Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Relax 2 weeks is a long time in the Alps. Also you are only causing yourself stress worrying and checking webcams every 3-4 minutes, in reality what are you going to do, cancel your holiday? There is plenty here.

Stress? I think not. Smile I was just after an accurate account of current conditions.
So... does this reflect the reality of what's in resort?
On piste: Hard
Off piste: Tracked
Resort runs: Icy

For those of us not fortunate enough to be 'in resort' it's useful to have clear reports of conditions on and off piste. It may save us expensive base repairs if we know in advance that the runs to say Vallandry or Montchavin aren't in good nick. It may help me deal with our kids expectations of where we can go as well.
The forecast 6-9 days doesn't suggest a 'dump of snow is imminent. Last year forecast was was very similar (but I think was on a better base )and it turned out to be rather accurate. Sad

BMF_Skier,

when I left on Sunday the resort was exactly as you describe:

The pisteurs are doing a terrific job keeping it open, but you will lose your bases if there is no more snow... much like SmallW did last week.

Sorry if people don't want to tell you that, but 'speak as you find' works for me.

OTOH the new sledge run from the top of Transarc to the bottom of Arcabulle is 3km of mad, insane, magnificence, and you will have to do it with the minis.
And Mega. wink

C'mon the snow then! As a boarder there is nothing worse than that scratchy nasty icy sound of your edges blunting on a rocky piste! We are actually getting free hire in our package this time so Im gonna grab some skis if its ropey, scare myself on them instead =)

Well I'm heading out to Vallandry on the 14th and I'm not too concerned at the moment - I know you can't judge the feel of the pistes from them, but there looks to be plenty of snow on the various webcams.

In the last umpteen years we have been going, there has always been plenty of skiing, even in the really bad Xmas of 06. Maybe it's not as critical for me as I tend to cruise the runs with kids in tow and have no interest in finding deep powder on untracked off-piste runs (no ability to be strictly accurate).

And it will be the hire shop who lose their bases Toofy Grin

Hehe, funny!

I think alot of boarders underestimate the length of time, and the control it requires to stop on anything icy and the beginners rental gear always seems to have zero edge anyway, plus we start with less than half the effective edge of two skis! Nothing scarier than watching that boarder, bum down, edge bouncing above the icy piste as they gather speed towards the ski school! Mind you watching a skier bounce from one mogul to another straight towards you is also pretty scary =)

Looks like a good 20cms might be on the way at the end of this week..fingers crossed, I leave on Sunday.

Hi all. I’m heading out to Arc 2000 on Sat 22nd Jan with 13 of my mates, and am very excited. Taken a bit of organising, but it’s all done now with our equipment and lessons booked on top of the accommodation at Chalet Vanoise.

It’s taken some doing, but I’ve read back through this thread, and there’s loads of useful info. However, one thing I’m wondering is whether there are any shops in the resort? Since we’ll have the chalet to ourselves, we thought it might be worth trying to save a bit of cash by just getting booze in for a few nights in rather than hitting the usually expensive bars every night. Is there a supermarket or anything within walking distance, or should we try and stop off somewhere on the transfer?

Also, it’s a bit late now, but is anyone familiar with Chalet Vanoise? Anything worth knowing about it in advance of getting there?

18 days to go, so here's hoping for lots of snow between now and then!

Spent most of the day in La Plagne today. Very cold there, most overcast with even a few flakes of snow in the afternoon. a few to many stones showing through on certain runs.
We had wanted to do the new black run from mid station on the glacier but it was closed. Hopefully that run isn't like Crozats and shut every time we go to do it. We had lunch in the restaurant in la Roche by the lift. Regular stop for us, lovely food there.

Did a bit in Les Arcs this afternoon but in and finished. Of to collect kids from their instructor. For those interested looking out the window I can see snow, but at 2,200m if I couldn't see snow in January that would be a bit strange.

tjdcollins, Even though we own up in 2000 we find the best shop is the Spar down in 1950, there is a free lift down to it and the shop has a bit selection of booze. Like every high ski resort though you will pay a premium for stuff up here, so if you can avoid then best buy on the way here in a lower supermarket, but the Spar will still most likely be cheaper than a bar? Good luck, no doubt someone will be along soon to criticise and correct me.

tjdcollins, thefatcontroller is right about a good selections at the 1950 spar. Another place to try is Georges Wine Bar in 1950, which sells beer as well as wine ( London Pride Sam Smiths etc.): you can get bottles of decent local plonk for about 6 or 7 Euros 'to go', or 14 to drink on the premises.

At the moment, I don't believe there is access to Villaroger without hire skis wink

BMF_Skier, buy tickets at €7.50 a go up at the Grotte de Glace, leave your skis at the top, then act as a pedestrian back up Arcabulle.

Sorry - probably shouldn't have told your tribe that!

Saftey Elves do say "no under 12yo or under 125cm" ... but neither enforced when we did it.

JimW, Thanks for the update. At €7.50 we may well give that a go. The 11 yrs old girl (going on 18yrs!) should be OK, but it's the lad who's 8yrs that we may have a problem getting passed the 'elves'. Do they allow you to ride two to a sledge?

