Not been posting on here since 22 December-ish, just got back from a great Christmas/ New Year trip with my wife pals and met up with German friends also. Have just spent the last 5 mins catching up with the above last 2 pages and can't stop laughing...... Here is a brief trip overview and a few FACTS guys:-
It was a warm sunny christmas and cooled towards NY with no appreciable snowfall but 10-15cm fresh fell on Thursday which put about 10cm on Osthang/ Schindler, fantastic piste prep by the team all week. Never went up Kapall, Albona, Lech/ Zurs......mostly skied Schindler, Valluga, Galzig and Rendl areas. Nasserein carpark rammed from 27/28 December onwards, town super busy and many Germans/ Dutch/ English/Irish voices, heard or saw very few Skandiis.
Great spring skiing off top of Schindler (Valluga side in the sun after 11am), Bachseite good especially after Thursday top-up. Larches not possible, not enough snow. Pistes pretty icy but some great carving about (even on 108 underfoot). Great terraces in the sun late afternoon (new terrace at Gampen awesome), tee-shirt sunbathing, cold once sun dropped. Mooserwirt and KK dead outside until 28/29th December, as was Underground all only possible to access on foot. Murmel Bar great in town, Gunar and a new female artist (Alanis Morissette-ish). Galzigbistrobar rammed and great fun as always.
NYE very busy in town and great fireworks, NYDay slopes empty, best day. Locals are predicting at least 50cm in next few days, 30cm last night in Warth, its going to be fine from next weekend onwards. Farmers were putting snow chains on their tractors Friday and one I spoke to said he's still maintaining it'll be a great season (i've got a season pass so i'm super-confident it will be). We left 6am Saturday for Rotterdam ferry and it was -9C in St Jakob, heavy overnight frost and starting to snow, raining heavy all the way up through Germany and very cold.
Awesome week, different (proper lift served freeride not possible, never wore my ABS) but really glad we went, had an ace time. Back on 21st, can't wait. Sorry missed you Kelskii, realised didn't have your number and only had limited wifi so never got on SH.....looks like you having fun too.

@Markymark29, no worries, been quite busy. Nice pocket of powder in Stuben today so rinsed and repeated a few times. Here until Sunday so, may have a few good days. Will try and get back for a long weekend sometime like last year. Now having a beer in Basecamp; parked the brain outside before i came in, of course.

@Kelskii, ha!
@kitenski, No, got a decent edge on the WD Ranger CL's and wanted the option for offpiste at high altitude, softened up nicely in the sun just before lunch and stayed good all afternoon.

@stanton, do you know why Arlenmähderbahn is closed? Mildly concerned about the queues it will cause at schindler as the only way over to stuben side.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Dr John, It was closed last week and queues last week weren't too bad at Schindlergradbahn, snow cover down to Arlenmahderbahn looked OK I just assumed that they wanted to keep the snow for NY but that came and went and it was still closed. It could be that they don't want people going off-piste down to it because snow cover to it from top of Valfegehrbahn is very light (south facing). Or dop they not have snow cannons down there, cant remember? Main pinch point last week was bottom of Tanzbodenbahn which was really busy at times.
Interestingly there's a new short itinery appeared this year for accessing Schindlergradbahn lift. If you do the big schuss then head down towards Steissbachtal then pull a quick right to join the cat-track to Tanzbodenbahn then just as the dip rises its there on the right.....only short but good way of accessing Schindler (because the linking piste was closed).

thanks @Markymark29. I don't think they have snow making down there, but I've not know it closed for so long before, still not showing open today. There are a couple of gulleys down there that people could fall into so poss waiting for decent accumulation.
I think the cut through to Schindler you mention was there last year, perhaps they've just made it official now.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Schindlergrat queues haven't been too bad, although Valluga is an alternative access for the run down to Rauz/Stuben. Problem has been that there are some people who have been going up there that probably shouldn't be ability wise...
Hopefully they'll get a bit more open in the next few days, there was another top up last night and they were pushing snow around on the Hoppelweg and red 21 yesterday as if they might be about to open them up. Opening the Hoppelweg will make a big difference as it should take some of the ski school traffic from elsewhere (Kapall being one of them, very busy up there yesterday).

@Sitter, that's exactly my problem, will be with a couple of intermediates and 19 can be very sketchy. Agree opening 21 & 23 is a priority. Fingers crossed for this week, I'm on the first lift Friday morning.

