Arms, and anyone who wants it, you can now download a partial 3D PdS lift/piste map from https://cid-cc870dc63154a0f5.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/PDS%20map/PdS%203D%20piste%20maps.kmz thanks to Llew for hosting the file.
Just click on this link then click on the file icon. It should download and automatically open in Google Earth. You might need the latest version but if you haven't just download it from earth.google.com.
Note the caveats above, but hopefully it should make planning a day around the area a bit easier.

Just back from Les Gets - fabulous blue skies and immaculate pistes! I also put all the menu's online for the La Grande Ourse restaurant on Mont Chery, I can confirm that they are willing to do a full English breakfast - if you get there early enough They are also twittering the latest weather on the top, might be worth a look follow them as @lagrandeourse or look in the side bar on their website http://www.lagrandeourse.eu/

I was telemarking in Morzine / Les Gets.
Great snow coverage everywhere I went. You really can't fault it.
Conditions were a little icy for my telemarking skills early on, but they softened up nicely in the afternoon.
Great pistes. Surprisingly uncrowded pistes. A few 5 minute lift queues, but nothing to complain about.

Conclusive proof at last! Always wear a helmet!
Imagine the scene ...
A well-known snowhead and frequent visitor to Morzine is 'leading' his group after a particularly nice lunch in Les Gets. He hesitates for just a moment, stops and turns to make sure he has his whole group is with him. Unfortunately, he has done this just in front of the dismount from a drag lift. Cue moment of perfect timing, skier dismounts and releases button. Accompanied by a sound familiar to Radio 4 listeners as 'Big Ben', button strikes said snowhead's helmet. (Which, by the way, should now be replaced after its first major accident!). Nuff said, you heard it here first. At least one snowhead always needs to be wear a helmet.

What this - the whole geetee family surfing at the same time? Don't you guys have lives? And why doesn't geeteejr have a login yet
(Lovely thank you. Although I had a bit of a tough day telemarking. You could light a BBQ with my quads...)

FlyingStantoni, have already sent an email to Cheeky Monkeys and will hopefully book some lessons in the next couple of weeks (possibly while we're over there!) Of course, if you're volunteering. We all know that geeteejr loves skiing with her Uncle P.

geeteejr is always welcome to ski with me - as long as she doesn't mind me being MrSLOWcoach on my telemarks!
But ask yourself one thing. Do you want me teaching geeteejr anything?

It's ok, I've decided to find an opportunity to tuck away a really embarrassing photo. One that she'll hate on her wedding day.

andyph, that is excellent, the lines seem really faint when I look at it, any way to make the overlay brighter in the settings or anything. Really shows how much we skied in our last trip, thank you!

ski-finder, not sure why that would be, they seem pretty bright to me. There might be some settings you could try changing in Tools>Options. Maybe try looking at it on someone else's PC?
geofones, have you tried loading your GPS trails into Google Earth? I'd be interested to see how close my guesses at the Super-Morzine pistes match reality. I've never bother to ski down from Avoriaz (I usually drive to Prodains or Ardents).
Arms, are you heading home on Saturday? If not, I've got a cheeky weekend in Les Gets 7th-9th - meet up for a quick beer and/or ski if you're still around?

andyph & Llew,
That's a great tool guys, well done!
I have a couple (only a couple) of gps tracks around Les Gets from a couple of weeks ago if you're interested.
PM me if you want them.

Arms, hey ho, next time... Looks like some snow heading your way tomorrow - let us know how it turns out. I don't like the look of these warmer temps and what it might do to the avalanche risk. Just save some freshies for Saturday...

Morzine and Les Gets pistes were getting a bit worn and scratchy by the end of last week. Avoriaz seemed to be faring a little better.

Things were looking pretty good on Saturday in Morzine / Les Gets - even on the high traffic areas that do normally get thin.

Probably not... I think we were maybe just unlucky finding the scratchy bits.
Spring conditions seemed to be apparent on Mt Chery, which was weird for Jan. Top of one of the black runs said 'danger ice!' (except in French) and what we actually found was quite heavy wet snow.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Mt Chery was great on Sunday and we covered all the runs over there - apart from the Bouquetin (sp.?) - and it was all fine then. Les Gets and Morzine also in good condition today and it turned out to be much sunnier than anticipated - made it difficult to get back to the chalet for domestic tasks and packing up before returning to the UK on Wednesday!
|
|
|
|
|
|
I had a look over the edge of Bouquetin last week, bottled it, and had to cut through some trees into the terrain park instead

paulio, which black said danger ice but heavy and wet? Both blacks off the top of the chair are North-ish facing and we're lovely 3 weeks ago (not that that means anything)...

When I was in Morzine 2w ago I did Chavanette (The Swiss Wall), Chamossiere, & Bouquetin (I think you're right Pamski) on different days (as well as a few other blacks). I found Bouquetin the hardest run I did all week. Legs just went completely mushy abt 1/3 of the way down & struggled all the way after that. Not helped by the chairlift going staight over your head. It was quite steep. Legs just not used to sustained steep pitch, in Scotland you can usually see the end & get the burning thighs to do 1 or 2 more turns...and relax.
