be shown a few runs, or grab some après, give me a shout via pm... And chaletgirl, I'll catch you soon when we get a mutually convenient time... GL with transfer day today... I've never been riding on transfer day today, been riding virtually empty pistes since 9am - and laid down a lot of freshies above Les Coches! Smile

all smooth until Grenoble - then outgoing guests delayed cos incoming flight delayed. pouring rain so got soaked whilst sorting guests onto coaches. huge delays in transfer back to resort including the police insisting we put snow chains on the coach even though the one before us made it up without. last drop off at 10pm followed by sorting paperwork and chalet visits to deal with 'stuff' till 1.20am Sad

The snow in Champagny was good today as well, not quite as good as yesterday but pretty good considering the rain we had last night.

Does anybody know why the Inversens chairlift has been closed?

The snow looked pretty unstable close to the Mercedes black run yesterday, looking at it from the chairlift on the Plagne Centre side, it looked as though the merest touch could trigger an avalanche. The piste had been closed off but we still saw a couple of boarders venturing down there.

skichampcouk, Inversens and Crozats (alongwith glacier lifts) were (are? - i left yesterday evening) closed to prevent idiots dashing off into dangerous off-piste. The snow is hardly stuck to the mountain in places - I bet you've seen full thickness slab avalanches all over the place exposing the bare mountain - and the slopes below Crozats and around Inversens are a magnet to off-piste addicts.

Roger C, I do believe I meant champagny rolling eyes

Not a bad couple of days, although we seem to be hampered by hangovers, went in a minibus with some crazy french seasonaires to a reggae bar in bellecote until 4 on sunday night/monday morn then in the mouth from 9 until 1:30. Went to play toss the boss and one a pitcher and 2 rounds of shots for 7 ppl which aint bad!

Ohh yeh the skiing....hehe really good above bellecote and oover towarfs the lift to les arc, going over there tomorrow cos rest of the week snow is coming in woop woop. Also swapped my twin tips for my mates for a few runs down a green, what epic fun that was although a bit crap at first when I was falling over
