Jim W I'm interested in your discussions with the Nirvanalps people - we were very pleased with the service from them for our season passes, although they have only just arrived today, having been ordered way back in November!! |
That's strange, mine came within a week or so of being ordered on (IIRC) 15 November.

genepi, et al
so I had lunch today with Laureline Chopard, Marketing and Sales Director of SMA Paradiski, also with Nirvanalps responsibility (and just for a challenge she is taking on the summer entertainment programme).
They are aware that across the domain there is concern over the nirvanalps points programme: it was designed to encourage the private bed rental market, (a la Rob), but has seriously inconvenienced those who are in leaseback, or use a third party to drive their rentals. Specifically the issue is the number of points to get free passes, whilst also losing the 15% residents discount
As a result for next year they are considering a scheme whereby a much smaller number of points will able to be exchanged for price reductions on a range of passes. It will be interesting to see the exact proposals. But it won't change for this year.
Otherwise our discussions were about the new lifts planned - the upgrade and lengthening of Mont Blanc in 1600 next summer being the main activity, which will replace the Deux Tetes drag as well. This will then have a new blue cut to enable access to the Mont Blanc run (and forest) direct from the top - useful for those coming over from Combourciere who didn't want to take on the challenge of Malgovert or Deux Tetes.
Like the rest of us, she was disappointed to be losing a 'secret' part of the domain, but I guess it is right that they open as much as possible to as many as possible, if only to spread the load.
Pre St Esprit upgrade in the 2000 bowl is still scheduled for 2014 (along with St Jacques), but along with some thoughts on moving the night skiing and the toboggan run down there too when the infrastructure can cope (which would please all those who consider the track this year cuts across some great off-piste).
We didn't talk much about the shortcomings of the on-line booking system (other than personal tribulations of family W...) , but we meet again in March and the intent is also to have along Laurent Chelle - the overall SMA big cheese.
So if you have any specific questions for them, drop me a PM, and I'll see what I can do

JimW, thanks for the update. Do you know what kind of lift will replace the Mont Blanc? A 6-pack? Is Comborciere due for an upgrade? I rode it today and even in the milder temperatures we have at the moment it's a long, cold run.
Also, is there any discussion of a pedestrian friendly gondola which will serve the Chantel nursery slopes and the new EdenArc development?

Today.... was..... Numpty day,
Loads of them. Unfortunately just been told tomorrow likely to be similar.
Sooooo.... if it's any consolation to anyone at home, at the moment, on-piste is infested with teenage speed merchants, and off.. is just a little lacking in snow.
Beer is fine though...

In a day? Wow, that's going some! I haven't skied every piste in Les Arcs yet, and I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the off-piste.

rob@rar, what I gleaned was that the new Edenarc development will generate an upgrade to Chantel... was on it myself this morning, and yes, it certainly needs it!
But they want to keep Chantel quiet and a learning / debutant area, so will be looking not to encourage skiers to come into that area from the top. Not quite sure how they do that, but the impression given was that there will be new ways out of Edenarc upwards, but not necessarily routes back directly, that could link into Chantel. How? - Lord only knows!
No news on Combourciere upgrade discussed, (let's leave it tough eh?) but I think Snowcrazy may have some info on the dates on that.

Hi all, new here. I'm off to BSM on 7th Jan for 3 months can't wait to start boarding in les arcs.
surfstar, couple of vets I found from a google search don't know if they are any good as I have never used them or even been to BSM before maybe someone else will be able to vouch for them. I'll actually be staying above the second one listed so I'm sure I'll soon find out if they are any good.

allanm, Nice pics, maybe we should keep these places to ourseleves, to many tracks there already today for my liking.
ArseCaptain, but just for you, it is off the back of col du chal but heading away from the resort so you need to know where you are going, have avalanche gear, heli insurance etc just in case as the pisteurs will not come and get you if you get hurt. Best to take a guide if you are not sure or send me a PM if you fancy a trip down next time you are in Les Arcs.

