sarah, I think the boundary is as you cross Morzine and head up to Super Morzine. You certainly need a PDS pass if you want both Morzine/Les Gets and Pre La Joux.

Just back from six days in Les Gets - bit of activity on the building front, some things that we thought would be further along are not and others have whizzed up. Roads closed all over the place and one way signs up with drivers totally ignoring them, so what is new there! The bottom of the red egg and Chavannes express lifts have been having quite a bit of work - still a way to go though, and seemingly masses still to do on the new cable car at Prodains - we looked at the top part in Avoriaz and the bottom at Prodains. Dead as a dodo on Saturday - I would have thought that with a bit of weekend working they could have got further along - but I suppose it is France. Building sites are a complete tip - let's hope they clear up all the stuff lying around before the snow covers them up!
We also went and looked at the new Troncs lift - still quite a bit to do there too.
Good supper on arrival on Thursday night in the Optraken - lovely salads and pizza.
We kind of wondered why we had chosen to go now - but having turned on the hot water on arrival and nipped out for supper we came back to a rather wet garage and one of the water tanks was leaking - so we had a plumber's visit on Friday - thank goodness it was us and not visitors! OH went to get a book off a bookshelf and the shelf nearly came down - rather too many books on it - so another job to do.
Lovely EDF switched the power off in our road yesterday morning for four hours - not a mention that it was going to happen - cue - out for coffee and lunch.
Made various enquiries about our lift passes - both PDS season for us, and Les Gets/Morzine seasons for our daughter and SIL who will be with us most of January - and having got fed up last week when we found we were only going to get 10% discount for being seniors - OH had a look at last year's prices and discovered that was what we had then too.
Hired a small VW from GVA called an Up - and we were charged 8 Swiss Francs a day for the winter tyres - its all in the small print and OH was aware when he made the booking.
Came back Easyjet with reserved seating - we didn't pay to book anything in particular so were allocated seats in row 20 - seemed fine - they boarded speedy boarding and people with children and then the rest of us just seemed to form a very orderly queue with no pushing or shoving.

Pamski,
That's lovely,
Thank you

Thanks for the update Pamski, the difference I think between France and Switzerland is that in France, work proceeds apace for four hours a day and four days a week, whereas in Switzerland it never actually starts but there are lots of Cantonal referenda and communal meetings to create the illusion of progress

Pamski, so was I right about the mini escalator at bottom of Les Oeufs Rouges?

Hey all, I'll be out repping with Crystal in Morzine this season, so will hopefully be able to add a little extra input in to this thread as the season progresses. Looking forward to meeting other snowheads out there!

I'm as guilty as the next guy of posting stuff various on the weather thread so thought I'd breath a bit of life into this one! And we were languishing on page 6 - can't be having that.
Anyone skiing next weekend? I'll be out from Thursday on kitchen fitting duty but expect to manage a ski Saturday/Sunday.
As I understand it the Chatel- Avoriaz link is unlikely to be open so it's one or the other but I would be happy to drive round to meet up.

Gotta be a snow shoe walk or two during the week, with all this fresh stuff to plod along through. Small works are nearly done so a little US time is called for before the hordes arrive.

Snow looking good ... if there were any decent evening flights left from the sticks, I would have been severely tempted this weekend. As it is, would need to fly mid-Friday, and can't really take the time off

LGS posted this on Facebook earlier:
"Les Gets Tourist Office will make a decision on Wed 5th regarding early opening of local ski lifts. With all the snow forecast for the next few days it's highly likely they'll partially open the resort 2 weeks ahead of schedule! Watch this space for more information."

Pipski it is not super busy at present but I think French apartment owners often spend Christmas at home and then arrive before New Year. Quite a lot of Dutch and Brits around.
If the colder weather arrives with some fresh snow that will make a difference - low down is slushy.
There's a bit more activity on the PDS weather thread!

Is the new Prodains lift still on track for 16 Feb opening? I think we'll tend to go up from Super Morzine or Ardent this year but we'll probably be coming down that way as the kids' ski school is in Avoriaz.
And does anyone know of anybody who'd be up for guiding some "slack country" touring for a half day or two at half-term? New skis have touring bindings and skins so would quite like to get slightly off the beaten track whilst the kids are at school.

