Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Possibly the best day of the season so far, blue sky, minimum of 6 inches of new dry powdery snow, nicely cold but not so cold. BUT busy! Queues for every lift! Even the French apppeared to be skiing through their 2 hour lunch break!

boredsurfin, you missed the "fun" at Arpette first thing.
We thought a good day to go over to Les Arcs. Took the bus round to Bellecote to be first on the Arpette lift.
But, Arpette wasn't working. SAP guy said they needed to secure the area (lots of bangs) and the lift wouldn't open until 0930.
0930 came and went. We were at the front of increasingly restless and growing large crowd.
No information. I phoned SAP. Lady apologised. Said they were waiting for all clear from piste security. I suggested they might inform the crowd. Lady said good idea. Nothing happened. No apology.
Lift opened just before 10am.
At least it made for a wonderfully clear run down to Vanoise, which of course was nearly empty.
Les Arcs was busy in places. Derby was packed. So was Transarc. We went over via Villards and Carreley.
Gorgeous run down Edelweiss to find long queues for Comborciere and Saint Esprit, and discovered for the first time the wonders of Express Lanes: straight to the front of Comborciere queue. Well worth the money.
Malgovert was superb. 1600 area quiet as usual. Lots of soft snow to play in.
Journey back to La Plagne uneventful. All in all a lovely day.

Another excellent day, La Plagne Centre and around was very quiet, so we decided to find where everyone had gone - at the top of Arpette and every which way was heaving! So an early lunch snack (Croque Monsieur €5 and home made!) at Pierre Blanche by Dos Rond. At 12.30 the crowds descended on the restaurants and we went skiing. (Olly) Murs was in particularly good condition. Salla not working again does anyone know why? Presumably SAP are making a case to remove it....

So hopefully a quieter week next week

As others noted, weather and snow wise, the last two days have been superb. Yesterday, was clear and cold for the whole day, -9deg c at 2000 in the morning. Snow mainly compacted/groomed fresh on piste and 6-8” off the side on newly opened pistes, following the fall mid week. Later in the afternoon ice patches began to appear on lower slopes say below 1700m. The morning was a bit frustrating as we waited for Crozats to open and then left only to find it did opened along with Inversens, but all for the good reason to make piste safe so can’t really complain. Today was outstanding primarily as we managed to reach the glacier as it opened later at 10:30. Only the black Chlaupe was open and seeing it was already tracked by pisteurs I decided to get off mid station and board around the small chair, Chalet De Bellecote. This was a good choice as no-one else exited and I had the red largely to myself for 30mins with 6-10” of new snow that had not been groomed. Not a particularly long or steep red but plenty to enjoy. In the afternoon the temp rose to a reported +10deg c at 2000m (is that measurement error?) having been -3 in the early morning. This did soften the ice patches for the return to Les Coches. I’d confirm comments by others that the piste conditions above 1900m are comparable to earlier years, and it is only those very low areas below, say 1600m where things are thin such as the run down into Montalbert (1350m).

Would appreciate views from La Plagne/Les Arcs regulars please.
If based in Vallandry, is there much to do in terms of non-skiing stuff? For example, can you get to swimming pool, sports centre?
What other activities, apart from eating and drinking? Smile

Hi all. We're arriving into Aime 2000 on Saturday for the week. I've just been looking at the live lift / piste status and it appears there's a lot, if not all, of the reds and blacks closed on the la plagne side but many more open in Les Arcs. Has this been a regular occurrence? Do I need to consider upgrading my pass? (kids in ski school in the morning so I've just opted for a LP pass at the moment). Is the snow cover that bad that the more challenging stuff isn't open?

I was in La Plagne last week, indeed some of the lower reds were closed such as down to La Roche, some above Les Coches or in the Montalbert area (gets the sun and low). In general there are not a massive amount of reds in La Plagne so it did limit things a bit. In both areas some of the blacks were closed and those that were open were covered in massive mogels apart from after the fresh snow mid week.
We went several times to Les Arc and most of the reds were open apart from the very lowest (e.g. Red to Villaroger, blue was still ok). We were able to ski/board the full Aiguille Rouge from the top of the cable car to Villaroger last Friday. The reds above Vallandry were getting a little thin in places at the lowest sections last Friday afternoon but still good, wonder how they are by now. Apart from that they were quiet and not covered in mogels, even at 4PM.
One advantage of the full area pass is you gain access to the priority lanes in Les Arc if that is your thing.

Well, @Dom4106, I reckon you'll be fine.
Most of the resort is open. And today we found that Cretes was open (drag from top of Becoin) allowing access to Gavotte and Etroits.
Yes, a number of runs are shut, but this week is wonderfully quiet: no queues anywhere and pistes all but empty.
And the pistes around 2000 (where we were today) are all rather lovely. We even made it all the way down to Montalbert: fun all the way.
Its warm and sunny now, will stay so for a couple of days, then probably rain on Friday. But forecast is for temperature to drop over the weekend and there could be snow. Fingers crossed, think/hope for the best. You'll have a great time.

