Lovely blue skies and great pistes up until mid afternoon.
We skied from Corvara to Seceda and back. The normally busy area at the top of the ciampanoi lift was noticeably quiet but the lifts in Seceda were quite busy, 15 min wait for the cable car up to the top.
But on the way over mid morning the pistes Cir, Saaslong and La Longia were pretty much perfect. Felt like Alberto Tomba until 3pm when the pistes turned and I became Mr Bean

Started the day at Ciampinoi, down Saslong, over to Col Raiser, Fermeda was perfect all day, one run down La Longia which was quiet but total mess on the way back up to Seceda, never been in a cable car that crowded, few more runs on Fermeda and back down to Santa Cristina, up Saslong, down to Piz Seteur tram and from top down back to Selva ... Last few runs were tricky (icy and bumpy and lots of out of control skiers).
Overall - perfect conditions, it is dropping well bellow zero overnight which allows for some snow making and "pisteurs" are doing great job.
Follow the sun as much as you can and avoid deep shaded runs in the afternoon, if possible ... Alpi di Suisi - sun galore !!!
I don't understand why some skiers decide to take "advanced" runs that are clearly above their level, yesterday I witnessed a carnage down to La Villa (from Piz La Ila) on fast and shaded/icy "black" run

yesterday was a wonderful day, skied non stop from 9.30 until 3 , I had to give up then as The knees couldn’t take anymore. Alpe. Di Siusi are really well looked after, all the slopes are nicely groomed and once the sun is out you can let yourself go. Of this holiday I will remember the hotel the most, I have never eaten so well and so much before. Scallops, sea bass, truffle just incredible food. Now back to reality, have fun if you are coming this week |

Skied the Ciampac area of Val Di Fassa today from Alba, not particularly busy and the snow was in good condition until late fternoon, resort was busy yesterday, much quieter tonight, hopefully all the weekend skiers will disappear tomorrow. Not sure of temperatures during the day, it’s now below freezing with clear skies.

Thank you everyone for all your reports. Every year it seems as if more and more Snowheads and different nationalities are visiting the Dolomites. A far cry from my first visit when most of the visitors seemed to be from Germany. Only a week to go till I'm back out to Seiser Alm. Looking like a warm week to come though. |
Just come back -- never seen it so busy in January : Sella Ronda was ridiculous and I avoided it...

Has anyone done the Sella Ronda this week? Just wondering how busy it is this week? We’re now in Corvara and had a lovely first day yesterday on the slopes around San Cassiano etc and found it generally not too busy, but not super quiet either!

Skiing in Passo tonale. It’s very mild, snow disappearing in front of your eyes, should be ok for the week I’m here, but temperatures climbing, if the weather don’t Schengen soon gonna be some disappointed February skiers.

Just finished our first day skiing at Seiser Alm. Quite warm early afternoon 10c at 2pm. But the snow was really good all day up to 3pm ish. Quite a few people about but most seemed to be in the huts and restaurants from 11am. So many slopes were quiet all day. Wasn't expecting that!! Lots of different nationalities. Eastern European, lots from the Balkans, Americans, Belgium, Germany, Uk, etc etc. If the rest of the week is like today I'm going to be very happy.

Beautiful sunny day.
We also Skied alp di suis / Seiser alm today. Mainly good conditions with the odd icy patch, the two blacks are in the sun all morning and were pretty slushy by the time we got there at 11ish so best done early. Interestingly more queues than we seen in most places but pistes still quiet.
If you like the outdoors rather than carving down pistes then Run 34 is a little gem.
Though is getting back to the gondola always a queue of people sliding down an icy “gully”?
Ps some snow would be nice to pretty everywhere up and help the pisteurs.

This is our 3rd week in Alta Badia, we’ve been on part of the SR most days and it’s almost always busy! Timing can help a lot, if doing clockwise (our preference) you get a slug of people arriving in Corvara 9:30 to 10:15 ish, presumably coming from Val Gardena. Either get out before them or after. Before obviously gives you better pistes later in the journey.

