Whitegold, good to hear, but I thought it was due to start snowing heavily again tonight/tomorrow? Oh well, nothing to be done now, except hope for the best.
James the Last, I don't really expect to hear anything else, but I'll certainly post if I do. Will you do the same? The MW guy said the incoming people will be put up somewhere in the valley if necessary, since the flight should not be affected. Thank heaven I'm not flying into Innsbruck, which scares the whatsits out of me at the best of times. Friedrichshafen is nice and tame, apparently.

I left yesterday and had planned to take the 1pm train to Zurich but it still hadn't arrived at 2.30pm due to a fallen tree. I got together with a few others, one of whom hastily called Arlberg Express and arranged a 9 seater to take us to Zurich airport for a 7pm flight. We got there at 5.20pm, it was all pretty stressful. Awesome fortnight of skiing though

James the Last, There is another BIG storm tomorrow continuiong through Monday
I would just leave it up to your TO to sort out your arrangements.
Next Week the variable unseasonable winter/spring like conditions continue.
From Wednesday the sun will be out but temperatures and the freeze level will rise again above 2000M.

On way from Zurich on the Arlberg Express and we've been told that the road to St Anton will be closed after 15.00 hours and as such we will be taken as far as Bludenz where hotels have been reserved for us until tomorrow.
Can anyone there now give me any more information on the road situation and has an avalanche happened today?

nozawaonsen, oooh thanks for the info.
Are these shutttles running from the train station itself or do you mean the bus station? Just to clarify?
Thanks for letting me know

I think you'd have to go back to 1999, and before the the mid 80s. I don't know the stats, but 1999 was a pretty dreadful year for avalanches (Galtür and Le Tour in particular). Place like Lech/Zürs were cut off for many days (more than a week I think in some cases).

This will be my 10th trip to StA (leave in 3 weeks) and in that time I have not seen anything like it. I have seen 50cm falls, and those have shut the top of the mountain for 1 to 2 days, sometimes longer. I struggle to imagine what it looks like now.
What a change from last Feb...

Well. We are still in Bludenz unfortunately albeit in good spirits.
We couldn't go any further by bus today, so then we tried the shuttle train from Bludenz to St Anton. The train arrived quite a bit late, but didn't actually set off. Apparently a tree fell across the line, scuppering the arrangements.
No more trains tonight so we are in a nice hotel having some tasty dinner and then we will try again to get to St Anton tomorrow.
What's our best bet? Road or train first thing tomorrow do you reckon?

Spoke to the proprietor of a hotel we use in St Anton tonight, said it's like 1999 when we were there and cut off. Her Saturday arrivals all spent last night in Bludenz and Pettneu at leisure centres, today they arrived and tonight's party night!

I expect a lot of rescue incidents this week,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
The risk is stilll & always very high for at least the next 6 days.

Pretty sure the Guides will stick to the safer stuff (e.g. avi controlled near the piste). They might be super-human with regards to their skiing abilities but they are still human. The fully qualified guides are also called up to help in finding avalanche victims. A guide I once skiied with was called up to search for someone who had skied without a guide who had been hit by a heavy snow avalanche. The guide cut the day short at 15:00 to join the search but met us for a couple of apres drinks 3 hours later. Although he tried his best to please his customers at Apres ski it was clear that recovering body parts had affected him. If money was their main interest they wouldn't be guiding.

But Whitegold and others, completely irrelevant for road closures.
Had the most amazing morning's skiing. Nobody at all in resort. It wasn't until 10am on Rendl that we saw more than half a dozen people - quite spooky. Snow absolutely superb; 12-18" of powder even on the pistes, completely untouched, even by 1pm when we had to go. I need to learn proeprly what to do with it...
Coach out booked for 14.50. We were back at the chalet at 14.00 for shower/change; suddenly at 14.15 the coach arrived and a big panic to load us onto the bus to get us out before the resort road shut at 3pm. The coach left without some guests - they were packed into a cab which broke all speed limits in "the most terrifying drive of my life" as one reported, and caught up the bus. We then got onto the S16 tunnel heading westwards and were told we were off to Friedrichshafen, not Innsbruck. After a few miles we left the main road, and went on empty country roads for miles, through the village of Klosterle - the main road must have been shut. It was like a war zone; no traffic or people about, men clearing snow everywhere. And what snow. Meanwhile the snow continued to fall from the sky - a good 50cm yesterday according to http://lawine.tirol.gv.at/schnee-und-lawineninfo/messstationen/r1-arlberg-ausserfern/galzig/
All credit to Ski Total for getting us out with the minimum of fuss, and reportedly our slightly late return to Gatwick was the fault of the x-ray scanners at Friedrichshafen rather than anything else.
We did feel sorry for the incoming passengers who were not going to their resort. Ischgl also apparently cut off.

That's also a photo of pretty old snow (notice the colour on the dirt on the top surface, how clear the tarmac is, lack of snow on the trees, no snow on the parked cars, etc). That's not a photo of the big storm that just went through the Alberg in the last three days.