They have done for the last few seasons, I've often seen mobile canons in place down there (i.e. the big fans rather than the fixed metal pipes). I suspect that they have either not bothered to run them or they did but the snow is still not deep enough due to the high temps a few weeks ago and the southerly aspect.
Or maybe they moved the canons to help build up the base for the home runs?

@sah, yes, think you're correct there. Hope this weeks dump opens it up. In busier weeks you're looking at a choke point at Schindler and carnage on 14 with early intermediates.

Its Snowing in Town...
Official resort weather
Throughout the upcoming days, the Alpine regions will remain located in a continuously changeable westerly weather current with a high risk for precipitation. The approaching air masses will be repeatedly humid and moderately cold, consequently the snow line will remain located around a level of 1000 meters. The details of this weather conditions are still uncertain, consequently the forecast may change from day to day. The sun will also get a chance. At the moment, the best conditions are forecast for Wednesday and for Friday, however, a detailed forecast cannot be given at the moment.

Just to be clear, the articles quoted say that an unknown skier hit the Englishman ("ein unbekannter Skifahrer über eine Geländekante und kollidierte dabei mit einem 56-jährigen Engländer"), who then collided with the German who then hit the piste rescuer. The unknown skier fled the scene.

@stanton,
It clearly is not the Englishman who has been causing the accident, but another -unknown- skier.
Maybe you should improve a bit on your German...
You were also telling us that no substantial snow would come this week (it probably is 40 cm by now, and more to come), and that the locals already have given up on this season, which is complete nonsense of course

@stanton, will do, I'll just remove my ranting, I appreciate it was an honest mistake.
@Langerzug, I've never met stanton but this is the first time I've know him mis-quote German text. His quick translations/summaries are actually very usefuul to those of who are not fluent. I doubt his German needs any work.

@Langerzug, Cut us some slack I try to give as accurate impartial info as possible.
40cms is nothing & the forecast is not indicating any substantial snow this week, a few cms. In the Valley it will be getting upto +5c again !
Have you tried Langerzug this season yet, goodluck if you do?

Probably better getting several smallish dustings at the moment anyway with there being no base, might make it a little more stable when more snow arrives.

@stanton,
I'm sorry, but I'm finding a lot of information here (as in other internetfora) currently slightly tendentious. (is that an english word?)
For 99% of the skiing world, 40 cm (on the first day of this week) is very good, especially given the poor conditions up til now. You really sound rather pessimistic!
Furthermore, we are currently talking the 4th of January, with almost the full season ahead of us. (whilst I'm very well aware of the economic importance of the Christmas/New Years period)
And here is the 14 d forecast for Rüfikopf:

My Langerzug will be fine early March anyway

Glad to see the Arlberg getting some snow! Having dealt with a winter with lack of snow from '14/'15 season, I can see that nerves get frayed with lack of snow! It's one reason I pulled the plug on my Xmas trip to Europe. I hope the white fluffy cold smoke powder keeps falling. I have no plans to hit Europe this season. Staying stateside this year but I can empathize with the Euro ski hoardes wanting to get after it and off-piste!

More snow again last night and this morning. Plenty of people heading off piste but obvious the base is none existent when you see the grass/mud/stones where a lot of them have turned! No more pistes have opened up as yet, despite them looking like they might open red 21 and the Hoppelweg by pushing the snow around. Still people going down them, saw parents with 2 kids going down the Hoppelweg, the kids did't seem to be enjoying it too much going by the noise...

Off Piste is still to thin. To many obstacles, ravines, rocks just under the surface. Foolish imo .
Still to mild for the time of year.
Anyway keep the Medical services going they made so much last season they were able to buy a new helicopter

@Sitter, I'm amazed they 21 & 23 are still both closed, would have thought it's causing all sorts of congestion issues. Also Arlenmander. I've not known these runs to be closed for so long before.

Yup. Apparently Mario Matt has had several words with the relevant people about it, although there are the seasonnaires and returning guests that know that Taps and KK are there, they are missing out on the passing trade. The only blue run down form Gampen is 20 down to the bottom of Happy Valley and on from there, I've not been down in a while, looked at it as I was nearing the top of the Gampenbahn and it was near enough a solid block of people. Stuck to "black 25" instead. Seeing quite a few people, sensibly, using the lifts to download, but a lot of people just not leaving enough room when overtaking others.
