@adriangrogan, Been out skiing so missed this conversation but details of which chairs/gondys you can use is here:
https://www.tignes.net/ski/a-chacun-son-forfait/forfaits-pietons
Toviere is good for the views and a coffee the restaurant is not up too much. To quote Tigski today, its the worst meal I have had in years. For THE view then Funiculaire and GM Cable Car. The cafe is good but a bit pricy, the Resto, take somebody else's wallet! Lo Soli at the top of Chaudannes is good as is the cafe and the terrace is in the sun all day, providing they are active enough to get on and off a chairlift. The navettes around Tignes 2100 and down to Boisses are free, they might enjoy the level walk across the top of the Dam and there's a couple of nice places in Boisses/1800. Don't think paying to go to Brev is worth it.

Thank you (hope you had a good day). Great information. Not worried about the price of food as we have a couple of coeliacs in the group so we cook in the apartment at night. It's just easier! So we'll usually manage the price of a coffee and a chocolate bar on the mountain. Speaking of coeliacs, I have noticed that there is a new café - Oxygene cafe in Le Lac advertising gluten free sandwiches. And A la Creperie Bretone advertises gluten free pancakes. Any comments on the quality of either place? Ta

Scorchio (for Feb). By 2pm it was 8 degs in the shade on my balcony, so there has been quite a lot of consolidation in the snow, so a warm day of cruising round the pistes which are much improved thanks to the new snow. There was also some nice pockets of new snow around Genepy so a few dozen turns of fresh tracks. The quiche at Rosies is as good as ever. The sky was virtually clear early on but the veil of cloud built through the daay I then came back to do the PLF, a mouse clicking pain.
First thing to note is the Vi risk rises to 3 tomorrow above 2300m thanks to the wind and temperature changes.
Also the forecast has changed a bit on Sunday, instead of a few flakes there might be a 10-12cm freshen up before the high pressure re-establishes itself. Tomorrow will be a bit cooler but the sun will be out and a few fluffy clouds will appear. These will thicken after dark and we will have a few flocons in the very small hours. There'll be a few clouds around on Saturday morning but they will clear to leave a nice day for sitting in traffic jams. It will feel a bit cooler. Sunday will start with sunny spells and cloude but there will be a wind above 300m or so. This wind will build through the day and snow should fall in the evening in to early Monday. The confidence in Mondays forecast is not high, currently windy with snow showers, maybe sleet in Brev. Its a funny old weather pattern, there will bechanges.
Right off to L'Arti tonight, report tomorrrow!

@adriangrogan, The Carrefour Montagne supermarket on Rue de la Poste had fresh gluten-free bread as well as the usual sealed stuff a few years ago. The Gerblé brand is in several of the supermarkets too.

@adriangrogan, There are a couple of sunny terraces in Le lac you could utilize to meet for coffees etc. without the need to use the lifts. And you can ski to within a few metres of them. Escale Blanc, L 'Arbina and Les Terrasses (all visible if you check out the 'Lac webcam). Places like the Loop Bar and Tignes Cuisine also get the sun but will be rammed at lunch time. There are also places in the Palafour Gallery that have terraces overlooking the Lake but are generally under utilized but that's perhaps because they aren't as accessible to skiers.

Its a longer drive from the UK thats for sure... also if you are more interested in missing traffic then you'll find that its after Chambery that the traffic will build up - in fact Albertville onwards really so doesn't matter how you get to Albertille route wise!

A successful night was had at L'Arti in Lavachet. Its a limited menu (4 starters, 6 mains, 4 puds) and about 2/3 is vegan/veggie. So given the choice not the quality I probably won't go again unless they change the menu. But for those with plant based folks its a good choice. Wines a bit top end mind!
Another bright and sunny day, so I did a bit of cleaning ahead of the early departure I went out for a couple of hours, but I was wondering why one of those big plastic 'jugs' of washing liquid leaked over my absence. Luckily it had set so out with the wallpaper scraper! The pistes were generally in good nick and the 'Snake' is just about finished now at the top end of the Grattalu Park. Its a cross between a park, a bendy half pipe and one or two obstacles for a boarding competition next week called Ride the Snake. Not sure if that's a euphemism
But a group of 5 had a bit of an escape today, we saw some tracks from Genepy over the flat bit that lead to the cliffs with no way down on the Petite Balme. As we came onto Prariond they were getting close to the edge, I had just alerted an ESF guy when they turned round, for the long walk back.
The sky will cloud later and there may be the odd flocon tonight, but by morning it will be bright and sunny all day. Sunday will start the same but by lunchtime high cloud will arrive with gusty winds (an eye on the links folks) and by dark it will be snowing. This snow will continue into Monday morning with very strong winds. There should be about 15-20cm of snow so with the wind the pisteurs are going to be busy, it will be a progressive start. Monday afternoon should clear to sunny spells and a wind at altitude. The high pressure then builds and it looks like unbroken sunshine for Tuesday and Wednesday, and really warm again for the time of year with teh freezing level well above the Motte on Wed.
Tomorrows fliers (like me) shouldn't see many problems but there will be gusty showers in the UK, if you catch one it will be a bumpy ride. Over here all good with teh exception of a slim chance of mist at Chambery, but barely worth delaying for I would think. They are expecting 26k cars going down and 32k coming up, so yes there will be slow traffic from around 11am, but its about 6k off the peak so not horrendous given the benign conditions.
Right my bus is an early one so I'm off to bed!

