Band of precipitation heading over from Calais at the moment. It reaches southern Valais Monday evening. But how much of it reaches Zermatt is in the lap of the gods.
From the tourist office’s point of view this is all good. The February half term crowds are mainly piste skiers. The pistes are in good condition so they want clear skies while they are out Let the storms return early March.

I'm hoping for a little fresh stuff first week of March, was hoping to get off-piste if conditions allow. Today will be first day of skiing in 2 weeks, not that i'm counting or anything

@JohnMo, truth be told, my wife and I are mainly piste skiers. As long as the storms finish by March 7th, that’s fine by me.

It has been a really good season for piste skiers this season. Not much comfort for those out when the winds were closing stuff but for most it has been fantastic. Hopefully it will be calm for you. Bit windy up at Klein Matterhorn today but after this evening's small top up it is looking great skiing conditions for the week ahead. I am exiled from CH for a month now as I am off to the US for my skiing. I would like a few dumps before mid-March so off piste is tip top again.

Windy today, not much open, sticky snow in parts. Fingers crossed it's better tomorrow. Cervinia pistes closed all day.

Plenty of snow on the pistes, but a lot of bare patches (grass/rock) elsewhere - I assume because of the wind. A lot more ice visible on the high glaciers, presumably also because of the wind.

Why were cervinia pistes closed all day?
We’ve done two great days at Pila (close to our accom.) and lovely soft snow skiing all day today but now fancy a change.
Torn between champoluc or cervinia. Sunny forecast but higher wind at champoluc.
Any info great fully received. Just need to avoid lots of ice as wides confidence is good so far.

Not closed to those based in Cervinia. Closed to those based in Zermatt. The link is right on the Apline Ridge so is vulnerable to wind. The link should be open again tomorrow as winds don’t look as bad.

Cervinia lifts closed by about 3 today. Valtournenche was still open. Hoping for crossing to Zermatt to be open tomorrow, though forecast on their app does say some gusty winds on Klein Matterhorn in the afternoon

Thinking of parking at valtourneche. Was the run back down to there nice or sketchy?

Did Cervinia lifts open at normal times today? They were showing as closed this morning on the displays in Zermatt and on the Zermatt app.

@caughtanedge, If the link from Zermatt is closed, the Cervinia lifts show as closed on the Zermatt website/app.

I'm sure that on the old Zermatt piste display boards with red and green lights, the status of the Cervinia pistes was shown, regardless of the status of the links? But I may be mistaken....

How far back are you going? I have been going to Zermatt since 2010 and in that time once the link is closed all the boards/websites/apps from the Zermatt side show Cervinia pistes as closed, regardless of their actual status for those over on that side.

@JohnMo, In that case I am mistaken - I'm sure you're right.
We've been struggling to work out when we first came here, however #1 son has just arrived 2 days late from UK (Storm Dennis), and we think it was about 2006

What's the best way to avoid getting stuck in Cervinia if they close the link? I read somewhere they generally only open it if they think they can keep it open, is that true? Otherwise i guess its just a case of making a sensible called based on the weather?

It's indeed always best to be sensible and not count on others.
That being said they tend to keep the link closed for the entire day even if there is even the slightest chance that the weather will force them to close.

I must admit I feel differently to @Skiwi222. If I want to go over and the link is open I don't second guess them - I just go over.
At each lift station in Cervinia (and same for visitors from Italy in Zermatt) there is a "last time to get on this lift to get back to Zermatt) clearly posted. The time is fairly generous but, even as an experienced cross border skier I tend to stick to their timings. Occasionally winds will pick up and they will ask you to go back earlier. But that will also be clearly posted at the lift station. However, they will not leave you stranded if you get back to the border before the original posted time.
You will hear tales of people being caught on the "wrong" side but that will almost certainly be because they lost track of time and missed the last lift. I was touring with a Zermatter guide last year and we skied all the way down to the Monte Rosa resorts (i.e. in Italy, a long, long way from Cervinia). He was in his sixties and had been guiding since he was a young man. In over 40 years he had ended up stranded in Italy once.

Cross posted from Courmayeur thread:
Back from a cracking day at cervinia. Parked at valtourneche. 75m from gondola. Three lifts and a drag all went quick as looming at epic mountains in sunshine.
Run down to cervinia was mainly nice. Just a bit narrow and icy at bottom then ended up at road and had to walk 500m uphill to lift that was shown on map as linked. Grrrr.
Good couple of laps of theodulpass after lunch with the boys in hero snow then up to plateau Rosa and down ventina to finish. There were a few powder moguls up high then a bit of ice lower down but nothing too bad. The boys skills are coming in well. Wife downloaded on the gondola

@Russeh, I think the risk is much over-hyped but it does give a frisson of excitement the first few times you cross over. We even took our passports. In many seasons of skiing Zermatt and Cervinia, we have never been stranded. Hope this is not “famous last words”!
As JohnMo says, watch out for the messages at the lift stations. I think it is as Skiwi222 says, they don’t open the link if they think the weather is going to deteriorate during the day. We have been over in Cervinia and have scurried back when the “last lift” time has changed but there was plenty of time to pop back over.

So, finally went over to Zermatt from Cervinia yesterday, and even though views were gorgeous, we found many trails were icy, compared to Cervinia. Particularly, run 62 down to Furi was horrendous sheet of ice. Is that common for Zermatt, or just our luck? Hoping for some fresh snow today

@OTS, no offence taken at all, it compares favourably with the best in Zermatt, of which there are many excellent places.
Still the prospect of snow, late Feb early March although slightly less pronounced than previously in GFS 12z. Let’s see what 06z brings.

Actually snowing reasonably heavily on the Riffleberg and Gornergrat webcams, making a lie of the Zermatt site forecasts on the very same page!
