Here's a tourist question - is it worth avoiding Lech/Zuers that day, or is it worth planning to be there to see it?

So, when he's skiing over what seems to be fairly recent wet slides on a S. facing slope... what is he thinking? If it were me (and not knowing the details for that day) I might have turned back at some point... just sayin'.

I wanted to ski the Weisse Ring one day a few seasons ago and caught the bus from Raus to Zurs, not realising the event was on. I could not ski from Zurs to Lech because they had closed off some of the lifts for the event. For some reason they were running a bit late so the connection was still not open at mid-day.
In retrospect it might have been better going to Lech and starting the circuit from there, once the racers had all left, as hopefully the lifts would reopen progressively afterwards.

Today, we spent the wholel day skiing off Stuben chairs in good deep powder!
Some drift jumping and some trees, but mostly just GREAT!
What an area!
Did I mention that yesterday we jumped over the road tunnel between St Anton and Zurs? Great fun!
St Anton off-piste is limitless.
Now to get some food and drink!
Ciao,
Bob

In St Anton at the moment and a very loud air raid siren went off last night. What's it for? Seems old school.

Very nice video. I've skied St Anton more times than I can remember over the years and I've skied snow like that once. These guys turn up and hit 50cm of blower smoke on their first day!

alex99,
no snow chains if you got winter tyres (Compulsory). its best to drive through the tunnel as its snowing and settling on the Pass right. now & it is always subject to black ice after
the sun goes down. I hope you have a confirmed parking spot?
Its easier, safer & more reliable to take yhe train from Zurich.

Most (all?) Austrian towns have a loud siren like that, to warn of problems at one of the neighbouring countries' nuclear power plants. Normally tested on Saturdays though, so maybe it gets used for other things too (calling the firemen as stanton says above, maybe).

report for today: Maas and Riffel chairs, far to skier's left... fields of 50cm powder and no liumit! But the long walk up to the chair seems to put some people off!
Tomorrow the Valluga North Face couloir is beckoning!

I was really impressed with St Anton!
Boris, our guide, took us to deep powder every day for the entire week! Twice the Valluga north face, and so many other pitches I can't remember the names! And there was so much more to do, it would take an entire season to do all there is to do, and maybe even that wouldn't be enough!
Ciao,
Bob

gratefulfrog, Great to hear your feedback, Valluga Nord is on our list for 2 weeks time, plenty of snow on it, any rocks or is it fully covered? Also looking to do the drop over the tunnel roof this time down to Stuben snow permitting. Have skied St Anton probably 40+ weeks now stopped counting, and havent even scratched the surface, keep finding so much to go at. 16 days planned for Feb March, mildly giddy!
Enjoy La Grave, never been but its on the list.

Plenty of snow on the Valluga last week. We did the NW couloir last Sunday (week) and the N couloir Friday. Both had 50+cm of powder.
The knife-edge traverse to get to the NW couloir had some rocks and was a bit delicate, but not too bad. We didn't rope up. Anyway it's only about 20m traverse before the 1st turn into the powder. After that it was a smooth ride to the bottom. Avalanche risk there seemed low that day.
The N couloir had what felt like a wind-slab, or other fragile layer underlying the powder at the top, so we were one-on-the-pitch at a time for the upper section. There was plenty of great powder all the way to the walk-out with no rocks to speak of. Friday, we were the 1st to ski it so we all had 1st tracks!
I guess you know that they won't let you on the cable car up to the Valluga unless a mountain-guide is leading your group?
The tunnel jumping was fine, right into deep powder, but that was nearly a week ago now, so who can say what it's like now.
Enjoy it!
Ciao,
Bob

Out of interest, where is this? I'm guess over the gallery on the Zuers road just south of the Flexen pass, or is it the gallery on the road just above St Anton? Which run leads to it and where do you ski to?
