I can see that happening entering France by road, but that would be it on a drive to Austria. Accepted all EU airports may stamp them, especially in the beginning. Even if its just to prove a point after leaving

How do I "demonstrate" I have not been in Portugal? Portugal does not stamp UK passports at the moment. They may after 1st Jan, or they may not, but I am thinking about next month, not next year.

The trouble is the onus is on me to prove that I have not been to Portugal rather than the Austrian border police proving I have. Let’s say I pitch up at the border and they ask for proof I haven’t been to Portugal. I show them my bank statement with only UK and allowable country transactions. They reply “What about your other bank accounts or other mobile phones”. I can only show that I have been to Portugal not that I have not been.
Actually, unless I am flying directly from an unlisted country I just don’t see this happening. I really cannot see them checking passports or other documentation when entering from another Schengen country.

@johnE, I actually am thinking events may change quite markedly in the next 2-3 weeks rendering it almost impossible to travel anyway potentially via France, Belgium and Germany without quarantine on return. Bozo appears to be on a mission to penalise anyone who wants to travel anywhere, and particulary given his anti-EU position i'd be highly surprised if he doesnt come down hard in the next 2-3 weeks. He's clearly seething becasue he's been criticised for his handling of the first spike and doesnt want to appear weak or indicisive again, also that the EU negotiations are not going well so imo any excuse he can find for effectively closing outbound travellers at the earliest opportunity he will jump on. Lets wait and see, his propoganda machine ie the BBC is certainly revving itself up that way, towing the party line.

Traffic from Munich was normal. There seemed to be a queue at the border heading back into Germany, checks I think. Huge queue for no apparent reason heading out of the ziller Valley at the motorway.

@JimboS, There have been reports of trees blown over in recent storms causing damage in Zillertal. Queue might be related to that.

On the wayback from Hallstatt, Austria at the weekend we saw many more Brits travelling East on the A1 towards Vienna. Suspect they were travelling to the Balkan countries, Greece or Turkey etc.

@JimboS, Bavaria has introduced testing for returning holidaymakers or visitors from "high risk" countries and there is a test point at Kiefersfelden. It is "strongly recommended" rather than compulsory and neither Tirol nor any part of Italy fall into the high risk category but I guess they are checking cars to encourage folk to take tests.

I don't think credit card bills prove, or disprove, anything - given that you can use them over the phone or online. If you really need to prove where you have been, then things like physical receipts (including for cash withdrawals, or travel), tracker apps on phones or fitness devices, or "check-ins" on social media accounts are probably better.

At the moment it looks as if we can cross Austria to get to the Dolomites, so now for my next question.
According to Mappy.com our best route is from Germany from Kepton to Innsbruck via the Fern pass. I've done this route before (it takes forever) but cannot recall where to buy a Vignette for that short stretch of motorway in Austria. Can anyone advise me where to get a vignette from?

@Pamski, I looked at getting a number plate recognition one, but they require 18 days to process it and we are planning to go in the next couple of weeks. Is there a better route than over the Fern pass? It takes hours.
Thinking about the return, I assume you can get one at the top of the Brenner, but we do have time to get an electronic one.

@johnE, Yes, there's a very fancy service station/museum at the top of the pass right on the border coming over from Italy. They sell them there. That's assuming you're in Italy for more than 10 days, else you won't need a second one.
It's useful to have a variety of cards available for the Italian tolls, as sometimes they don't work.

I've never had a problem, but on one journey when I think my wife had my euro card I used a lloyds bank sterling card. They charged me £1 for every transaction - there were a lot of them down the Aosta valley. At times I was paying more to lloyds bank than to the motorway operators. I have learnt my lesson.

@johnE, If you go the Fernpass route there are plenty of petrol stations selling vignettes on the way (eg at Nassereith or Telfs) you can also pay for the Brenner with a "video maut". It can be better to go via Bregenz and the Arlberg, though the Arlberg tunnel is quite expensive, if you want a bit of sightseeing go for the Arlberg and Reschen passes (if you are travelling on a peak Saturday has the advantage of avoiding the huge jams on the Brenner autostrada between the pass and Bözen, especially at the toll booths at Sterzing). Do note most of the autobahn in Tirol is 100km/h speed limit

So with Luxemburg now on the 14 day quarantine, does that mean avoid totally on the route back, or just no stopping? I normally get a suck of fuel either at Schengen on the way down, or the last service station before the border with Belgium on the way back.

A very good question. One might hope that the Government will issue clarification, but don't hold your breath...

Unless you are prepared to go into quarantine I would be inclined to avoid. I think any evidence of stopping would be a problem. And what if you get a breakdown?
Note also that Belgium is being closely monitored, and may go the same way.
