@Sitter, I imagine. Taps is my regular apres haunt and I usually guide my mates up mattun down 21 to it to avoid the worse of misery valley. I've never got on with MW. Hope it's sorted for this weekend.
What's Basecamp like for Apres this days? |
Basecamp seems popular, or at least it has done the last couple of seasons, not sure bout this year. It always lacked the gemütlichkeit for me though; I tend to head to s'Graibli if I'm stopping off on the slopes. Agree with you about Mooserwirt, it's been twenty years since I darkened the doors there and I'll be happy to make it another 20. (yeah, I was a hipster, I used to go the Moos before it was cool )

Yup. Apparently Mario Matt has had several words with the relevant people about it, |
He bought his own Snowmaking cannon for this season (not a cheap undertaking) it was set up by the Power Pylon.
Best way to KK & Tapps when the Piste a are green. Is to get off the piste at the KaminStube and just walk up the road. Either leave your gear in the racks at the KaminStube & pickup later or haul it up to the Tapps/KK.
Food in KK is probably the best on the mountain this season , excellent choice, large portions & good value. Goulash has to be one of the best in Tirol !!! Checkout the monster Tomahawk Steak (for two) .
RE Mooserwirt.
This season they are not doing any Tradtional Austrian Food on the Main Course Menu which is a real shame/sellout to the Burger & Fries Townies.

@sah, haha, doesn't you're beard get all frosty? I liken MW to office Xmas parties or New Year; full of amateur drinkers who go there because they think they should and are all trying too hard to have a good time. I like Griabli, on a sunny afternoon it's great fun to watch the idiots over at MW. Taps has the right compromise vibe for me, and you rarely go wrong with following the seasonnaires.

Looks like Schindler was good today (though I note everyone was too scared to ski the best couloir on the left - more filled in now than the last time I skied it!).

Yeah, but that's comparing prices from Dec to Jan which isn't like-for-like, they should be comparing Jan 2016 with Jan 2015 to get an accurate view.
If they are hiking prices like that then I look forward to the authorities investigating another cartel.

Our hotel is currently advertising, for this weekend, at ~50% more than we paid in when booked in November. I got an early bird discount but that only accounts for a small portion.

I just can't imagine eating in the KK... Surely just as you're about to tuck into that (no doubt delicious) Goulash, someone's ski boot will plonk into it as 'Livin on a Prayer' starts up for the 17th time?

@red 27,
I am not sure when the lastvtime you visited the KK?
Since MM took it over it has completely changed. Complete refurb.
There is only very low background music during the lunchtime menu (upto 14.00 i think) then they have a shortened menu for the redt of the day.
Apres music starts 14.45: 15;00 until late.Music has changed also mix of everything but more to club sounds as evening drifts on

@elj221c, not sure about KK, but Griabli was still pretty smokey last season. They'll catch up with the rest of Europe one day. I hope.

@sah, Griabli is non-smoking inside, but they do allow smoking outside on terrace (like folk do here in UK), never had issues in there.
Personally I hate smoking inside and have only come across it 3x in recent times, once at Murmel in Stuben, Willis in Stuben and Mondschein in Nasserein (all old fashioned locals type places). The old conservatory thing at Gampen used to be smoky but that's gone now. We were sat inside last week on the new terrace at new Gampen our table right on the window line, the windows were pulled back and an old woman was smoking outside 2m away and it was blowing in our direction......I told her politely in German it was not good, she took no immediate notice but we gave her dirty looks for a while and she left!!

Hmm, maybe I'm out of date, your knowledge is more up to date than mine. Good to hear anyway!
Willis is pretty bad from the smoke perspective, Murmel in Stuben is not too bad in the non smoking room, but smoke does drift through. Not been in the Mondschein for years... for exactly this reason! The Mondschein hotel bar in Stuben is also quite bad.

@sah, You can still smoke at the Bar in the HospizAlm in St Christoph even while people are eating at the bar and regular seated just behind !

Food is average, prices are high, it's very busy, service with an attitude (but maybe that's just me), better places nearby.

@Dr John, Hospiz Alm is not the worst place, I just don't think it lives up to it's reputation.
In St Christoph I really like the hotel Maiensee right by the lift. Highly recommend booking. I think the Arlberghohe also has a good reputation but I've never eaten there.

@sah, +1 for Maiensee, I'm also not a huge fan of Hospizalm (apart from the slide to the WC's), new place on the right just built looks awesome, reckon that'll become the place to go in future!

HopizAlm is the fastest most expensive Austrian McDonalds joint in Arlberg and folk fall for it all the time. The main lunch menu (not a la carte) is all warmed up boil in a bag food..presented in attracive surroundings. you should go in the kitchen there and your be amazed how the food is prepared.out of the truck into he fryer!
Hospiz Alm is primarily known for its wine collection & everything is available to buy & go with your fastfood or A la carte.
Just amazes me to see folk buying drinking fine €100+ wine to go with there ripoff price Lasagne out of the factory or Schnitzel & French Fries out of the Fritteur, even the Goulash soup comes out of a Tincan , LOL !

@stanton, that's no different to many other places in the Alps, not to mention some well regarded London restaurants. Not saying it's correct, but the HozpizAlm isn't the only culprit.
Anyway not an issue cos we're going full-fat a la carte (cellar tour hopefully)
