@Chris Brookes, it’s certainly been a glorious October. I think we only lost 2 days to rain all month. A bit cooler in the coming days, but still predominantly dry by the looks of things.

It is happening tomorrow. I guess it will feel very weird tomorrow when you look around you while skiing/snowboarding and just see rock around you and not snow!!

Hi folks, have been lurking on this thread as have booked a trip for 14 - 21st Dec staying in Wengen. So good to see the weather going in the right direction @Chris Brookes
A couple of questions if I may of the cognoscenti here:
1. Airport transfer
We're flying in to Basel as I got reasonably priced Easyjet flights. I have been looking at train travel but know they annoyingly don't do that Swiss Transfer scheme anymore. I've found that I can get trains much cheaper by buying a ticket from Freiburg that goes through Basel but you have to book for a specific train ... I'm worried that if the flight is delayed and we miss our booked train I've got to fork out for another entire set of train tickets. Do you know if the Swiss are very strict on that if you try to get a later train the same day? My guess is they probably would be.
2. Christmas markets
My wife is a non skier and is keen to get to see some Xmassy stuff, do you know if there are any Christmas markets in or near Wengen, Grindelwald & Murren? My googling suggests not, or one in Grindelwald but a one day affair on 30th Nov only. Likewise anything else good and Christmassy that's on in the area that week?
This will be our second time to Wengen, so do know it a bit, but first visit was about 15 years ago!
Thanks and back to snow dancing

@Rowlski, Swiss Railways dropped the Transfer ticket a few years back. Ever since I've used the Saver Day Pass. It goes on sale 6 months before the date of travel, and if you buy it early enough it actually works out a bit cheaper than the old transfer ticket. Without a half fare travel card (which most Brits won't have) it costs from 52CHF but gets more expensive the closer you get to the date of travel. It's valid for the entire swiss rail network and includes some local connecting bus links, so covers you for the bus from Basel airport to Basel main train station then from there all the way to Wengen. It's also valid all day so gives you total flexibility on what time train service you get. So buying two saver day passes for your outbound and return days can cost you as little as 104CHF total, which from memory is a bit less than the old transfer ticket.

@Rowlski, there will probably be a nativity play in the church in Wengen while you're there. We always go.

Thanks @Alastair Pink, that is useful definitely in terms of the flexibility though having priced it up (possibly because I've left it too late) its still fairly pricey! In fact almost double the price of buying the journey with a start station of Freiburg!!
I think I'm going to go for the German train ticket option but leave a fair bit of time between flight arrival and train as it's roughly £200 difference (4 of us with 16 year old son unfortunately counting as adult on pricing now )

Thanks @telford_mike, myself and the wife maybe but my kids would heartily moan if we said we were taking them to a nativity play
So there's not much else Christmassy going on? I saw there's a gluhwein day and stalls on in the centre of Wengen but sadly not till late afternoon the day we depart! Sods law.

@Rowlski, that's right unfortunately, the gluhwein day used to be called 'village opening' - it marks the start of the winter season.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I'm hoping there's enough snow for at least a good few open slopes for the week before the start of the winter season celebrations!
