Snow again all day today. Went over to le Carroz as cold and windy around Morillon. Had a great morning around there then back over to Chalet de Clair for lunch. Legs were gone then so back down home. Have had a great week. Huge amount of snow in last two days. Next week will be amazing. Enjoy all those coming and safe travels to all tomorrow. Au revoir til next year. |
This sounds promising, I fly out tomorrow evening and I am staying in Morillon 1100

Thanks sj1608 - that is very reassuring.
Snowfall has been great - looking forward to first day skiing on Sunday now. I'll update you all if I can (wiFi dependant).

Today in Flaine was amazing. Had snowed heavily last night and lightly most of today. At 9.30 only lifts running were Tete des Verts and Aup de Veran. Had one run off Tete des Verts and saw Grands Vans moving - but not carrying anyone. Over to the Egg and did 4 runs off the side of Mephisto making fresh tracks. Grands Vans opened but still no links to the other resorts. In the afternoon we heard that the links were open so up Grands Vans and down to Lake Vernant. A bit crusty at the top, much better lower down. Off piste still bumpy under the powder. Up Corbalanche and then down the off piste either side of Sortilege, repeated three times! Lovely light powder, some of it still untracked.
Still snowing lightly, the next few days promise more great skiing. Will be interesting to see how busy it gets with day trippers tomorrow. Will probably depend on whether the links are open and the state of the roads. Improved visibility will make more of the off piste accessible.

We had a great day, too, going between Carroz and Morillon. Covered lots of distance, but we're strictly on piste.
Thought we were the only people who saw the sun! Where we were on Sairon in Morillon it stopped snowing, the sun appeared at high intensity for about 10 minutes, then we were back to cloud and snow. It almost felt as if we'd imagined it, except that we have the photos.
Just looked out and still snowing quite heavily in Les Carroz.
Safe travels to those coming to join us tomorrow, looks like the perfect week to be here.

This morning started with blue skies and sunshine, as predicted by yr.no, and in contrast to the last few days. We went over to Flaine, where all but the middle section of Serpentine was still closed due to avalanche risk. Seemed odd to stand in the middle section and look up and see something that is usually a piste just look like part of the mountain.
By about 1.30 it was clouding up, so we headed back via Portet and by the time we got off the Molliets lift it looked pretty much the same as yesterday morning, with poor visibility and snow. It's now snowing heavily in Les Carroz, but hopefully started late enough for people to make it in without problems.

@Zorrac, Agreed, I've never had so much fun on the snow. With a guide this morning and we were making fresh tracks for three hours. Off the side of Faust, down Pente du Jules and across from the top of the Egg towards the Lapiaz drag. Started snowing again at about 1pm, still snowing now. Looks like tomorrow could be another epic day.

@Ghanny, Roads are ploughed, and just have small layer of slush and packed snow. If you have snow tyres, you will be fine.

@Ghanny, now stopped snowing in Les Carroz, so assume it will have done lower down, too, which means you should be fine.......and ready for a good day tomorrow! Even if visibility isn't great with yet MORE snow forecast for tomorrow, conditions will be superb.

2 quick questions that I don't think are worth their own thread, can someone tell me how expensive the car park above flaine foret is? Also any transfer companies that would do a thurs eve pickup from geneva and a return he following tues. I am trying to decide between a hire car or transfer for a long weekend in March.

This is the official answer on parking:
http://www.flaine.com/UserFiles/File/FLAINE_Circulation_2015.jpg
but is such poor quality that it's almost unreadable if you blow it up. I know that the first 12 hours is €2 from experience, and squinting hard suggests €5 per day beyond that. There is a free car park somewhere at the bottom of Flaine, so you could offload (1.5 hours for free) and then take the car there. Where are you staying, as some places have their own parking?
Sorry, can't help on transfers.

Can't help with parking but I can absolutely recommend Alpes Direct for transfers. Always there, always on time, and with locals for drivers they know the roads, the risks and the workarounds. The bad news is that they only do private transfers rather than shared, so on one hand it's not cheap (but if there's a few of you..) but on the other you won't have to wait.

@wam15, we used action transfers from Geneva to Flaine. They were very good and prompt. They do cover everyday of the week also.

We have used Go massif and Ski Lifts twice, both good, reasonable shared transfers I can recommend them.

You can download a clean copy of the parking plan from the Flaine website - look under "resort guide" & "documentation" - also gives the (supposed) times of the resort buses which can be handy

Some high cloud this morning but looks as though it could be a lovely day. Yesterday the vis in the Flaine bowl was poor above about 2,000m but we managed to get is some lovely runs under the Tetes de Verts chair making fresh tracks each time. The snow to the left of Tourmaline as you're coming down was largely untracked right until the end of the day but the powder was so deep that we sometimes ended up walking back to the piste.
On Sunday we skied right down to Morillon village, something I'd never done before. We took the blue run, which involved taking skis off to cross 2 roads but it was a lovely run. There is a 150m walk back to the telecabine at the bottom but the village looked beautiful, the church bells were ringing and fields of untouched snow. Perfect!

@Chris Mason, If you haven't tried them yet do take the red and black from Samoens to Vercland (the ancient bubble). In reality I would describe them as light red and red. Apart from being a bit scratchy at the start the conditions were epic on Sunday afternoon with no wind and good visibility. Le Repousette at the bubble well worth a pit stop as well.

@ian999, I did that run this afternoon. Much better than the last time I did it (last season sometime), snow decent all the way down. That bubble up really is a relic from the past - my twin tips had to be put in the board slots and I was seriously concerned that they were going to fall out. Great that they keep it going.
Highlight of the day was the opening of the Veret drag. 5/10 minute queue to get up there and make fresh tracks but well worth while. Did 3 circuits and it was interesting that the powder at the top was getting heavier as the sun got on it. Hazy sunshine all morning but great vis and it even felt warm. Took a layer off at lunchtime and regretted it. Far more cloud in the afternoon and by 4.30 the cloud had reduced vis to almost nothing.
Piste conditions still very good, off piste heavily tracked. Rumour is that Gers may open tomorrow, that would be a fantastic end to my 3 weeks out here.

Just a rumour, still closed yesterday.
Left Flaine this morning to begin journey back to London. Cloud covered the bottom of the bowl but sunny above it. Likewise Carroz when I drove through. Skiing yesterday was good but very, very cold. The on piste conditions are still very good, off piste is (inevitably) heavily tracked. Found some fresh powder dropping off the Diamant Noir traverse (opened yesterday) but have to be very careful because there are still many holes that have not yet filled with snow.
Weather forecast for coming week is cold but no snow. The next few weeks will see far more people on the slopes so the pistes are going to get worn if there is not more snow. That's it from me for at least 2 weeks, may get out again on 21 Feb. Have to do some work sometime!

Superb conditions today, and not too many people about. Flaine was sunny all day, but a cloud inversion climbed up through Les Carroz, leaving it a bit murky.
Happy to report that both Mephisto Superior and Gers bowl are now OPEN!
