A brief history of time ...
This thread was launched on 18 December 2012 to promote the "re-launched" Ski Club of Great Britain chat forum, and encourage use of that forum. Gotoma86 did the deed that day, and should be congratulated for his/her endeavours ...
Gotoma86 wrote: |
Wow, Ski Club of Great Britain have re-launched their chat forum and it looks good. Simple sign-up, you don't need to become a member plus they seem to have introduced profiles as well. Well this will be fun, who's going to jump ship and start using the Tea Club forum then?[/url] |
Gotoma86 wrote: |
In fact they have re-done their homepage and navigation, looks a lot more club focused and big drive for personal profiling.
I like it! |
Four-and-a-half years later, that SCGB forum (there are stated to be 29,000 members of the Club) has not had a single message posted since last Sunday 14 May. Are these people still alive? This 'level of activity' confounds the current front-page promotion on the SCGB website "Chat with other skiers on the Ski Club's Chat Forum".
This thread (alone) has had 22 messages (by 10 contributors) posted since last Sunday. OK, it's not exactly 'on fire' but it's also had somewhere between 1000-2000 hits in the past week.
The SCGB seems to have switched a chunk of its social media activity to Facebook, with specialised pages for meet-ups at specific ski resorts.
This is all very well, but what exactly is the strategy for the Ski Club of Great Britain right now, based on its own (rather than Facebook's) resources? Hopefully not asset-stripping (which is a potential result of the sale of the Wimbledon HQ) and further decline.
When a national club has reached a membership of around 2% of British skiers, perhaps there's potential for growth.
[end of rant]

@Davina Goldballs, have you thought about setting up a ski club, you seem to have the skills.
DGGB ski club is quite catchy may be admin could advise ( for a small undeclared amount) on settting up a chat forum.

@Norrin Radd, good idea, though I suspect it would only have 2 active posters, dg and gerry, though thinking about it again dg would probably pick a fight with dgadmin.

A good question. I am not sure you will ever get an answer though.
The potential member will no longer have reps to guide them around the slopes. Admittedly the club can employ others to do this, but members will pay an extra cost for this. Temptation may be to cut out the middleman.
Existing members may well stay because they are comfortable with what the club offers and are prepared to pay extra if necessary.
Age profiles and churn figures may be interesting to see.
The theory that the club was run for the benefit of the reps, who got paid holidays out of it, does not seem to hold water now either - if it ever did. Not much good being in a ski resort if you are not free to ski. 'Ambassadors' or whatever they are called now seem to have other duties that impinge on skiing time.
The theory that club is there to fund British competitive skiers is not convincing. Even if they do help some athletes financially on occasion.
My own hunch is the future is 'managed decline'.
Then full transformation into a niche holiday company.

The 'middleman' in this case is subsidising the cost and arranging for other people of similar ability to join. Cutting out the 'middleman' in your example will actually add cost and that cost could be big if you struggle to get others to go.

Badly Informed snowHeads have been saying the club is doomed for 13yrs. This place has had 13 years to catch up and overtake the Ski Club yet all it has to show for it is 50k registered members and a huge chunk of them are socks or have never even posted a single message. snowHeads markets itself as Ski Club 2.0* but is nothing like as good as the Ski Club (of GB). It all revolves around one guy and if he calls it a days or sells out then that's it.
Give it another 13yrs and snowHeads will either have evaporated into nothingness, been bought out and changed beyond all recognition or broken up into rival factions. Admittedly, if you like online cliques, sheeple, patronising old women, the veneration of lardiness and personality cults, then snowHeads is your bag.

I like the 'humour' of snowHead land, it's like a rejected Terry & June script. The vomit inducing tweeness of this place is hilarious in its own right, it really is. Have you ever laughed and vomited at the same time?
Actually, I did forget the sub catagory of 'getting shitface on vodka'. I don't know why your appearance made me think of that. But if you ever fancy a drinking contest against me (snowHeads -v- SCGB) you just let me know.

"Catch up and overtake the Ski Club?" I think you'll find that in terms of it's online presence as a skiing/snowboard related forum (which was it's original raison d'etre) it surpassed the SCGB website and left it in the dust years ago. Just compare the numbers and breadth of topics and skiing related information between the two sites.

Well leaving aside the fact that, as I understand it, a few years ago the SCGB threatened snowHeads with legal action over trademark infringement for their use of the phrase "Ski Club" (in spite of the fact that the SCGB trademark itself explicitly said that they did not hold any rights to the phrase "Ski Club" ) that is just your personal view. My personal view is that I was a member of SCGB for more than 20 years (and gained benefits from doing so), and subsequently was a member of both SCGB and snowHeads for a number of years, but have since decided to give up my SCGB membership as I now get more out my membership of snowHeads through the forum and the Bashes than from SCGB.

All I see here is a couple of hundred people who have reached critical mass for a forum. Nothing special about that. And of course this place is morally bankrupt. Case in point, DG's accusations of tax evasion had to be moderated away, (can't have that, what what, rattle of teacups!) while anyone else seems to be fair game as far as the bent moderation team are concerned. Also, there's no egalitarianism in here, unlike the Ski Club where everyone has an equal share, an equal opportunity and no bottom licking or clique joining is required, unlike here.
And that legal thing was stupid, I don't know what possessed them.

Still waiting for that one magazine issue they forgot to send. Just binned all the other advertorials the other day while spring cleaning.
Clubs in the traditional sense are history. Facebook and informal gatherings are where it's at.

Thanks for pointing that out. You make a good point, even if it is the "off season" for the north there is good early snow in South America and even snow in South Africa so still lots to talk about.
Clearly they lack a digital strategy (as you say). It is arguable that forums are not where it is at now but then why pimp it just at the start of summer? The forum relaunch needed much more attention. It's tricky, Graeme obviously started with a core from the old scgb but a forum also needs tlc.

Possibly, I was referring to your actual opinions of poles on building sites, I am not calling you a racist because of your political views which may or may not make you a racist, I agree that it was possible to vote for Brexit for many other reasons. So be the racist you are without the whinge that you are labelled one for voting Brexit.

@andy, I have no opinions on the scgb.

My views on Polish building workers are as follows:
1. They work as hard as the Brits.
2. They do just as good a job as the Brits.
3. They are generally very easy to work with, more so than a lot of Brits.
In fact those 3 points extend to the rest of the Eastern European building workers I have met. You are telling lies about me.

achilles, Why would they accept lower wages ? In our area there is a real shortage of engineers, although JLR have an impact. In the building industry the European migrants will typically accept lower wages because they are still much higher than they'd get at home. From what I heard talking to many of them they also seem happy to live in cheap digs. It's hard to compete with people who have such low expectations and indeed their presence had driven prices down in certain areas. Of course the developers are happy to cry 'skills shortage' and encourage a flooding of the labour market. I had a contract in Uxbridge last year and was one of the very few English trades working there. ^ A good case can be made that the UK economy benefits from hard working eastern europeans doing less glamorous jobs the locals don't want to do. If you want to sort low wages then bring in a minimum living wage rather than blame EU migrants ? UK unemployment is below the long term average. Or the other way to stop this unneeded influx of migrant building worker is to vote to leave the EU. When it comes to the building industry, we aren't talking about 'low paid jobs that the local don't want to do' or a traditionally low paid industry. An awful lot of people will look at the way the building industry has been ruined for them personally and will then vote accordingly.