Sounds promising. Thanks for the replies. Just out of interest, if were dropping the children off in plagne centre for morning lessons 10 - 12:30, is it doable to enjoy les arcs before having to head back?

I was going to be a bit gitty but I’ll just stick with “no”. You might make it to the other side and do a couple of runs before heading back but does that class as “enjoying” les arcs? Not really…

Ok thanks. I thought as much.
Has the Inversens and Bellecote area been largely closed recently? Or have they been opening that area up now and again? Everytime I've looked (albeit not everyday) it appears to be closed - for safety reasons I'm assuming rather than snow cover???

@Dom4106, of all the times I have skied in La Plagne (many) I don't recall Inversens being closed too often. When it is, it is for avalanche risk.

@Dom4106, inversens has been open most days recently, we've been down it a few days this week. Probably only closed during heavy snowfall days.
We were up on the glacier yesterday and most of the runs were open up there. Even Rochu and Bellecote were open yesterday but I don't think they've been open too often this season.
Snow depth is above 3 metres at the glacier, not sure of depth at Inversens but plenty to keep going until the end of the season and plenty more forecast for this weekend.

Thanks @skichampcouk that's great to hear. I saw that Inversens is open on the webcam this morning but showing as closed on the resort websites interactive map...which also shows many other runs closed, I'm now guessing the interactive piste map isn't that reliable!!!!

@Dom4106, just checking now and Inversens showing open - as are most lifts and runs. I see Derochoir piste closed but that is not uncommon.

Another lovely day. Bright sun in blue sky.
Quiet pistes, no queues, gorgeous soft spring snow.
But you need to time your itinerary to get the best: to avoid the early hard stuff and miss the later slush.

For those using the Rochette Funiplagne: to miss the queues go to the Singles line at the entry nearest to Colorado lift.
You may have to stand, but its only for 8 minutes and you get straight on.

@Dom4106, Looking at the status earlier today I can see some of the un pisted blacks above 2000 are open for example - covered in mogals though last week. Also the high blacks off the left of the Bellecote glacier are open, Bellecote and Rochu, which I've never been able to board (need a combination of being open and not skied out). The reds over in Champagney can be a challenge but get soft later unless very cold.
Also looking at the weather for next week (La Plagne 2100m) and it is showing snow Friday-Monday inclusive with clearing after that and lower temperatures. So this may well mean more of the closed reds and blacks will open after a day or two of safety work. I found the lift status to be reasonably accurate but lagged reality by 30mins+ which is not a surprise. Still handy being able check when on a lift, after snow, when waiting for something to open.

We did inversens yesterday (pretty nice) and Hari kari this afternoon (really enjoyed it, very quiet), there are more runs open than I expected tbh. Going down to Montalbert this morning was a big mistake but the skiing after lunch was lovely Happy

scotski99, warm today, but temperature is meant to start falling tomorrow.
But not quite quick enough, so it will be rain.
We'll have to wait until Sunday/Monday for snow, when could get quite chilly.
It might even snow a lot . . .

Only a week to go, and lots of snow in the air! I'm mentally preparing the kids that it might be a week of whiteouts (which I'm sure they'll embrace, but they've been spoiled by blue skies and lunching outside on all our Easter trips so far).

I'm aiming on doing a supermarket stop en-route to Belle Plagne, we'd normally stop at the CarreFour in Moutiers for our 3V trips, is that still the best one or are there any nearer? And how big are the supermarkets in Belle Plagne?

Thanks @JulieAimeLeSki, 60% of the CarreFour is still pretty big. Just need to work out whether that or Moutiers works better for a stop off. There's a chance it might hammer down with snow on the saturday we arrive so it might be to get up the mountain as soon as possible.

Thanks - been used to supermarkets in Val Thorens and Avoriaz on recent family trips which, whilst not big, are big enough to carry a good range. So this will make a stop off in Moutiers/Aime even more key. So when you say convenience stores, I'm imagining a Tesco Express type size?

@Handy Turnip, they’re almost all operated under the Spar brand. Think 4-6 aisles of dry goods, small fruit and veg section and 4 or so fridges full of diary and meat etc. obviously you pay a premium up the mountain compared to down in the valley but they do stock most things. Most usually also have a fresh bakery counter as well which we tend to use for breakfast croissants etc.

Handy Turnip, agree with others about Aime Leclerc.
Decent size, will have all you want. As you driver through Aime turn right at the roundabout with Casino supermarket beside you.
Under the bridge and then left straight after a right-left wiggle.
Also adjacent are Decathlon and Weldom (DIY) plus a decent café if you need refreshment.
