@Davina Goldballs, at least you now admit that the Ski Club’s legal costs were met by their insurers. Anyway, there have only been two safety related court cases, one was thrown out by the judge and the other ended in a not guilty verdict. Of course you refuse to actually report the facts you don’t like because they don’t suit your agenda.
Having been an abject failure at just about everything you’ve tried to do, I don’t think you’re in much of a position to scold the Ski Club over its performance. You’re a typical Monday morning quarterback and that’s all you’ll ever be.

Who is this "we" you speak of? It appears to be the SCGB. You are not a part of this organisation in any shape or form. Please cease and desist from identifying yourself, for whatever warped reason you may have, with our club which you criticise and demean at every turn.
I am currently having trouble in deciding who is worst on social media - you or POTUS 😩😩😩

Breaking News ... that broke just before the weekend ... concerning the upcoming Telegraph Ski and Snowboard Festival ...
"Sunset Sons to headline the Ski Club of Great Britain Stage"
https://www.skiclub.co.uk/news/ski-club-news/2018/08/sunset-sons-to-headline-the-ski-club-of-great-britain-stage
I'm not aware of the SCGB previously sponsoring a live music event.
In terms of comparable audiences/demographics, the Club continues to finance 'Line-S' - its 'student brand' ...

... which appears to be forging ahead and into the 2018-9 ski season ...

With over 20,000 members, we are the the largest student snowsports club in the UK.
Proudly part of the Ski Club of Great Britain |
Line-S kicked of in the spring of 2015 and in the three years since has always - to my knowledge - claimed "over 20,000 members". When the "20,000" achieve graduation and move on in life from being students remains to be seen. Presumably, at some point, they are replaced by another 20,000. Or more!

Gerry and Scrumpy, I shall respond to your kind comments later in the week. You draw a flattering comparison with myself and the 45th President of the United States, Donald John Trump ...
... but I should courteously point out that your name, and his name, share no fewer than 4 letters ...

Ah ! We are pretending to have a sense of humour now are we ?
Similarly your chosen name has 5 letters in common with a former British politician, Ed, who has now become a TV "court jester" with his appearances on Strictly Come Dancing and his recent show "Balls to America" as the critics renamed it. At least he would not find any comparison with current POTUS flattering.

THE 2018 AGM
The Ski Club of GB 2018 annual general meeting will be held on 15 November, beginning and ending at midnight ... apparently ... at an unknown location (at least at the time of writing, taking words and numbers in strictly literal terms).
No doubt SCGB members will be furnished with the essential details in due course!

Annual General Meeting
Date 15 November 2018
Start time 00:00
End time 00:00
Location TBC |
SCGB EX-CLUBHOUSE 118 EATON SQUARE (1953-97)
As is known, this very prestigiously located property, which the Ski Club vacated in an unmodernised condition before buying the freehold of the Wimbledon 'White House' (an HQ which the SCGB has also now vacated after 20 years), carried a 75-year lease expiring in 2024. The Club emerged from Eaton Square with net proceeds of £1.3 million. And ... 2 decades later ... banked £3.8 million from the White House sale. That money was then invested last year (2017) via brokers, as reported at the 2017 AGM.
The purchaser of the White House was an offshore company called 'Caligula Ltd' ...
http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=94856&start=4440#2994060
But ... back to 118 Eaton Square for a moment. It's known that the building emerged in Russian hands*, and was subjected to a full modernisation at great expense. Much more recently the building has been enmeshed in scaffolding again for an even more extensive regeneration. A company called PDSI Construction Consultants reports that "£25 - £50m" is being spent on the place ...

All told, one can only deduce that well over £120 million has been invested in the purchase and renovation of 118 Eaton Square, after the original 1997 SCGB sale.
AND NOW ...
The SCGB is currently located, on a rental basis, at ...
... with the DVLA as co-tenants:

Yes ... apologies for the fake news. I did spot the error (a couple of minutes after posting it) but the esteemed moderateurs of slushNuts only allow me one posting per 24 hours ... so editing/correcting is not possible.
Here's another piece of fake news ...
Employees of the DVLA were seen vacating Connect House in December 2013, in a beaten-up Ford Cortina ... heading for the M4 and Swansea ... but the car had a ski rack on top. I am trying to establish if the vehicle had a tax disc.

