It's 22.30 Christmas day and the webcam clearly shows snow falling in Wengen, significant (30cm) snowfall still likely over the next 30 or so hours with more midweek, long range forecasts now indicating very little snow for the first week in Jan

Your wish is my comand
The forecast for today -
Monday up to 3cm of snow
Tuesday no significant snowfall
From late Tuesday untill early Thursday am up to 15cm of snow
Light snow will start Friday and continue through the whole weekend until tuesday up to about 15 cm
clear weather for a few days before a further few cm the following weekend
Weather for the next 3 days is fairly cerain the further you go beyond that the less reliable the forecast

Oh God I'm good,(see forecast above) 10cm of fresh snow fell last night in Wengen, mind you Murren got 25cm ... Ok so a further cm or 2 today then a couple of fair days till the weekend, Saturday may give a light covering of another couple of cm but more will follow on Sunday and or Monday up to about 15cm in Wengen seems likely at the moment, looking further into the future clear weather seems likely for the beginning of the new year however more snow may start to appear arround Sunday 9th of Jan with particularly heavy falls on Tuesday the 11th even so more than a further 45cm in the next 2 weeks seems unlikely at the moment. Murren as usual can expect a little more, Grindelwald will probably get a little less

Lucky so and so, yes if I were you I'd pack everything including the pistols, I notice that the lifts up to Eigergletscher are stll not running and the Falboden and Salzegg runs are still closed my guess would be that they have been stripped of some of their snow by the wind

Just read that there are TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES with the Murren-Birg-Schilthorn cable car, that's why it's closed.
Hope they get it fixed PDQ!

Thank's Alastair Pink, just what I needed, I'm still anticipating snow over Sunday and Monday combined with very cold temperatures so wrap up warm, snowfall is however unlikely to be much more than 15 cm in that 48 hour period, Wednesday and Friday next week look to have the best chance of clear skies at the moment, it will start to cloud over tonight or during Saturday, long range forecasts predict further light snow for the second week in January not exceeding 15 to 20 cm in total for that week

From Jungfrau Railways:
Attention:
The carrying cable of the Schilthorn Aerial Cableway between Mürren - Birg intermediate station requires urgent maintenance. Therefore the cableway from Mürren to the Schilthorn will remain closed until further notice.

Further to the above, there is a 30% reduction in the price of the Murren ski-pass for the duration of the maintenance. NB This is the Murren pass, not the Jungfrau Region pass.

Sounds like the cable is damaged, that means a new cable has to be made and strung then safety tests done, the time factor is weather or not they can get hold of a pre made cable that is suitable or if it has to be custom made I guess the stringing of a new cable only takes a couple of days of good weather

Alastair Pink, The last time Paul said something along those lines was when the Wengen cable car got hit by the avalanche, with no disrespect to him there are others whose estimates of time I would prefer, it really will depend if the cable company has any pre made cable or if they have to custom make something, my guess would I'm afraid be the latter, then it depends if they have a space in their production schedule, I'd guess a more accurate estimate of time may be available this time next week

D G Orf, My final met report (I am leaving Wengen on the 12:43 train to Lauterbrunnen). Temp at 10:00 am -2 deg celcius, pressure rising to 724mm Hg.
I called in at the Alpenrose to pick up leaflets on their accomodation packages for future information. I mentioned to Mrs Von Allman (I don't know her first name) that you were were often recommending it on Snowheads - she seemed well pleased to hear that you were promoting the hotel, so I think you will get a warm welcome when you arrive in a few weeks . I gather she is Scottish. My private ski instructor on Friday was Rudi Lanz who spent some years in Aviemore. Am I correct in thinking that these two people were once related i.e married?
Cheers

Alastair Pink, Mrs. Von Allmen's name is Margret (sp?) She arrived in Wengen many years ago and was working as a receptionist in I think the Silberhorn Hotel when her future husband and current owner of the Alpenrose Paul first met her, to my knowledge she was never married to anyone else, she comes from Bucky (sp?) in Scotland where here parents still live, Paul is from a long line of Von Allmens, and the Alpenrose has been in his family for well over 100 years, in fact it is the oldest hotel in the resort of Wengen.
I always get a warm welcome at the Alpenrose, weather I promote them or not
By the way Paul's sister another Margrit and her husband Erich run the Park hotel in Wengen

The local newspaper has an article today about the cable car, they're a bit vague about the nature of the damage but report that 53 people were evactuated by helicopter and the lift is expected to be out of operation for 3 to 4 weeks. I'll see if they have it online.

The time is near approaching to my trip to Wengen and there was considerable question to if I'd make it (fairly bad ski accident last week). At any rate...where is the best place to purchase lift tickets? I am not sure if there are advantages to doing this online vs. in person? Thanks!

More about the damaged cable here from NZZ Online
Quote: |
He added that it would take at least five weeks before a new cable could be installed and a regular service between Mürren and the Schilthorn resumed.
“We hope to have more details from the manufacturers in Austria in the next few days,” Feuz said.
The incident has left engineers perplexed, since the railway was given a complete overhaul just a year ago. |

nextascent, Any of the Stations from Interlaken Ost up, however if you can go in the afternoon or early evening before you want to ski you will have less time to wait, mornings can be very busy
Also be aware that there are 3 regions you can get ski passes for (Jungfrau Top covers whole area but separate passes for just Wengen and Grindelwald areas and Schilthorn areas (see above for news on that one) plus there are different age catagories from over 62's to 6's and under
Weather report
Light snow possible for today but not much, next week should remain fairly cold, clearest weather will probably Friday and Saturday
a few flakes of snow on Sunday, Tuesday and next Thursday also look possible but nothing significant until Friday 21st (not reliable)

Latest on the Murren - Schilthorn cableway. The Schilthornbahn are now reporting that the cableway will re-open on 12th March. Until then the local Murren pass will continue to be offered at a 30% discount.

Ok well I thought 5 weeks was optimistic, it's possible with good weather and a lot of luck they might manage to get it done earlier but I would not be surprised if it does not get fixed till the summer, you have to appreciate that the cables they use are not just bought off the shelf, they consist of hundreds of individual wires each of which has to pass quality control checks, these are then put into thin cables which themselves are tested before being combined into a single cable, this has to be tested before the whole thing is sheafed in a weatherproof and incredibly tough outer coating (the part that apparently failed).this then has to be attached to the existing cableway and because it's the support cable the cable car must be removed first it will then be tested the cable car re mounted and tested again, bear in mind that daytime temperatures at teh Schilthorn in wintertime can drop bellow -20C and winds can excede 70mph and you begin to appreciate what a dangerous job it will be to replace that cable in winter, I'm actually surprised that they are even considering it due to the risks involved, normally these things are done in the summer for very good reasons

Ok and now for the Forecast, the coming week will tend to be clear with the current warm wether hopefull gradually cooling, possibly a light snow shower or two on Thursday but it's unlikely to be more than a cm or 2 at most, however the long range forecast for the following week looks increasingly promising with up to 65cm of snow (though more probably 45cm) likely to fall between next Sunday and the following one, however as with all forecasts at this distance in time things can and frequently do change
