Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Has just about stopped raining. Just checked forecast in tourist office and they mention a chance of snow tomorrow night above 1200m whereas the other sites I've looked at suggest more rain. I'll go with the tourist office on this occasion.
Just off to see some ice-hockey.

I know it's only of little comfort, but Flaine was equally wet - and the pistes aren't in as good condition.

Lots of fun though - six kids and six adults. We broke the other four adults!

Won't bother going there then! 1.9 C at midnight in Les Gets and the rain just started to thump down again. Lots of damp clothes drying - not mine - and no-one planning on going anywhere in a hurry in the morning.
As they say it can only get better -

I can live with a bit of rain but not on New Years week with loads of clients with high expectations in resort!!

Maybe off to Thonon pool with the kids today - I know wet but at least out of resort!

Good news for a change

The latest from snow-forecast (at www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Avoriaz/6day/mid ) suggests snow at Avoriaz base from this afternoon, then pretty much every day for the next week as temperatures drop

We've already been to Avoriaz one day this week, the car parks were packed I guess because a lot of people were heading to the higher resorts. Today it appears to be raining everywhere in the Alps so not even going to bother trying to ski, but tomorrow - does that weather report suggest Avoriaz would be a good choice???

Basil Short_trousers,
Report for Avoriaz suggests light snow for Thursday and Friday with temperatures dropping from Thursday night onwards.
We are going to head up after lunch today for a couple of hours, hopefully in snow from 1730 metres upwards, ever hopeful!

Good news here on Swiss side....Started off this morning teaching swimming/snow plough turns in torential rain for it only to change to heavy, heavy snow fall above 1200m! After three hours in this I am happy to say there was quite a transformance in the ways the pistes looked. One hot chocolate/dry off stop and our skis were covered! Long may it continue as we need it and the holiday makers need to see some white pistes before they leave on Saturday!
The forecast is for the temp to drop and more snow fall over the next few days...We wait with baited breath!!!

Any suggestions?!

News from Les Gets. Had enough of monopoly and needed distraction from toothache so off we went up the Chavannes. Needless to say very quiet but we didn't stay out long. It was sleeting/fine snow at about 1600m but the pistes are not in good shape, no surprise after such a lot of heavy rain. Combination of slush and sticky porridge, didn't manage many turns. Several of the reds were closed in the bowl. Mutual decision to come down in a red egg Toofy Grin

That was an hour ago and it has now stopped peeing down. There's even a hint of blue sky Shocked

Will S, I don't know what to suggest, depends which forecast you read as to whether it might snow below 1500m or not Confused Provided I can shift toothache we will prob go up to Avoriaz tomorrow. Not sure if anyone was coming to meet up tomorrow - think we will have to do another time unless snows tonight. Mont Chery wasn't great even yesterday evening I'm told.

Went up to Avoriaz and had some fun, particularly higher up. Some nice powder to be found and even blue sky around 4pm. Winds were a bit variable, we got thoroughly blasted as we headed from the top of the Intrets lift towards the Coupe de Monde but the journey was worth it. It did get a bit bare later down but, all in all, we had a better three hours than we had been expecting.
Forecast is for light snow at Avoriaz base tomorrow so it looks like the pace to go, either via Ardent or Prodains.
Good luck!

Lou, think I agree with the raincheck - didn't go up to Morzine today because of the bad weather reports. Just mulling over tomorrow but think we have to give it a go.

Awesome fun here on Swiss side, great early morning powder to be found...(Enroute to pick my beginners up in Les Crosets!) Pistes were bashed by skis and bums rather than bashers!!! About 8 inches fell last night on top of yesterdays wet snow. By this afternoon a few hard slick patches starting to form, but hey ho it was all good generally. Even blue skies this afternoon. Tomorrow looks ok too at the moment.

Snow this morning in Les Gets and blue skies this afternoon and sun - our younger element skied over to Avoriaz this morning and apart from getting wet going across Morzine they had a great time and we all met up for excellent lunch at the Vaffieu. Lots of bottles, piles of dishes of food and people arriving all to see in the new year later on.

It's been snowing nicely most of the afternoon with the rain / snow limit being somewhere below the top of Super Morzine.

It's currently raining / sleeting / snowing outside the apartment and 1 degree on the comedy weather station...

Snowing like a good un in Champery this afternoon, snow level about 1000m with monster flakes. Approximatley 2 inches in twenty minutes! Pistes are getting a great second covering and looking like a cold, blue powder day tomorrow!

Thanks for the good news! Going to Pleney area in Morzine (Le Viking chalet hotel) on the 9th and was worried about all the rain. It's really brilliant that someone on the spot can - and takes the time to - tell the true story. So thanks again . snowHead

what sort of altitude is that? It was surprisingly uncold here at 1550m this morning - sort of drizzly/sleety but it got usefully colder this afternoon and now chucking it down.

Has been snowing on Mont Chery for most of the afternoon/evening and down at village level since mid afternoon Very Happy Just back from evening toboganning, great fun - it's the only way to do it, decent slope, just a few people out - not sure why more people don't do it but won't grumble Toofy Grin

Fantastic day, feel for the peeps who went home today - snow & sunshine quite chilly. Snowfall has helped heaps but there are a few surprises/bare patches ie Tulipe on the Ranfolly. Chamois still closed at the bottom of Mont Chery but after coming home that way, I hope it's not too long before they open it wink

Cannons were on over Morzine side and they are topping up lower slopes in Les Gets village as I write. Home tomorrow to earn some more skiing ~ hope everyone coming out has a great time, hopefully that hideous rain won't come back. Back with friends for a weekend in March.

Great to meet another couple of snowHeads Very Happy

A mighty fine morning with zzz, Mrs zzz and two of the junior zzzs. Off piste from Chaux Fleurie into Lindaret a nice start then some nice swoopy GS powder into Plaine Dranse and Linga. Depending on aspect between 20-30 cms fresh. Pretty light, although a tad blown in patches.

Gorgeous afternoon with blue skies and splendid light on way home.

A big improvement and looks like more snow on the way (phew!).
