UCPA holidays are about £100 up on last year.
I'm guessing advanced bookings for Xmas and New Year dried up(no pun intended ) due to recent poor starts to the season which is why it was so much cheaper this time around.

-£1=€1.10 coming
What could cause such a decline?
The answer may be in a combination of improving Eurozone fundamentals and deteriorating UK fundamentals.

On 31 Dec 08, the Pound plummeted to 1.02 against the Euro, which was its all time low. This gives an idea where we could be heading.

@stanton, from your link

"British Pound to Struggle Against Euro, Dollar on Bank of England Meet"

Yip the euro has dipped around 12% since Brexit, and it grates a bit. But the FTSE all share is up over 20%, so I'm actually feeling better off. Picking one economic fact and creating a scare around it is just too simplistic.
Anyway none knows, lets face it economics only exists to make astrology look credible (can't remember which US politician made that very prescient remark).

Perhaps there's some connection between the devaluation of the currency and the price in that currency of shares?

You know it makes sense.

@philwig, Of course there is, my point is that there are swings and roundabouts to all economic issues, and its not all doom and gloom like certain commentators would have it. When the pound climbs again the FTSE (especially the 100) will fall accordingly and on it goes.

Demand for equities is international these days. Investors will look at currency weighted prices of shares and will invest accordingly. If they can buy GBP 15% cheaper, then the entire stock market is 15% more attractive.
The price of shares is only determined by the demand for them.

A large part of it is the fact that the FTSE 100 is made up of multinational companies which make a large amount of their profits abroad. As the pound has bottomed out when they translate these profits back into sterling they'll have seen significant increases in profitability this year as a result.

Well since the season is nearly over I'm still waiting for the 1:1 Santon predicted and still want clarity on the 'a lot more expensive'. This year cost me £60 more than last, no more than a normal rise year on year and less than 3 years ago.....

Sterling up this morning on higher than expected inflation numbers. 0.25% interest rate rise coming sooner rather than later in the year I reckon.

Actually that's not correct.
First, we're "bashing" walking away from the market, which we think is bad for our country.
Second, it would make us very happy to be proved wrong, which is not something we share with the proud victors.
Finally, I'd be delighted to sell you some Sterling should I still have some.

First, we're "bashing" walking away from the market, which we think is bad for our country. Maybe you do but that's no longer up for discussion, a vote was held and you lost. Get over it. I don't particularly like the fact Tony Blair won 2 elections but he won and everyone had to accept it like it or not.
Second, it would make us very happy to be proved wrong, which is not something we share with the proud victors. people with whom I respectfully disagree constant bleating every shade of doom helps no one. They have no clearer visions into a crystal ball than I have or anyone else has.
Finally, I'd be delighted to sell you some Sterling should I still have some. I look forward to it. |
My sister lives in France and has decided to move back to the UK, she has been fretting about it for months. When I've asked her why does she feel she has to return all she can do is point to unfounded rumours. Teresa May hasn't even triggered the process and yet people are making major decisions based on little more than fear.

'Get over it.'
'people with whom I respectfully disagree constant bleating every shade of doom ...'
Sigh. People on both sides of the debate are pressing the Government to come up with an exit negotiation that doesn't leave us worse off than if we stayed. Which is reasonable, whichever way you voted in the Referendum. Many people - of both persuasions - lack confidence in the current approach, whereby we're meant to stay silent and say nothing, and then have no say in the deal that we end up with in 24 months time. Knowing politicians, if there's no pressure on them, then the worry is that they'll either roll over and agree to anything or fold their arms and say a deal wasn't possible. call this bleating if you want, I call it taking back control.
