shaping up to be a very nasty start to the season
actually, lower s. facing slopes might be OK, as they have no snow at the moment. Small mercies...

Status some info (not complete)
Few more lifts open in Lech. Madloch is closed
Rendltaffahrt (Valley run) is still officially closed. Gampberg chair is open.
Warth Schrocken very limted only two lifts running.
Sonnenkopf closed opens 22nd for Foot Passengers only
St Anton Schongraben closed. |
Rendl Talabfahrt was officially open today, and looked to be pisting down from Riffel I, so I guess that will be opening soon. Was surprised at the conditions on the home run, expecting to see plenty of stones about but there were very few, and barely any icy patches. Nice conditions up on the slopes considering, better than last year IMHO and although there is ice around, the pistes aren't as icy as I remember them being this time last year.

@sah, A poo-poo day in the mountains is better than a good day in the UK! I'm not bothered about the weather I think all this micro-analysis is actually quite funny, it'll be what it'll be, end of!

Not true.
The two previous seasons were much worse. This season the upper slopes have excellent cover & it is possible to ski to to town .

Still very changeable conditions around the 28th.
Looks as if we will get a white Xmas, light snow 25/26th Dec maybe rain or sleet in town.

I see flurries in the forecast but not much more for the week of the 26th. Still, that's a week out. Any chance those could intensify? There's talk -- though highly speculative -- of a potential storm sweeping across the Atlantic.
I arrive on 12/27 from the US with a group of American friends. Convinced them skiing in the Arlberg is better than anything we've got stateside -- ahhhh!

I can understand why you might want to head to Piedmont, but why anyone would want to go to Sauze or Sestriere is beyond me. If you're going to that area head to Alagna, Champoluc or Gressoney.

Well I always wanted to ski in Alagna / Champoluc etc but don't know how good it would be for the lady and generally for a Christmas / NY break. I'll have a look. I've skied in the Milky Way and liked it (though based at the other end, in Montgenevre).
My main option is still to stay in St Anton and pray to Ullr / do a snow dance. What's on the way looks cosmetic, which is still good, I just hope it doesn't fizzle out.

@sah, that's a stupid comment! If we are just discussing snow conditions and nothing else then Milky Way will be far better than Monterosa or St Anton. Monterosa is a nice area on-piste but primarily interesting for the off-piste skiing a bit like St Anton but you ain't getting that at the moment. If you want to ski off-piste then the Milky Way (Sauze) may be one of the available options (although not perhaps the best).

It could happen... Sadly not likely in the next few days though. My experience is that epic seasons tend to start of with a lot of snow and then it just keeps going. I think 2012/13 was the last epic season. That doesn't make the other seasons 'bad', just not extreme.

Thanks! Will keep an eye on weather patterns but am expecting to ski on pistes only.
Unfortunately the Weisse Ring is impossible at this time. Anyone know how much skiing can be done in Lech-Zurs at the moment? Staying in St. Anton but was planning to venture over on some of the days.

To be sure the Arlberg is a blast when they have good cover and fresh snow. Can't beat the apres scene in Austria. Not much comes even close in the USA to the food, bubbly, and brews. But this year, and into 2017 looks just too good Stateside to spend the hours and the jet lag dealing with Europe. I hope Alps, and environs get a good dose of snow and soon.

@ArlbergMeister, - skied in Lech/Zurs/St Anton last week. As of Sunday, one run on seekopf side, and 3 on Hexenboden side open. Muggengrat opened at weekend, but didn't have chance to ski the run - need to walk along the road to get back to Zurs. Ski route open from Trittkopfbahn 1 to Zurs (involves max 5 mins walk).
Worth going to Zurs just for the ride on the new lift!
Buses to Lech from Zurs run every 15 minutes. Ruffikopf only open for foot passengers and
link to Warth closed. More skiing and better conditions in Lech than Zurs last week, but St Anton undoubtedly the best.

I might be getting my years mixed up, but didn't it start going crazy in Dec? Anyway, I'm just rambling, there's no reason not to get an epic season starting in January, I just have this picture in my mind of missing out from the start of Dec I guess. Whatever the weather I'm sure it's better to be out there than it is here to be in the UK

@red 27, just like April skiing everyone should learn on narrow slopes & learn narrow tight turns at a contolled speed.
You should try it end of the season April/May on slick morning blue ice on whats is left of Kandahar!!
