@stanton, have they done anything with Taps over the off-season? Used to love it there, but it hasn't developed at all, and the fact they've had EXACTLY the same aprs play list for 5 years was just too much for me last season (the Cotton eyed Joe gag get's tired after 2 days, never mind 5 years). KK or Griabli (mood dependant) for me this year I reckon.

Folks. The Weather.
It is generally going to dry & sunny up to Xmas. There be a scattering of snow over but nothing significant. Therefore what you see on the Webcams is what your going to get over the next two weeks.
Hopefully things will change after Xmas..looks like the previous two seasons all over again...

I know some of you folks love St Anton, and I'm one of you having been there over 20 times with another trip coming up in 3 weeks. I've often thought I would like to find out a bit about the history of the place, but found it hard as I don't speak Austrian. Anyway I've just read a great book by Franz Gabl the Olympic medallist in 1948 who was brought up in St Anton. He describes his early life in the village in the 1920s/30s working for Hannes Schneider and his father. He also covers the nazification of St Anton after the anchsluss, and the four years he spends on the Russian front in the war, and much more. The book is called "FRANZL", I couldn't put it down for two days so thought I would share it with you.

Long Term Weather.
It looks as if we are now looking into 2017 for a Decent Storm .
Current Weather suggests it will be dry, way to mild & sunny (occasional very light dust at altitude) up to the 29th December.
Here is the Official Arlberg Weather Story for next few days
Weather
The calm and settled high pressure weather will continue until and beyond the weekend. Bright sunshine will determine the weather. Clear skies or at least almost clear skies are forecast. Clouds are only exceptionally expected. The wind in the mountains will remain weak and the temperatures will remain too mild for the season in the high mountain regions. Lower temperatures are expected in the valleys, particularly in the mornings.

There be a dip in the Temperature next week so they will be able to put the cannons on 24*7 & there will be some very light snow at altitude on 1 or 2 days.
However, after Xmas it will get significantly warmer until the New Year.
There is no major Storm in the forecast probably now until 2017.
Anyone out here for Xmas/Sylvester will only need normal shoe wear for town & maybe an umbrella.

Google translate from alpinforum:
The season has begun!
Probably will be on Friday, 16.12. The following plants are also in operation:
Vallugabahnen I + II (for pedestrians) | Kindlisfeldlift | Tramway | Muldenlift | Rendlbahn (as a feeder) Maassbahn | Gampbergbahn (of course the Kassa am Rendl is also opened)
Additionally, the following restaurants are also available:
Bella Vita and Valluga View as well as Rendl Restaurant
The following plants are expected to start on Saturday, 17.12. In operation:
Cableway | Arlenmähderderbahn
In addition of course the restaurant at the Kapall.
There is the Wedel-Wochen-Tarif from 17.12. Until 23.12.2016.

Kindlislift is not Fangbahn. Fangbahn is the chair that goes from behind the wellness to just up and across the piste from the Rodelalm, Kindlisfeld is the button at the WM stadion.

They're having a good old moan on the German forum about the Arlberg's dire lack of snowmaking...
Too reliant on natural snow leaves them in the current position where their offer under these conditions is very much inferior to rival ski areas.

They were blowing plenty when I was touring there in November. Made a mess of the natural snow in lots of places.

That is simply not true & you cannot compare Ischgl with St Anton . Ischgl has predominately North Facing slopes so it is a lot easier for them to retain the snow they make. St Anton only has Rendl with predom North Facing.
St Anton has invested millions into snow making , they can cover all the Pistes in approx 3 days going 24*7 and even at the end of April we still ski on Manmade Pistes all the way to the Valley south facing slopes !!

Ischgl money stays in Ischgl to develop the resort, hence the piste management is amazing, St Anton has to give a proportion of its money to in investment company

Ok Folks there has been a shift/change in the longer term weather.
It now looks as if around 28/29 Dec the temperature will cool down, likely rain to start then snow 29th onwards including 31st where temperature will really start to drop -6C or below in town.
Bring it on!!

And the pertinent comments from Franz (I only recently connected the dots and realised I lived next door to him in Innsbruck for 2 years!):
Quote: |
Snowpack on top of the Valluga in St. Anton. About 75 cm of sugar snow. |
Quote: |
It looks probably fun but this is the base right now which is very weak. It will take several weeks till it will stabilise or an avalanche will "clean" the face |