Yes a few queues but nothing too bad that we had. Upgrade of lifts certainly needed in places. Red 34 is a lovely run, though bit slow in the last part. Favourite run was red 30 of the top of the same lift as 34 goes down from. And yep, near carnage from the eurotel lift down to the gondola. Only section of piste we skied that was cut up with loads of mounds.

@albob, hello Albion, hope you had a nice time in Canazei.
Our hosts told us the lady had a heart attack and lost consciousness just after she sat down on the lift, her friend tried to hold her but the both fell from the lift. I have been trying to find out if the Second Lady is doing ok but cannot find any updates.

maybe it's all because of selective perception but I've heard about so many injuries, accidents, and deaths on the slopes. Especially, people in France have been having a pretty hard time with ice and hard surfaces. From what I'm seeing in the forecasts, the Dolomites are not due for any snowfall at least until the 11th of Feb. And the forecasts are quite unsure about the temps for next week. One update forecasts very warm conditions and then the other update predicts the whole week to be under 0. I think we talked about this before but is there new snow being made if the conditions are right or did they stop after completing the process at the beginning of the season?

As long as the conditions are right they'll make more snow if and when they need it.

@olderscot, oh good. someone mentioned that they were somehow not allowed to run the machines during the season but I don't remember the reason why.

There is a lot of understandable concerns posted on here re the snow conditions on how they will be.
I suspect most are from folk that have not been before?
Until you have been in a poor snow year it's difficult to workout how they manage the slopes and get and keep things nice and skiable.
The only times we have had issues is when there is falling snow and high winds. We have had days when it's difficult to ski but that's down to my levels of skill.

@Garfield, personally I've been skiing for the last 3 years and don't have much skiing experience outside of my country. In the last 2 years I've had insane amounts of snow in Europe whenever I went so this week in particular is a first for me I stopped minding the amount of snow as there is, literally, nothing I can do to change that but after reading the crazy accidents in France, I felt a bit nervous about the ice and extremely hard pistes. But I reckon the pistes around the Dolomites tend to stay in the best shape possible, right? Of course, I'm not the type of skier who would make poor decisions and ride through runs that are above my level. but as a group, we are excited to do some of the famous tours in the area like Sella Ronda, WW1, Hidden Valley, etc hopefully.

Another good day snow condition wise on Seiser Alm. Mostly skied the south facing slope runs this morning. No issues right through till we had lunch at 1pm. I thought it was still quiet today, maybe to do with starting early. Does seem like we're skiing on mostly man made snow but it's absolutely fine. Only cut up slope again was eurotel back to the gondola.

I did the sella Ronda today clockwise from Alba, all good as far a Selva, then after that not so much fun in the shade until Covara and after that very lumpy bumpy with hard pack beneath all the way to Pordoi, I found it very tiring on the legs from Corvara onwards, and won’t bother again this trip.

@defnekasrat, in Cortina I noticed huge mounds of artificial snow next to some lower slopes. Presumably sitting there ready for when they are needed to keep runs open come mid/late March. There's plenty already there to last through until then.
You will be able to do the famous tours next week. Maybe it will be limited off-piste if no fresh snow arrives. Any snowboarders might not be jumping for joy, but skiers will be fine.

@defnekasrat, "The only thing we couldn't decide is if the off-piste skiers should bring their wide skis or all-mountain skis"
The Dollies are not known for 'off-piste' (unless you have had fresh snow) - it is there if you know where to go. Go for 'all mountain'

You will not be skiing poweder off piste. I skied the last (heavy) snowfall in Jan and it was immediately heavy and sticky so can't have improved since then.
@luigi, reading online its the shady north facing slopes that are iciest (although I really suspect its actually hardpack which people are calling ice). So seems the best skiing is in the sun before it gets slushy.

Yes GEFS is showing potential for some precipitation around the 10th. Hopefully snow though it’s not looking hugely cold at 1500m.
Unless it’s very heavy or very cold New snow tends to spoil the skiing surface in the Dolomites because it doesn’t mix well with the ‘technical’ snow and takes a couple of days for the piste bashers to work it into the surface.
The settled sunny weather during January seems to have attracted skiers in numbers and if February can also deliver some good weather then they may have a season to rival last years which was I think record breaking in terms of ticket sales.