Today turned out very well. After long lines on the lifts at the start of the day, once we were at the top of the transarc and headed into the back country it was very pleasant. Sun, good company, mixed but enjoyable snow conditions and in the right place, not many people. Plus great views of other a...reas that we all are looking forward to skiing when conditions are right.
The pistes have a very hard base in many places, but are still in good condition with very few bare patches or stones coming through although they are becoming icy on some of the more used routes.
The Off piste is more stable with a light powder covering a hard base in some places, but also very mixed conditions with crud, breakable crust and softer snow all within a space of 500m. The steeper areas are becoming moguled but with a good chalky firm surface.
All the resorts off piste areas are well skied, but we still hope to find some good spots to have more fun tomorrow.
Remember you can now get daily weather and snow report updates on my facebook group page every morning at about 8.30am in English direct from the piste report service from Les Arcs. (If I get up in time to do it of course.)

Happy New Year Everyone!
Went back down Col du Chal with Rob Hutchison yesterday, got fresh tracks in two places.... one.. obvious, half way down to GC and cut off right, looks like it might be a bit of a pole out, but isn't.. surprised no one had spotted that before. After that a bit of a left traverse and another field of untouched powder.
New Years' at Mont Blanc was pretty good..... fireworks were more that adequate!!! Cracking night!!
Bit of a late start today, 'M' is still ferme due to [lack of] snow cover but is fine... it is.. use it!
Some one told me today that ESF intructors weren't allowed to take customers down closed runs [any more], guess 'M' being shut, didn't count as being shut.... Well it is.. officially, as is Comborciere and Cachette (run off the top of , that spills into Comborciere.. ?) all shut, but fine as long as you have a couple of Ptex sticks back home or reasonably good eye sight, either is fine.
BTW... My server is down at the mo so you may or may not see pics posted the other day on post above, I'll get that sorted when I can.

Sunday Pretty well deserted. Think today may have been changover day for some lets.
Snow wise, within the resort, tis pretty bleak, but you can still find small pockets of untracked snow.... hesitate to say powder though. Grand Renard lift brought some nice snow as did the Varet - you need to be just a little adventurous here though.
To be fair the pistes are in pretty good condition.... considering. There are a few closed though including Comborcier and Malgovert, latter is perfectly skiable though. Red runs under the Foret in Vallandry are closed apart form Eagle which was boiler plate tonight.
Another day out with Rob H tomorrow.

charlie26, sorry to hear that - hope she does mend in time.
There are walker passes, and snow shoes, and sled rides, and a number of restaurants both in 1950 / 2000 and the other villages / slopes she can get to using the free buses - for example, she can take the bus to 1800 and get the TransArc lift to the top of the Col de la Chal, where these is a restaurant and ice grotto. Also at Pre St Esprit, just down the hill from 1950 there are two great places to eat that you can ski to.
And I think you can walk to Chalets de l'Arc too.
So plenty of opportunity to meet up and eat while you are still in your clobber.

Arrived tonight up in 2000. Drove down from Reims today. Traffic was horrendous from Dijon until about 5 miles past Chambery? Other side of the road was 100 times worse. Not sure the normally very quiet 1st week of January will be so quiet. Very cold up here. No idea of snow conditions other than there is some, as is very dark. More tomorrow.

Mmmm.... La Plange or further afield I've been told.. taking that advice for tomorrow.
Having said that, there still is some OK skiing, I still got fresh tracks under the Transarc last knockings today, so anyone coming over in the next few days - it aint that bad...... Pistes are 'holding up well', as the resort says, but in reality there are a lot of stones and rocks showing. Beer in Jimmys, as well as WIFI is fine.

Very cold today. Pistes below about 1600 are looking a bit bare, a few to many stones showing through. Gave up going down to Villarogier and came back up at the top of the 1st lift out of there. Not sure the run should have been open.
Went to La Plagne in the morning and did Pierre Blanches. Great run, stopped for coffee in Montchavin in La Ferme to find Cyril has sold and bought the place at the bottom of Pre Saint Espirt in Les Arcs. Of there tomorrow.
Yes low the runs are getting a bit bare but we still had a great day. Lots of skiing, covered quite a distance. Of to la Plagne tomorrow for the day. Aiming to do the new black down from the glacier side. Not sure if it will be open but can definitely see lunch in La Roche. All good.