Definitely should have gone through Grenoble. Left Lyon at 10 and arrived in VDI at 17:30 with a single splash and dash pit stop. Where A41 joined A43 seemed to be running fine.

@brovert, Maybe everyone who would have taken the A41 is still stuck in Grenoble. Think I would have gone north from Lyon then D1504.

Coming into the valley after Albertville and towards Moutiers there is a set of lights and then there can be bungs between moutiers into Bourg... usually after Bourg it'll be OK (as long as there isnt snow then it can still be bad after that). Leaving the valley then before the Sioux tunnel between Bourg in direction of Moutiers is the usual snarl up!

@Mother hucker, yeah saw that. The local off piste instructors are still worried about the layer created a few weeks ago when it rained heavily up to 3000m. It may be a danger till the end of the season.

Sure, but brovert wouldn't have avoided that by going via Grenoble, their description suggested to me that they had been delayed between Lyon and Chambery. I just wouldn't expect Grenoble to be better, I have been there on the equivalent weekend in previous years, I would have tried the D1504.

Well a slow start with all the new snow and wind, 22cm - should keep the pistes nice for another week.
But the big news which will be the cause of huge celebrations on Rue de la Poste is Johan Clarey's silver medal in the Olympic men's downhill. At 41 that's a remarkable achievement, a shame it wasn't a gold for what must be the twilight of his career, but then like a good wine he seems to get better with age. His Dad serviced my skis last week!

@rjs, We did travel via the D1504 and although progress was initially good it rapidly deteriorated as more people diverted. Spoke to someone who left Lyon on a coach at 10:30 and they arrived an hour before us. As this is a well known diversion once routes become saturated I’m not sure it will save any time.

Hoping to finally be back in Val 1st week April (deferred from April 2020!).
Not visited since 2019 and imagine things have changed since then...
So looking for some up to date recommendations for lunches please .
And also a good raclette in the evening .
Maybe three lunch spots on the mountain for longer group days out.
Possibly nearer to Val than Tignes please as some slow skiers in our group and table service preferred but happy to make a longer trip if somewhere highly recommended.
And three in town for lunch after ski school meet ups .
For an evening raclette - we tried Le Casserole last time and it wasn't great despite being quite expensive (and it has subsequently closed anyway?).
L'Avancher looks very nice - but says they grill the cheese in the kitchen which kind of takes away some of the fun...?

that all sounds naughty. would the rain that fell earlier in the season not consolidate the snow pack with the cold temps that followed?
|
|
|

I think that might depend on elevation. Perhaps below 1800m it might have percolated through to help stabilise but at higher altitudes even today I can see rain crust everywhere much of which seems hollow beneath and depth hoar (sugar snow) below. Last night's snowfall looks like a complete mess on top, pretty much all of it having been wind blown and deposited very compact in hollows. That was my view from the lifts and piste, perhaps others can offer more insight from any off piste forays today.

A quick weather update from the UK Weather Office. High pressure will dominate until Thursday which will be followed by the passage of a weakening cold front on Friday, the timings of which are are a little unclear, so today, Wed and Thu will see virtually unbroken sunshine, maybe the odd small cloud on the peaks. Tomorrow will be super warm for early Feb with the freezing level way above the Motte, much sun tan lotion and beers on the terrace. Thursday will be a bit cooler. The models are struggling for detail on Friday as the front is slowing and weakening, the best guess is for it to cloud over in the morning and light snow from lunchtime, which may or may not extend into Sat morning. As for the amounts, currently just a few cm. The long term forecast looks a bit more promising for a snowy week next week providing the Azores high does not move further North and pushes the unsettled weather away from the Alps.

Saturday you may be fine, as most people will be parked on the D902. Sunday may be trickier... Overflow parking is usually allowed during busy weeks on the right of the road as you approach Brev, before the town sign. Please do read the update on Brev parking on page 1 @Mother hucker.

If anyone's got similar advice for Tignes that would be amazing. Specifically for the "lunch after ski school" question. We're taking the kids for their first time skiing and Tignes is a new resort to me - mostly Courchevel, Avoriaz, Selva and Whistler (all pre-kids).
Many thanks

Sit down lunch after ski school - Bagus Café on Rue De La Poste does a good tartiflette; if you're in Val Claret I rate the pizza at Pépé 2000, and La Pignatta always used to be good. Plenty to choose from though I haven't been for 2 years (along with just about everyone else). I expect our resident snowHeads will have more up to date info