Has anyone skied over at St Jean d'Aulps in the last few days?
Any other suggestions near Morzine which might be quieter than Morzine/Avoriaz/Chatel?
Thanks

THis sounds interesting ive got touring bindings and skins and Ive done a few tentative randonee triups for 2 hours or so up but not had great snow down. I would like to hook up with a PDS randonee guru.

Mont Chery rocks! Skied straight onto every lift today, and the uplift is so limited the runs can't get busy. Should anyone object to me letting the cat out of the bag, remember it's not so long ago that Sagets were considering abandoning the area all together for lack of use - so I'm happy to share with a few more discerning snowheads if it helps secure its future!

Did great randonee trip up behind chapelle yesterday but pretty sketchy ski down with maggie the snow Lab. Good day in avoriaz and champousin today (without maggie). Some beers in L'avalanche and crepe in nearby creperie (with Maggie). Perfect

We were on the Mt Chery side today - on the gondola at 9 along with local ski clubs who were really only racing on the usual places. No queues anywhere other than when Chery Nord stopped for a bit, and hardly much of what one could call a queue even then.

sarah, not sure where you are based but if you get to La Chapelle and head up towards Col du Braitaz (N side of the valley) it is often less busy (you can get there via Petit Chatel/Barbossine lift via Torgon as well but the parking there is very restricted).
Caution: if it does get busy it can be frustrating as there are only two slowish chairs.
Also you can ski over to Torgon which has a couple of nice runs

We were in La Chapelle on Saturday morning and it wasn't too bad - there was a delay on one of the drags up from Torgon but once fixed (10 minutes standing around) there were no queues.
The restaurant at the Col du Braitaz produces a particularly fine range of Gateaux to go with your coffee or hot chocolate!

Pamski, group of 15 ESF snowboarders sitting across top of Marmotte
Queue for MC telecabine was down the stairs and back along railings as far as Municipal Police office this morning. Snow great this week though. I took a day off and went snow shoeing in the sun, fabulous lunch and walk back in time to meet OH for coffee.

marmotte16, ah, think we might have seen them up there yesterday, or Saturday.
We skied across the field this morning and were able to get through the gates for the Chavannes Express before the huge queue at about 8.55 - so five of us then waited to be allowed onto the chair, eventually we were allowed on and only OH and I moved forward - I didn't dare look back at the huge queue that was waiting at the barrier up from the road - and the red egg didn't seem to be running other than cars coming down from the top. Lovely to have the place more or less to ourselves at the top!!

We're heading out for a three week stay in LG on the 12th. Just a couple of questions that hopefully someone will have the answer to.
1) Do any of the local supermarket chains have online shopping and food delivery? I'm going with two small kids a few days before MrI can join us and hate dragging them around supermarkets (as do the other people in the supermarket.....)
2) Assuming the answer to question 1 is no, where's the best place to do a full shop? We'll have the car.
3) Will I be able to buy a french SIM from any of the Tabac's? From memory there aren't any phone stores in resort and I'm driving from CH so can't pick one up at the airport.
Thank you

MeMyselfandI, Sherpa now appear to be doing deliveries. If you go to the Sherpa website you will find the shop in Les Gets listed under Gets. At least it would get you started.
As you have a car then the best place to shop would be Carrefour in Montriond - just the other side of Morzine. They will shut at lunchtime. Opening hours can be found on the Carrefour website.
In Les Gets itself there is a small Carrefour and also a Casino. The Sherpa shop is on the road to Mt Caly - road goes up beside the Chinfrey hotel at the start of the village - we use that most of the time for topping up as much easier to drive there and park than parking in the village.
Hope you have a good stay. Snowing at the moment..

Pamski, brill, thanks. I think I know the Carrefour, on the right when you're heading down to Thonon? Hopefully the snow will be good but even if it's passable, at least it should be quiet

Has been snowing last few hours so should be fun tomorrow. Slopes were so much quieter today thankfully and then snow this afternoon possibly kept those with lingering hangovers indoors
Talking to a couple of locals in the village this evening, it does seem that it is much busier this year. Also increased bed capacity in Les Gets.
