I'm currently in Mottaret. Last 2 days have had some rain and some snow. SL floating anywhere from 1400m to 2000m. Lots of poor visibility. Lots of strong wind high up. Some upper links and lifts closing. Today woke up to rain, but temps are falling and this now turning to snow. Skiing itself is very good especially when you can actually see the ground. Snow quality great above 2200m. Some small off piste possibilities were found but being very cautious with slope angle and visibility difficulties. Lots of blasting this morning. Suspect poor vis, heavy snow and wind might be the theme for the rest of the week.

@letsgetpiste, I'll try to not get carried away and ski everything that is vaguely white!
I'll also try to remember to NOT be selfish, and post up some reports. I didn't over Christmas as other people were doing a far better job of it.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Then-be-sunny-23rd-to-30th-Jan!

The utter worst out there this morning in Les Men. Dumping cubic tonnes of the wettest snow imaginable, visibility negligible, all the links closed due to avalanche risk and everybody on the five or six pistes that are open.
Decided to cut my losses already and in a bar, commencing to boshing all the vin.
Forecast for it to improve starting tomorrow, which would be welcome...

Done for today. As expected very high winds closed all upper lifts and therefore all 3V links. SL line gradually got lower during the day. All rain gradually became snow. Above around say 2100m we had quite a lot of powder. Particularly above Mottaret, not so much above Merbel centre. Occasional improvements allow the side stashes of powder to be exploited. Much lower temps now, so if the big snowfall happens this evening and tonight it will be quality stuff at all levels. Praying for a drop in the wind to allow full exploitation to commence !

The black and yellow barrier is stopping you skiing off a "cliff" if I remember rightly. Not really a cliff, but you know what I mean, somewhere you really don't want to be going.

Skied every type of snow known to man in Meribel today - some lovely powder at the side of the runs at altitude through to puddle skiing and slush bumps at 1400m. By our last couple of runs the slush was starting to crisp up under a cover of fresh snow.
Managed to stay out all day and keep more or less dry by riding mainly gondolas - though got a good dousing on the chair back up from Meribel Village early doors this am.
The wind was ferocious in some exposed spots - felt like a wind-blasted day on Cairngorm at times...
All in all not a bad day out but a bit challenging in places.

Looks to be a lot of areas closed due to wind today. Common occurrence in Val Thorens?

@Cymro66, chalet chocolat is in a really good position, walk to the bubble isn't too difficult in the morning and after apres it's all down hill, and you can stop off in the tiger for another if the needs must

@letsgetpiste, @Peter S, Jeez guys a little PMA (positive mental attitude) wouldn't go astray here. I'll be in VT on the 30th and I know it's going to be fantastic

A lot of the areas in the 3V are closed today for Avalanche blasting as well as high winds. The roads between Les Menuires and VT and between St Jean and Fontaine (much lower in the valley) have been closed for a couple of hours today to make them safe from avalanches. There's still plenty of skiing in the 3V and the snow is amazing. They don't close the lifts lightly ( they know they will come in for criticism) but safety comes first. The lifties and pisteurs have spent weeks shovelling snow onto the piste now they're having to cope with excess. But as one of them said today "c'est normale c'est l'hiver, on n'est pas à la plage!" @BAJJ, I've got a feeling you may have the week of the season!

We're flying out on the 23rd, for a week in VT. It WILL be perfect, bluebird sky, skiing all week.
There; enough PMA for you? Or should I PMSL for being so daft?

Upper lifts shut as expected today. But skiing was epic. Fresh powder to be found in oodles especially good on all accessible faces above Meribel on Saulire side. Deep and quite light. Managed to ski off piste pretty much all day. Visibility was much much better today making that all possible. Wind is due to be much lighter tomorrow and some sun might even show. Bet those links start opening (hope).

Val Thorens, snowing for the past 3 days. Pistes are packed and bumpy with very low visibility, clouds rolling through so may improve for a few minutes but generally returning to only a few metres.
Reds generally have people stranded on moguls that they haven't seen, nothing challenging in terms of gradient open. All links closed and high winds closing many top lifts. Piste conditions are good, power cover on a solid base. That fresh snow crunch under the skis, although that creates soft invisible mogul's on any kind of pitch. Colder today

Not ventured "off piste" into proper powder. Any recommendations in La tania for Ski schools who would do such lessons or assess for ability to do 'powder'?

IMO your better off going through late in the day, than going through early, last year we drove through the night with the idea of arriving early, but hit the most horrendous traffic jams around Chambery, two previous years we left the Tunnel around 7.30 heading up the hill early Saturday evening and had no delays. Dont know which French area is on holiday that which which has some bearing on how much and where the traffic is coming from ... Worth checking.

Hi, anyone with local knowledge recommend any ski schools, particular instructors, from 1850 please? Group lessons for an early intermediate skier, adult, mornings.

I don't know any specific instructors there anymore but you can't go far wrong with New Generation.

after the mess my wife had last week with new gen, I don't think I can recommend them again.
Group billed as "I am confident snowploughing on green and blue runs and my skis are sometimes parallel towards the end of the turn." yet they were doing runs around troika the beginner area, rather than off skiing green and blues.
She gets bumped up to next level and they were skiing steeper blues and reds, major difference in ability.
Next day they start messing with start times late morning instead of first thing, obviously an issue if you are meeting a child at the end of their lesson.
Didn't bother with the rest of the week...
If only "you are not allowed to teach your wife to ski" wasn't one of the ten commandments...

@intermediate, Supreme Ski were excellent last year, also tried NewGen and they were fine but we preferred the lessons with Supreme. They also have a better meeting point location, you don't have to go down and round through the tunnel. Not a major thing but means you and kids don't then have to lug skis back up and over the road to the lifts!
