Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Jonpim, omg that sounds like a nightmare. Hope you're home having a nice glass of wine now!
We got the vanoise at 3pm back from Les arcs, so sounds like we had a near miss.

Out in resort at the moment. Snow is good - sheer number of people here ain’t. I’ve never seen it so busy mid January. Anyone know why it seems so busy and is this a La Plagne thing or are other resorts seeing a similar numbers?

Griggs, it was surprisingly busy in Les Arcs over the weekend (we were staying with friends in 1950). Many of our usually quiet places were not quiet at all. Lots of "bombers" whizzing past unnervingly close.

Yep same problem here - you need to ski with a 360 degree camera system. Lots of people skiing too fast for the number of people. Sunny this morning so could be worse today in terms of speed demons.

@Griggs, very busy over champagne side this morning. Never seen it this busy in Jan. Wonder if the cheap lift passes for non-peak weeks is contributing?

@Niederau aged 4, "Montalbert for next Christmas". I would book it - if theres no snow in Montalbert there wont be snow anywhere else - because the snowmaking system has broken down! Plus the Montalbert Gondola goes straight up to Fornelet at 1970m https://app.webcam-hd.com/webcam-station-la-plagne/webcam-montalbert-fornelet. If you search snowHeads I have started this thread every year for the last 18+ years (less the Covid) years and we have stay in Montalbert every Christmas

On the topic: a lot of people in resort and on the slopes. Every saturday evening during arrivals I am in a residence in Belle Plagne to answer any questions regarding the skischool or to book any lessons without having to go in the office.
This saturday the apartment building was completely booked, with a couple of ''late'' Booking the week previous.
As of sunday evening I'm in another big resort in the Tarentaise where it seems equally very busy.

Well, on the subject of busy pistes, yesterday round here was wonderfully quiet - "round here" being our end of the resort: 1800, top of Montalbert, runs off the Becoin and Lovatiere lifts.
Snow hard and tricky below 2000m, snow quite lovely above.

Oh, and we did Andre Martzolf. Was closed all last season. Hard and gravely all the way down. Won't bother again until there some decent fresh snow. Pity, because in good conditons its a lovely run.

@Jonpim, Andre Marztolf is a strange one now, when it was first built it was wonderful with lots of snow on it all season since then its got slightly worse each season. Perhaps they previously made lots of man made snow on the top section and pushed it all the way down, and now they don't bother?
Did you notice the "Under New Ownership since 2022" banner attached to Au Bon Vieux Temps terrace - I guess people thought it was the previous owner out of prison that was running it again, and affecting trade!

Hi all, hope it’s ok to mention travel in this section, but if I should post elsewhere please do let me know!

We’re in La Plagne (belle plagne) very early April for a couple of days then heading to Tignes for another couple of days on Saturday 6th. Trying to decide whether to leave resort on Friday night and and stay in La Plagne Tarentaise or similar rather than driving out on Saturday morning. Does anyone have any ideas of how early the drive out of the valley gets bad and how bad it gets?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all. I'm not sure where to post this question, but you have to start somewhere! I am in Champagny for about a month, and would like to try out a few different skis, and purchase my favorites.
Does anyone have any advice on where I should go in the Paradiski area to demo and purchase? It seems like most shops are holiday ski hire outlets with some accessories and clothes for sale, but no skis.
Thanks in advance.

@Aitchotee, others will have more experience than I, but based on the last 3 years of Easter, the roads weren't busy at all. Compared to Feb half term it is not busy at all! I wouldn't have thought you would need to leave the resort on Friday night.

