Back in wet / sleety morzine after a decent day skiing up mozettes lift and avoriaz bowl. Not too hideously busy for NYE but big queue (expected) at Tour and as ever lifties allowing 2-4 on the six pack.
Started a flurry of snow as we descended back to linderet then hard rain as we were in ardent but that got replaced by hard snow soon after down to ardent level. Good news.
Can anyone comment if snow or rain at les gets and nyon slopes?

@MHskier, snowing in Les Gets and the snowline is just above Morzine village on Pleney webcam. So would assume Nyon will be getting snow (as will the bottom of the Super M runs).

Eventually made it to Morzine mid afternoon after a shambolic geneva airport experience. Took the guts of an hour to get through immigration.
It’s been a miserable afternoon in morzine. A mix of rain, sleet and the occasional snow flurry. However, as others have reported the snow line was probably better than expected. Looking very wintry just above village level. Tomorrow should be good.

Snow started mid-mountain on Linga at about 13:30 and it reached Cjatel village at around 15:00 where it has not stopped snowing - estimating around 10cm on the balcony so far. There are reports of a 4 car crash just below Pre La Joux car park stopping cars from leaving the area.

@Innescal89, an hour to get thru passport control in Geneva for Brits in (one of? or the) the busiest Saturdays of the season is fantastically good going! Various friends and relations in recent weeks have typically been looking at 90 mins to over 2 hours

Interesting, I get into Geneva at 9.40am and there are buses to Morzine at 11am and 2pm. I think I could miss the 11am bus in that case.

@Ram80, it really depends on which flights are landing before you - if you follow an Emirates flight in then it’ll be mega-busy, or if there are half a dozen UK flights arriving (say on a Saturday morning) then you have the same problem. Have a look at arrivals on the GVA website - from memory I think Emirates tend to land in the evening, but the Ethiopian flight that stops off at GVA en route for Manchester is morning but not every day.
We generally arrive 8-9pm and with a sharp exit off the plane I don’t think we’ve waited more than 15 minutes or so (despite the EJ Manchester flight invariably being at C63 - the furthest gate from passports!).

I have mostly positive experiences of Geneva - always in winter, arriving midweek and departing on Saturdays, but in low season ski weeks.
Midweek arrivals have always been pretty quick with negligible queues. Departures have been busier (with EasyJet, long queues but always move quickly - I think they've redesigned the layout this year to improve things though); unless your flight is very early or late in the day I'd consider arriving more than 2 hours before your flight departs.
My single bad experience was when we used Jet2 to return to the UK. We were directed to a different terminal for bag drop and security with enormous queues. After bag drop we skipped the security queue by walking back to the main terminal, going through security there, and transferring back to the correct area airside.

Flew to GVA four or five times last season, never during peak weeks and never on a Saturday, typically landing early afternoon. Always had lengthy queues, certainly way longer than I was used to after many years of flying in to the airport. Longest queue was 60+ minutes, on a Sunday in early January (at the same time if I'd had an EU passport there was essentially zero queue using the e-gates) . Guess it's the new normal. Will see what the experience is next weekend.
Always travel with hand luggage so no worries about checking in at GVA when flying back to the UK, and never had to queue for passport control on the way out.

|

You know it makes sense.
|
@rob@rar, the new normal hopefully only until October when we should all be on e-gates!
Having just had a look it seems Emirates have a 1245 and an 1845 arrival each day - so definitely to be avoided if possible! Qatar, Ethiopian and Ethiad all seem to be very early morning arrivals.

Makes no difference when leaving GVA as it's the same queue. I've been held up there too and nearly missed a flight.
Arriving in GVA, résidence permit holders can (unofficially) take the EU/Swiss queue as your passport doesn't need to be stamped. Can't use the automatic gates though.

If you’re flying out of C gates there’s a separate line for EU/CH passport holders (which I assume is where the CdS folks go?). As with coming in, it’s almost always empty.

