Sit down lunch after ski school - Bagus Café on Rue De La Poste does a good tartiflette; if you're in Val Claret I rate the pizza at Pépé 2000, and La Pignatta always used to be good. Plenty to choose from though I haven't been for 2 years (along with just about everyone else). I expect our resident snowHeads will have more up to date info |

@Axe, If you are there the Eterlou half way down RDLP is very reliable for the Savoyarde Favourites.
For a blow out the Queue de Cochon in Lavachet, Box in Lavachet for bar meals, Mendikoa in Lavachet for a meat frenzy.

+1 for pizza 2000. Service slow but gave us a discount as compensation without having to ask. Bagus - served something questionable in burger which resulted in a broken tooth. La Pignatta - despite having informed them that one of our party had a nut allergy still provided dish with nuts in.

Not yet BUT the melt freeze should help where it froze (which is didnt lower down last night I dont think!). Quite a few plaques popping out today - should stabilise more tomorrow

I was checking the webcams earlier and I have to say somewhat depressing to see the motte looking so bare at this time of year.

I'm guessing Tignes Cuisine and Jam Bar are still good bets.

+1 for l'Eterlou, if you're into your meat the Pavé De Boeuf is to die for.
Queue De Cochon is very handily right next to the bus stop in Le Lavachet, good happy hour drinks, haven't had a sit down meal in there since around 2015 but Chocksaway's recommendation is easily enough

From Radio Val d’Isere
We don't reccomend traveling at all on Saturday if possible, as roads are expected to be saturated from 8am onwards and we're even expected a few difficulties on the roads between 6pm and 8pm this evening. If you're planning on travelling tomorrow, we recommend leaving early to get to Albertville before 7am, or alternatively, only travelling after 7pm.
Good luck everyone, just remember it’ll be worth it when you arrive, and enjoy that beer/wine after unpacking.

I’ve made it to Albertville by 0715am and it’s busy but flowing .. glad we left Dijon at 4am though !

The weather for the next couple 36 hours will be nice before it goes downhill on Monday afternoon with the passage of a wavering and weakening cold front. From Wed onwards there is a bit of a battle between the fringes of the Azores High and the unsettled weather over the UK, so most forecasting bets are off!
After a cold night tomorrow will be sunny with light winds, take profit as the locals would say. Monday morning will see the arrival of some clouds but there should be enough sun in between to make for good skiing. The cloud will thicken after lunch and light snow will start to fall at some stage, there may be the odd high altitude flocon before this however, from the bubbly shower cloud. The wind at altitude will pick up. Tuesday looks like being overcast with winds at altitude and light intermittent snow showers all day, perhaps a day for the trees if there's enough depth to cover all the roots, that's not normally a problem in Feb! Wednesday is a long way off but windy throughout, snow showers and sunny periods, the showers may be a bit moist below the Dam. A look out of the window day.
I see the traffic is not great but not horrific, hope you all got there safely.

Anyone had any experience with Oxygene ski school’s ‘Steep and Deep’ course?
I’m wanting to do it the week of March 20 because my preferred Ultimate ski school is booked out that week.
I’ve not had any ski lessons so I don’t know whether I will be suitable for that course. I do have experience skiing off the marked trails in Canada and USA. I love to ski fresh snow and like to get out of my comfort zone to a degree.
I do have a dodgy 49 year old left knee that I have to ‘manage’ though.
I guess if it turns out that I’m not up to the task they could bump me back to another group lesson?

@sbooker, Oxygene are new in Tignes this year, so I can't offer an opinion. But they have been operating in Val D'Isere for years, so you could ask there.
The off piste guys at New Gen are great, although they are a bit smaller in number, thanks to covid. Same for TDC. Or if you want to push the boat out and go private Kev Herbert at the link on Page 1.

You could try New Gen’s “instructor led guiding” offerings; you can do a Monday morning “intro to off piste” and then two full days later in the week which are billed “intermediate off piste”. So a good way to start gently and work up.

@swoafs,
@sbooker, You would need your own safety kit. (Shovel, transceiver and probe) First part of the Monday sessions normally includes some transceiver training. (no bad thing) Then a couple of hours or so of skiing. I've done it a couple of times and once ended up having a one to one session/lesson with Jerome from NewGen due to a very last minute cancellation (injury related) by the other 2 clients.

Oddly I was just looking at options for Off-Piste w/c 28th March. It is the only week I can do with family trips and have already done piste based trips on the SH PSB & BB. My preferred choice would be Snoworks but they do not have a course that week.
Oxygene have no offering that week but they do the week before. I have done off-piste with Evo2 & Ultimate in Tignes and recommend.
I am a Ski Club GP member. I really only keep the membership for the Instructor Led Guiding. There is a good discount with New Gen but you need to pay up front and I see there is no one else booked that week. I am reluctant to to financially commit as the I believe the Ski Club only reimburse the week before if the course does not go ahead. I do not want to miss out on other courses and end up skiing alone on piste.
I recollect being in this situation in 2020...
@sbooker I booked a week in Les Coches with ESF once as a relative newbie and had a great time although I was the only English speaker
|
|
|
|
|
|
@sbooker,
Also look at Evo2.
Whoever you book with if your skiing isn't up to it they'll let you know.
But if you can ski the Naturides (marked XXX on the piste map) you'll probably be OK.

Hi, just reposting this from another thread. Anyone skiing in Tignes/Val d'Isere this week who would be interested in adding a 19yo young man to their group? I've injured my knee on day 1 and now my son is going to be skiing on his own. I feel a bit bad for him so I thought I'd see if I can find someone for him to ski with. He's a decent intermediate level skier, he can get down most runs without too much trouble but not maybe at top speed. Thanks!

Are you based in Tignes or Val?
Your son would be most welcome to join the social skiers in Val and this week there may be a few younger skiers but as they meet up at the base of Olympique lift in Val at 09.30am coming from Tignes would mean first lifts for a 19yr old?
Happy to give you more details if this is of interest .
Cheers

Hi, Mike (not sure how to @ you when you have two words in your name!)
We're in Tignes le lac, so it's a couple of lifts to get to the bottom of Olympique - doable but a bit of a stretch in the time given that he's still in bed right now... He could maybe meet them at the top of Olympique, though, if they're willing.
He's feeling a bit weird about the whole idea anyway so I've suggested to him he ski on his own for today and maybe we'll try arranging something for tomorrow if that's OK with them.
Really appreciate you getting back to me - so glad I found this forum!

Keep in touch and we can review later in the week.
Meeting the groups at a coffee stop is another option.
Sadly I am not in Val this week but there will be someone able to arrange amongst the Val chapter.

@Flatfrog,
The group meets at 09.30 am base of Olympique lift near the large piste map.
A liittle late to try and get there today but when I know which way they are going and a likely coffee stop I will let you know so Matt can aim to meet up.
Coffee stop usually 11.30.
Ask for Paul,Stuart or Kim.