Since the New Year we have been hitting the back country and enjoying the sunny days whilst hunting for fresh untracked powder. Quite shallow, but it is powder on a firm base. On the steeper slopes the snow has become firm and chalky in texture. In the more sheltered areas it is light granules as if it were spring time in places. Then you hit the crud and even breakable crust. So you need to be light on your feet and very relaxed to adapt to the every changing conditions. Great fun and a real challenge at times. But what is best is we are away from all the crowds!! Although not that many crowds now.

Having covered most back country valleys in the past week, speaking with the local guides and pisteurs the feeling is the conditions are getting quite stable, but when the new snow arrives it could become very tricky again so take care out there. I have posted pics of some of the places we have been on my facebook group page for those that are interested. Link below.

On the pistes across the whole Paradiski area (Les Arcs and La Plagne) I have found most of the main pistes to be a mix of icy patches, hard base, moguls or firm chalky snow. So you will find a bit of everything when you get here. You can still get down to the second lift on the Villaroger side if you do not mind the stones Toofy Grin but it is not good. The new Black piste in La Plagne is skiable but closed and does not look like it will open any time soon, but it is still a great off piste area to ski.

On the Arc 1600 side all runs are passable, but stony in places with the odd bare patch to keep an eye open for. On the Arc 1800 side it is much the same, but the forests in both areas are fun as long as you stay in control and look out for rocks and tree roots.

Going down to Peisey Vallandry on the runs with canons is good. Firm and fun for carving but very icy in places.

In the Arc 2000 bowl the whole area is skiable but even there you will find the odd bare patch and plenty of hard firm or icy pistes. But despite all this, the pistes are holding up well and with new snow on the way later in the week. It should be good next week.

One problem is that most of the nature ride pistes are still closed so unless you are willing to go off piste or ski closed areas your adventure skiing is limited. Evil or Very Mad

However the girls are both 'just' nine, (early December) and the least confident had her dad about 5 m behind on his tea-tray during the descent (he then went again to see what the real possibilities were!). If yer boy is average+ for an 8, I think you'll be able to blag it.

Not so cold today. No new snow. Skied local today. Mostly around 1600 and the 2000 bowl. Good fun. Conditions are best described as a week for hire skis. Comborciere was shut today. Saw a couple of drunk kids nearly kill themselves this afternoon on the blue that goes from the top of Comborciere to 1600. One managed to knock another over and take a girl of the piste to be saved from a sheer drop by some netting. We left them to get themselves. They were to pissed to care about. The new pulley lift in the 2000 bowl makes a big difference. No polling Lots of grey clouds around tonight so hope of fresh snow. Quote of the day from our 9 year old. ' Are there lots of dead snow boarders in Les Arcs as everywhere I look Daddy they are lying on the slopes'. Answers on a postcard please........

Today started out with blue sky. By 1pm the clouds had arrived and the rest of the day was spent skiing in flat light. Not much sign of the snow that has been promised yet, but the clouds are here so fingers crossed. Although the pistes are busy now and there have been a few bad crashes where skiers have collided. The conditions are still OK for this time of year and the snow cover, although hard packed is good on most pistes.

Spent a couple of hours doing Arvie training with the pisteurs this morning. Very interesting and well worth the effort. Then over to the snowpark. Plenty for everyone there with the green and red jumps complete and some black jumps as well. Also a whole new rail section and other sliding things that I shall stay away from. They hurt!!!

The boarder cross will be built soon on the other side of the piste this year down to the altiport. They will also have a new webcam soon so you can look at the jumps from your armchairs at home.

The new T bar tow is entertaining as many younger people have never seen one before. They have a new game called catch me if you can, dropping down to the T bar below and catching hold. Think the pisteurs are not very happy about it.

The Boarder cross over in the Arc 2000 bowl is also open and fun but quite easy.

Most of the Nature Ride pistes are still closed as they are in need of more snow cover (what the pisteurs say).

Despite the need for more snow, the resort is holding up well and has plenty of places to ski or board, but the ground is very hard if you fall down.

Cheers for the replies guys, glad to know there's some options for getting cheap beer!

Does anyone know where you can download a decent 2010/11 piste map for Les Arcs? The only properly readable one I've found is at least a couple of years old, and that doesn't provide accurate enough information for day-dreaming to get me through the next 2 and a half weeks!

Hope the weather picks up, but currently I'm glad that I didn't pick this year to invest in my own skis.

It is now the month of University students so loads of parties in Arc 1800 and plenty of costumes or lack of any clothing at all on the pistes, even in the cold. Must be British, nobody else is that silly when it is -5 or so.

The weekly Arpette evening party and ski down is runnning on a number of evenings over the next few weeks and 'Bar King Mad' have resident DJ plus guest DJ at least twice a week normally on Tuesday and Thursday in Arc 1800, Villard end.

George's Wine Bar in Arc 1950 is also the place to hang out if you are over that side of the mountains. The Bowling in Arc 2000 is a good place for late drinks after the Gondala between Arc 1950 and 2000 has closed.

If you are out, I hope to see you in one of these place during the week. Party on!! Twisted Evil Toofy Grin

One better than me... not even bothering skiing today, looking out the window it's now gently raining in Vallandry.. no sign of any of the promised snow.

Many resort level pistes yesterday, had some stones and rocks showng through, most 'between piste' is totally trashed...