Hopefully you have a better experience than I did. Although sounds like I might have been lucky only queuing for an hour. Collecting bags was also a shambles due to the delay and customs as well.
Conditions this morning were first class after yesterday’s snow. Things got a little icy and bumpy in the afternoon and some of the lower stuff was extremely slushy. Unsurprisingly the ski area was mobbed today which meant some more lengthy queues for me!

After hearing of plenty of snow last night went to Nyon telecabin at 9:30 for a completely crowd free start on New Year’s Day! Just 2 others on the lift then quite and great snow from the top viewpoint. Laps off the top of Rosta and Ranfoilly in partial sun and lovely conditions then over to LesGets before heading back. Fantastic day on slopes that I don’t know as well as Avoriaz and Linderets. Feeling v lucky.

Looking like the first proper cold spell of the winter is on its way from next weekend - and hopefully some valley level snow to precede it on Saturday. With a bit of luck they can get a base on some of the home runs to see them through the season - Piste B down from Pleney stayed open pretty much all year after it finally snowed in early Jan.

For 4 days I’d personally just go with M/LG. There’s about 150km of runs which is plenty for 4 days.
Make sure to head over into LG and get the land train (takes 2 mins) to Mont Chery (but don’t tell anyone about it when you get home). The lift system is a bit rickety, but the skiing is well worth it.

@Skyeblue39, if it was me I'd have two days of each. There is plenty around Morzine / Les Gets but it would be a pity to miss out on the other bits. One day from Prodains (or Super Morzine) to cover Avoriaz and the Swiss side, one day from Ardent for Chatel (and Torgon/La Chapelle if you have an early start)
|
|
|
|
|
|
Great thanks for that so you know if I got the lesgets morzine pass for the 4 days can you upgrade at the offices for a day if we decide that we wanted to go up into Avoriaz
|
|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
I'm not sure about upgrades. I tend to buy passes day-by-day as the local ones are so much cheaper than the PDS (and if you have a late start the 5 hour pass saves a bit). Once you have a card you can buy on line so no need to queue at a ticket booth.

@Skyeblue39, no, not economically - and the Avoriaz lift pass office can’t do it - so you’d need to go to Pleney to get a day’s refund, then buy a PdS day pass which will cost quite a lot extra. Better to either buy a PdS pass for the whole trip or decide when you want to go and buy passes as required.

With the current snow conditions below 1500m I would hang on until you arrive. If conditions stay as they are you'll need a PDS pass.

@Skyeblue39, what’s the difference in price for 4 days? I’ve just bought my daughter a 4 day PdS pass for next weekend (12/1/24) and it was €205 (she’s U26). If there’s not much in it I’d get PdS - intermediate/advanced skiers staying in Morzine will be missing out if you don’t get up to Lindarets and over to Chatel (and Switzerland if conditions are good).

It can often be unnecessarily slow & busy for us CH passport holders too as for some reason they don't always open the e-gates, or if they do under-18s can't use them so we have to join the slow queue (albeit quicker than the non-EU/CH queue).

So meteoblue was right not the bbc forecast. The wind on top ridges was pretty full on with mossettes lift shut. We beat a hasty retreat back from PLJ to linderets in case they closed Rochassons. Top of Grandes Combes was like a hurricane, probably the most extreme wind I’ve skied in. Forecast is for more of the same for another 36 hrs which is a shame as bucketing down with new snow high up. V wet at Ardent and below level.
Thursday looks brighter and people coming next week should have it set perfectly conditions wise.

So just me and youngest (who has really come on with his technique and looking v accomplished on quite tricky reds now if you’ll allow me a proud dad moment) out tomorrow. Can access ardent, super morzine, prodains or Nyon as a start point. Ideally I wanted to show him Swiss side eg Les Crosets, etc but thinking this may not be possible or carry a high risk of being stranded over there if the wind is v high again.
Any recommendations for a good area for avoiding sw winds?

Only managed 1 x Combes and 1 x Cornebois chair rides before retreating to laps of the PLJ chair via TK Keyset while kids were at ski school. Should clear tomorrow afternoon before more snow at village level Wednesday evening in time for Thursday. Meteo Blue is now my favoured weather site for Châtel.