UPDATES
1. 'SKI PUB OF GREAT BRITAIN'
Latest from the building site that is the upcoming White Haus on Farringdon Street, where the (very) long-awaited renaissance of the Ski Club of Great Britain will be toasted. Around 6 more weeks to get thirsty and peckish. Interestingly they're playing a teaser with the info (even in terms of the location) ...
https://www.facebook.com/thewhitehausldn
One more floor than anticipated: https://www.facebook.com/pg/thewhitehausldn/about/?ref=page_internal
... despite the fact that the exact address was revealed, here, on 25 July ...
https://www.facebook.com/notes/wtf-ski-club/ski-pub-of-great-britain-named-located-/1379496742153209/
... although the number on Farringdon Street has been revised from No.20 to No.17, perhaps to distinguish it from the new office block that's actually the structure immediately above it.
There does seem to be a strong probability that the White Haus will be open by the date of the SCGB AGM on 15 November ... but where will the meeting be held?
2. WHO'S RUNNING THE REPS?
James Cove, ex-SCGB director and representative, has published this story on PlanetSki regarding the sudden departure - today - of the Club's 'Head of On Snow Services' Jonny Cassidy. The 'on snow services' are predominantly the team of 'leaders' (formerly 'reps') and the SCGB holiday programmes 'Freshtracks' and 'Mountain Tracks'.
https://planetski.eu/news/10852
Jonny Cassidy's rapidly executed exit follows the move (last October) of Simon Henwood, after 15 years service in various senior and comparable roles at the club ... after 15 years.
https://www.skiclub.co.uk/news/ski-club-news/2017/10/simon-henwood-leaves-the-ski-club-after-15-years
The Club's CEO Darren Neylon took over last March ...
https://www.facebook.com/notes/wtf-ski-club/a-new-ceo-for-the-ski-club-of-gb/1195459850556900/
... and is clearly making strategic changes. Exactly what emerges as a membership package - for the future - remains to be seen, and the Club's 2018 annual report is awaited with interest, especially in terms of 'following the money'. There is also ongoing intrigue as to the SCGB's true membership numbers ...
3. IS MEMBERSHIP HEADING UPWARDS OR DOWNWARDS?
Revisiting last month's discussions ...
https://www.facebook.com/notes/wtf-ski-club/ski-club-of-gb-revises-its-membership-upwards-and-downwards/1392561780846705/
http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=94856&start=5040#3262022
Given those recent statements, will the SCGB's total membership be declared in the region of ...
a. 27,000?
b. 30,000?
c. Some figure south of 27,000?

The aim is revenge. We are talking about someone who thinks his birthright included being made the editor of Ski & Board. This ‘right’ was denied him by a Ski Club Council made up of reps. He ended up being kicked out of the Club by a council made up mostly of Leaders and he now harbours a searing hatred towards the Club in general.
But all that hate towards the Ski Club is as nothing compared to his hatred of admin. I genuinely feel sorry for him as I think he needs help.

THE 2018 AGM: LOCATION, DATE, TIME
The Ski Club of GB has now located a venue for its AGM (Thur 15 Nov, 18.00): the '58VE' (58 Victoria Embankment) building that looks over the River Thames, about 8 mins walk (0.4 miles) from the White Haus ... where, one assumes, apres-AGM festivities will take place. The 'alpine-themed gastropub' should have been open for about a week at that point ...

A ski themed pub is for Christmas and not for life (unlike dogs). However I wish them luck, predict it'll be fairly short lived as a theme, but as it is in my bailiwick I will be giving it a go. I like beer, I drink a lot of beer, I've always liked beer, I still like beer, do you like beer? I just hope they go the extra mile and have some of the alpine brews we are used to - especially the Austrian ones. Otherwise it's the 300 year old Hoop & Grapes opposite for me.
Ghost town at the weekends, that's the other issue for that part of town, even after the Elizabeth Line starts.
Oh, and they should sack their graphics department. Awful.

THE SKI CLUB OF GB'S 'LINE-S':
DOES THE 'S' STAND FOR 'STATISTICS' ?
Soft-launched in the spring of 2015 - https://www.line-s.co.uk/ - the student section of the SCGB quickly claimed impressive numbers. I reported on SKI.HUB a year later:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/SKI.HUB/permalink/176813630139798/
Quote: |
HOW DID THE SCGB "SECURE" 15,000 NEW MEMBERS?
The clue to the Ski Club of Great Britain's extraordinary news yesterday - that it has "secured" 15,000 new student members via a student travel company - lies in the Club's 2015 annual report.
SCGB chairman Rob Crowder informed his membership that "we are targeting the university market to begin engagement with young people. We have created a new brand “Line-S” and are working in the first year exclusively with Wasteland Ski to roll this out to their circa 15,000 clients. In future years we will refine the offering and work with other tour operators also specialising in the university market."
So the 15,000 clients of Wasteland Ski have provided the SCGB with 15,000 new members. Which begs the obvious question - given a 100% success in recruitment - are these students paying any subscriptions, or are they on a freebie?
The expansion in numbers is enormous. The most recent ABC circulation certificate (2014) for the SCGB's membership magazine Ski+Board gives a figure of 15,903 for copies sent to members' households. So, in comparative terms, the SCGB's declared membership has doubled. |
The membership numbers in 2018 are 33% greater:
https://www.line-s.co.uk/about/
Quote: |
Line-S is an online student community with over 20,000 members. |
... and these 20,000 members are ...
https://www.line-s.co.uk/
Quote: |
Proudly part of the Ski Club of Great Britain |
If the 20,000 are "proudly part of the Ski Club of Great Britain" where do their numbers sit within the declared membership numbers of the SCGB overall? In August the SCGB claimed - simultaneously - two different membership totals for the Club: "over 30,000" and "around 27,000", as reported on WTF Ski Club:
https://www.facebook.com/notes/wtf-ski-club/ski-club-of-gb-revises-its-membership-upwards-and-downwards/1392561780846705/
Since it's now 3.5 years since Line-S launched, these questions might seem reasonable:
- Do Line-S members pay anything? Have they ever paid anything?
- If Line-S members are "proudly part of the Ski Club of Great Britain", do they receive SCGB membership cards, can they attend the AGM of the Club (and vote there?). Do they co-own the Club?
- Are the original 15,000 members of Line-S, declared in 2015-6, still part of the SCGB? If they were undergraduates, they have presumably now graduated.
- How many of the 15,000/20,000 Line-S members have become full-subscription-paying members of the SCGB?
That's probably enough questions for now, but it would be interesting to know of the prospects of Line-S - within the general structure of the SCGB - as the 2018-9 season looms ahead.
