Snow Forecasts seem to have the freeze line around 1500m-2500m the next couple of days, dropping to around 1000m through Sat.
Of course that IS Snow Forecast where there always seems to be snow on the right hand side of the forecast, it just doesn't always make it to the left.

@Mjit, as has been said here before, snow-forecast is a bit rubbish.
Far better to use Chamonix Meteo for PdS

In theory, with a saturated lapse rate of around 6 degrees per 1,000m then the freezing lie should be at around 2,000 metres. Sounds about right

Naa, I'll stick with the blind optimism of S-F. I mean it's not like it makes any difference - you're going to get what you get and can't change it - so you might as well spend the build-up in excitement rather than trepidation

La Rosta weather station at 1,661m has been at one degree above zero all day, and that is at 1650m metres. Should be some fresh snow from mid mountain up.

It was snowing up there! Yesterday morning there was a very nice fresh dusting up there and snow showers on and off. The first squeaky snow of the season for me when I got off the chair. Heading up there shortly and hoping for more from the overnight showers. Looking forward to a quiet couple of hours at least

My legs are a bit tired now but just from walking. I went with daughter and SIL, plus their two girls in a backpack and Baby Bjorn up the Pointe lift on Mt Chery and then down a path which was steeper and trickier than the one we should have chosen..... to have lunch at the Grande Ourse. Then back down to the gondola over bits of snow, mud, ice etc, and a quick coffee at the Belvedere. According to the forecast we should have a bit of snow over the next few days. Les Gets looked to be heaving with people and cars this afternoon. No fresh milk (the men shopped in Taninges the other day and thought UHT would follow, and have since been making waffles with any fresh milk we had!), cars going up one way streets the wrong way, and what is it with dog owners in France that they don't pick up? so plus ca change.

chatel very icy today, but above avoriaz it was lovely - maybe 15cm of fresh snow at the top of fornet, and some enjoyable off-piste!
tough conditions this week and busy, but plenty of fun to be had - pretty impressive that after a month without snow, you could ski with a smile and without stopping from 2200m (top of avoriaz) to 1200m (prodains)

Judging by Sarah's post it sounds as though my guess of 2,000m was closer (but still not close enough) to the truth.

Report from the guy at Chatelweb was 2cm at 1800m and 4cm at 1900m from his trip out today. Looks like the rain/snow limit was a little higher than expected. Hopefully we get snow to village level tomorrow.

Horrible drizzle in Les Gets where we are at around 1250. Mere spattering of white over on MC but not down as far as the Belvedere. Still hoping for it to snow later today...

Dusting of snow showing on the Les Gets bordercross webcam, which I guess is about 1350m. Webcam image has a 15 minute delay, and it takes a while for snow to settle, so may be snowing down into the village by now. Snow doesn't look that heavy though.

@under_a_new_name - the Chavannes webcam is quite good as it is live, not many skiers on the pistes today and i saw a couple come down on the chair. The other cams are only updated ocassionally but at least they have timestamps. Fresh snow now showing on the Front de Neige at Les Gets (13h31)

We're heading out to Morzine with our toddler on the 10th for 2 weeks and following the snow forecasts and webcams pretty obsessively right now.
We'd like to get the little dude moving around on cheapo plastic skis just to get a feel for having planks on his feet - is there anywhere in Morzine or Avoriaz that we could hire or buy them from or better to get hold of some over here? We were going to borrow from a friend here but their kid won't let them out the house now they've rediscovered them as a means of walking around on carpet.
Also, any recommendations for ski instructors for a couple of private lessons? We're staying in Morzine but expecting to be heading to Avoriaz most mornings based on the current snow. Bit of off-piste if there is actually enough snow but otherwise piste technique as I still can't carve for toffee, for 2 relatively okay on most pistes skiers (one who lacks confidence, one who doesn't - but both in need of the usual pointers, drills and bad habit stopping).

Not sure about plastic skis but I'm sure someone will help with that. We've recommended Billski to friends who have really, really enjoyed lessons with him.

All looking white again in Les Gets, the trees and the garden are covered, son in law has cleared the drive and the dog came back with clods of snow all down her legs do into the laundry sink again. The road up by the Labrador hotel looks as if it will be fun later for ill equipped cars. We drove to the Atray Creperie, en famille, today for lunch.

@mikeycharlton, the brew pub in La Chappelle is Le Fer Rouge. Worth a visit for a burger and a few beers. It's about 1km outside the village heading up towards Chatel.

Thanks mate. I'm staying about 200m from the Panthiaz lift (towards la chapelle) so the pub should be very close?
