Flying out early tomorrow and hopefully in La Plagne centre by lunch time. Looking forward to what I’m expecting to be wall to wall sunshine for the next few days and plenty of piste cruising on the skis and a bit of side piste on the snowboard. Hopefully glacier lifts will open over the weekend so we can head up there for the first time.

Has the new cable up to the glacier changed anything? Is it open any more often?

Thanks for the update, @boredsurfin - so it'll be closed for 3 days out of the 6 when we come out in a week or so. Bit of a shame, but we haven't gone up there in the last few years anyway, so it would have been more out of curiosity than for the ski runs!

Big sun in the sky, relatively few people about, excellent snow conditions. I am and everyone around now here is very lucky.
Difficult training this morning, to say the least. So, let's relativise, things are good, I'm incredibly grateful to be here, skiing on my awesomely prepared GS skis, in these conditions, fully healthy, training for a wonderful goal that once seemed impossible but in less than 2 weeks time I will go through the start at the Eurotest of Les Menuires.

Evening snowHeads, looking for some advice ...
Heading to La Plagne in early Feb, staying at Odalys in Plagne Villages
Because of flight times (to Lyon) I've to rent a car which I haven't done one any previous ski trips, I've no experience of using snow chains (not needed in Ireland!)
Will I be able to drive to Plagne Villages, do they keep the road there open to cars through the season?
Should I request snow chains from the rental company and have them put them on in advance or would I be okay without? |
I've done the fly/drive via Lyon a number of times - easyJet/EuropeCar or similar. Always booked chains, sometimes they were provided but equally there were times when the desk clerk's response was "Desolet Monsieur - hypermarche?". Perhaps with Loi Montagne the car hire firms are now a bit more responsible.
I've driven to Plagne Villages on numerous occasions, Jan-Mar - the local authority seem pretty good at keeping the road up from the valley clear of snow, throughout the week but especially so on Saturdays.
Parking is available but be aware of days when they're doing carpark snow clearance - I very narrowly avoided having my car towed by the local police (they do post notices but they'd started earlier than the posted time and were just getting the tow truck lift under my wheels as I was attempting to "sprint" across the road - fortunately I was treated to a ribbing about taking too long over a relaxed breakfast!)

The City of Lyon and Lyon Airport are not concerned by Loi Montagne as their are out of Loi Montagne Area. So if you rent a car there, providing chains from the agency is just a good will.

Nice first day today but as busy as I’ve seen for January. Hopefully tomorrow the crowds will have moved on.

Apparently quite of lot of university groups in La Plagne at the moment. The crowds were sporadic though, seemed busier at Bellecote compared to centre and over towards Montalbert. Clouds filled in about lunch time following a sunny morning and the light went pretty flat when I was on a lesson this afternoon. Expecting a bit of snow overnight and in to the morning. Last day on the snow tomorrow so plan on making the most of it.

Probably about 5-10cm of settled snow overnight and steadily snowing most of the day, but coming down harder at times. Visibility not great as you’d expect but I’d guess another 10-15cm through the day.
And whilst not conditions-related, we ate at Le Petit Comptoir in Plagne Centre last night, excellent food and service. Highly recommended.

@boulevardier, @Layne, @Jo225, Thank you so much for the kind messages!
Sunday was a gorgeous bluebird morning, with 2 GS runs in a mock competition on the stade in Plagne Centre.
Yesterday had quite flat light. It snowed on and off in the morning and then decently from lunchtime into the evening. Some snow was on the road last night from about halfway in between Aime and Bellecôte.
This morning was gorgeous again: sunny, lovely grippy snow, in my 4 GS runs on the stade in Plagne Centre. We continued in the afternoon but the clouds came in at 12.30 and so visibility was a bit more challenging. It remains a bit cold, so the biggest part of lunchtime was spent inside.

Eurgh rain is so depressing in a ski resort isn’t it! If only the freezing level was 500m lower it would be an amazing dump of snow over the next 36 hours!

Question for those in La Plagne experts. As you come in to Plagne Centre from above Plagne Villages on a little blue piste through the trees, Calle Les Croes I believe, there’s some chalets hidden in the trees on right just before the piste opens up on to the Plagne Centre front itself - does anyone know which company operates these chalets? Always thought they’re a decent location….

Snow today, but the very heavy wet kind.
The opening of the chairlifts in Bellecôte was delayed untill approximately 9.30/35. It's less sticky than yesterday morning, but it has snowed more and it remains quite heavy.
I quit very early on to save some energy. Tomorrow should be a good training day. Saturday GS competition in 2 runs on the stade of Plagne Centre, sunday last training in Belle Plagne and then it's off to Les Menuires.

Well, weather forecasts, all the ones I know, got this morning wrong.
It's snowing, and cloudy. Meant to be sun and clear. Not complaining.
And they did get the temperature right: very cold.
Snowed all night, trees and roads white. Could be tricky driving.
But should be brilliant skiing.

@Jonpim, Exactly. Colosses 9.30, Blanchets and Arpette opened a little before 10am. Pida blasting all morning. Up untill 11.15ish the stade de Belle Plagne was a polar expedition where you did not know which way was up or down or left or right. 3 runs of which 2 had decent light before lunchtime.Trying to find layers to add for this afternoon

The afternoon was slightly better in visibility. The snow was very soft though so lots of slipping and big ruts.
Tomorrow I'll participate in a GS competition to get some more start gate feelings. It should be a wonderful day... Which is kind of how I initially announced today was going to be. Fingers crossed.

chopkins13, relax. La Roche is way down the hill. Here at 1800, the temperature is dropping and It's snowing. A bit of sunshine for a few days is not going to ruin your fun in February.

From memory La Roche is at about 1500m, so pretty much as low as you can go in La Plagne except for the base at Montchavin or Montalbert. Like @Jonpim says, I’d not worry as it’s easy to avoid going that low down.

Yes la Roche is pretty low, so nothing to worry about. We went for dinner at plagne 1800m and it was sleet at best for most of the night. But hopefully that will mean plenty of snow up high.
Just a bit of a shame as it was chucking it down with snow down at 1500m at 4pm, we thought as it got later and colder more would follow but not yet.

We had a slightly anxious time getting back from Les Arcs yesterday.
We were waiting for the Vanoise at 3.15pm. Watched it coming over from La Plagne side when it suddenly stopped half way. Nothing happened for a bit, then we heard doors slam above us as a man came scurrying out of the control room. Then we saw a boot. He had climbed along where the cables come in and was kicking at the covers as he went. Then he rushed back in,. Eventually we heard the beep- beep- beep, and the lift was moving again. A bit of a delay.
Then across to the lift up to Plan Bois to find the chair up to Dos Rond wasn't running. Had to ski down to Pierre Blanche chair. A tricky icy run. Big delay. Clock was ticking towards 4.20pm when Crozats shut.
Drag up then ski down a very empty piste to Crozats. Think we got the last chair.
Colosses had closed when we got to Bellecote, so it was the bus home.
They don't take prisoners in that bus queue. When the bus arrives its Charge! And no mercy. Managed to get on the second bus. Sardined all the way home.
Quite a day.