Hi, I haven't been skiing for 3 years so haven't really been keeping up with the snow weather chat. Me and hubby (ok well just me), prefer cruisey blues and have been to la plagne (Aime 1800) about 8 years ago and really liked the area. we never did get over to the les arcs side so i am thinking this time staying in les arcs with a view to skiing over la plagne for some of the week. I have found a deal to go Hotel Club Belambra L'Aguille Rouge in Arc 2000. I have been looking to make sure that getting from Arc 2000 to as far as Montalbert and back in one day is doable and from research, I think it could be. From reading on this site, I am guessing it is unusually warm at the minute? Bit worried by Jonpim's review of it being tricky below 2000? Does anyone know what the long term forecast is? obviously i know nobody can predict the weather but are the conditions ok out there at the minute and are temperatures due to drop? we arent going to be going until 9 March and i havent got anything booked. Not sure if i should hold off until more last minute. thanks in advance for your help

@polo99, if going 9 March then absolutely no point in worrying about what the weather is doing now. 9 March is peak season still and it will be fine.

Personally if I wanted to split my time skiing both sides I would stay in Vallandry or Les Coches. That said it's pretty easy to get from 2000 to the VE and back again. And yeah going to Montalbert/Champagny fully doable.

We also skied around the Montalbert end of the resort yesterday (staying at Aime La Plagne). Area seemed much quieter. Snow was really nice - bit icy in places but nothing too bad.

Something to be aware of this coming weekend ( from Radio La Plagne )

Traffic conditions for this weekend Eh oh!
Eh oh! In the direction of the climb, we expect 69,000 vehicles over the 3 days from Friday to Sunday (Saturday classified red). Heading downhill, 65,000 (saturated peak around 11am) Saturday you'll drive around in a beautiful Eh oh!
Attention, the peasant mobilization will not weaken. It has now spread to the entire French territory, or almost. This movement should continue with significant road blocks.

Hard packed but won-der-ful day. I only had a short outing today on Les Sources and the stade de Belle Plagne. Les sources was magnificent but I had very sharp edges so I could enjoy it 200%. Before heading out, 2 different people warned me that things were quite hard packed everywhere.

Les Coches is normally skiable into early Apr.

They pound it with fake snow and it holds up well.

As per Whitegold's comment.

It's the route to and from the Vanoise Express so they make sure the snow cannons keep it open.

My list of TR's including many for Les Coches.

Thanks Whitegold and Layne! To be 100% clear, I'm specifically asking about the red run "Coches" (which goes approximately under the Plan Bois lift). Would that be included in the runs they'd prioritise to keep open with snow cannons? As far as I can see, that run itself wouldn't be the default route to or from the VE.

@parigi, no, they do not prioritise that piste and it will be closed if snow cover is poor. The times I go late December and early April more often than not it will be closed.

The chances of it being open in March depend when in March and on conditions. The later in the month it gets and the poorer the snow the more doubtful it becomes.

From memory........The bottom half of that run is also quite exposed to any sun there is and has has a few steeper drops where it goes brown very quickly when there is a lack of snow. I don't think it has snow cannons and isn't an important route for access as they prioritise and keep Mouflon and Mont Blanc (the blues) open for access down into Les Coches and Montchavin.

Would you generally be able to ski into Montchavin 1st week of January or would you need to download on gondela. Looking at chalet there for next year.

Just back from a week in La Plagne, staying down in La Roche. It was a bit of a tale of two halves. We arrived in resort to snow on the trees and relatively cold temps, which was followed up on Monday evening by a nice dump of snow, although snow at 1500m at 3pm, soon became rain/sleet by about 7pm which was a bit of a disappointment. But plenty of snow up high for the boarders in our group to go play in the powder fields over on the champagny side on Tuesday morning. Rest of the week was very sunny and a lot warmer so felt more like spring freeze/thaw type conditions.

Had a few issues with my new boots, which I was half expecting. I don't think I got them set up right on Monday, which led to bruised/swollen inside ankles, which meant I had to go easy after that. Pretty much back to normal on the Friday without any issues - which makes me think the boots are fine, I just didn't get them right on Monday.

Hi all, Son out at UCPA Plagne Centre this week. He's on half time instruction and looking for people to join for a social ski Wednesday and
Thursday and Friday mornings.

Solid intermediate, he's just had a week with UCPA in Tignes, where luckily there were lots of English speakers!

Do let me know if anyone around, I will pass on details.
