Was due to drive out today - in fact we would have just been driving off Eurotunnel at the time of typing this. Absolutely gutted. First time in 30 years I’ve not skied. Thoughts are with everyone at this time.

What's the word on ski touring? Is it still allowed to hike up or would that be illegal now?

@Jodiug, I think it will be discouraged as in Italy. They want the emergency services to be able to concentrate their efforts not have to deal with problems up the mountain. However a few if us here will do some easy stuff together.

Anyone any idea if Altibus transfers are still running back to Geneva from here. We’re booked for tomorrow, but omninously all bus times in the booking but are showing as “unavailable”

We were lucky in as much as we got the message not to travel to the airport about 10.00 last night. People who went out on Saturday will have had the journey for nothing and might be in trouble getting back. Feeling a little sorry for ourselves as we were hoping for one last ski before Bev has her ankle surgery, which will probably make it impossible in future. Even more sorry for the people of La Plagne, whose only source of income is the mountain. More than anywhere, La Plagne is a special community and facing hard times. Sorry also for the seasonal staff, who now find themselves out of work. Bev spoke to Veronica (I think it was) at the Graciosa last night, and she was a stunned by the closure as we were, especially after the brave words of the previous day. Best wishes to all at La Plagne.

@Chris Bish, Here here!
Our friends that run the bar next door, look shell shocked as they have also heard that the concession restaurant they run on a lake in Summer will not open this year
I rather think many many small French bars/restaurants will go to the wall over this, if we have the same in the UK it will decimate the independent Pub small restaurant and Hotel sector

Can’t believe it’s come to this! Obviously makes complete sense from a national perspective but absolutely devastating for all in La Plagne.
Perhaps the best thing we can do is start booking up for next year and paying some deposits to see everyone though.

That's interesting. Do you know what sort of refund they are offering for season pass holders?
|
|
|
|

@rob@rar, No idea, there are also sections for claiming when certain lifts have broken down. It will be interesting to see what we get.

Thanks. I hadn't thought to claim, assuming that for season pass holders they'd not offer a refund if a certain proportion of the season had passed. But if they are offering partial refunds I'll submit a claim.

Was due in La Plagne first week of April, sadly not now the case. Thoughts are with everyone in the resort at the moment, either trying to get home or running a business there. Shout out to El Pro ski school who we'd booked with for lessons, on the phone at 10am this morning to say obviously the lessons won't be happening and can they have some card details to process the refund. I thought that was incredible service when the rest of their season is now in tatters.

Agreed. But with the lift company and the local community collectively losing money this year, and no certainty that next year won't be even worse (possibly no season at all), the prospects for repair, or for any other planned upgrades, may be put back some years.

That is great customer service. Word of mouth is powerful, so hopefully they'll be rewarded in the coming months. I seem to have hit a brick wall with Oxygene, but hopefully they'll come through but if not El Pro will be jumping up to the top of the list for next year.

Hi @Handy Turnip, are you expenses not covered by your travel insurance?
I would have thought that would be your first call. If everyone claims for the 3rd of the season left there won’t be any ski schools.

@Charliee, the travel insurance will need me to explore all options first. All I want is a bit of customer service - if they write to me saying that they can't refund me, and the reasons why then I'll have much more sympathy than being ignored. They've got the benefit of the doubt for now, but how they behaviour when the chips are down will go a long way to informing me where i spend my money next year.
As an aside ... are insurance companies immune from going bust?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Handy Turnip, I’d rather the odd insurance company took some pain than a service company in the ski resort go out of business! After all the ski season was cut short by almost a 3rd and that it until such time as we can play again!
The insurance company can still function, while the ski industry is dead - I’m certain Oxygene will reply ASap, they are a great company, but a small one when it comes to dealing with 100’s of cancelations.

I suspect that some companies who specialise in travel insurance may disappear. They probably won't get any more income for a year. Once they have dealt with the current confusion claims staff may be laid off, but even then there will still be some overhead costs.

Very possible -- my annual travel insurance is due next week, but I will not be renewing as I have no holidays planned. Only one renewal, but how many more?

I took out an annual policy for the PreBbash, so would be covered for the rest of the year, IF I could go anywhere .
I booked and paid for next year on return, before the proverbial hit the fan. Technically, I am covered for cancellation of the holiday up until 3 days before. Hopefully, I won't have to test the policy.
I understand from other threads, that new annual policies exclude Pandemics.

I've had an acknowledgement from SAP and a nicely worded e mail in English saying due to Covid-19 the season pass refunds will take several more weeks. - No mention of how much the refund might be...

Interesting, I filled in the online form. It then sent me a validation email to click which I did. But haven't heard anything since.
It was for a week pass rather than a season one.

Lift pass refunded now
Nearly a metre of snow forecast over the next few days according to Bergfex (with snow line ranging from 2000m to 2100m). Very comforting to know for our Easter trip next year that big dumps so late into April can happen.

I submitted my claim last week and had my season pass refunded within a few days.
On a completely different subject, I know that they are due to replace the Bellcotte glacier gondola either this summer or next. If anyone hears about them selling off the old gondolas in due course put a post on here. There are loads on that lift so I reckon they should be a reasonable price. Its just a shame they painted them red the other year, I quite liked the beaten up graffiti look especially the new York taxi one!!

Hi - I wonder if anyone can help with a quick question. I'm (optimistically ) sorting next year's holiday to Belle Plagne, as having booking incentive to do this month.
I was thinking of staying at the lower end of Belle Plagne, but will be taking my daughter to ski school (also BP) at 9.15am. Rather than walking up the resort, I was hoping to do a short ski down to Bellecote and then back up on the gondola to the lesson meet. But does anyone know what time the Roche de Mio lift starts running? I've seen some places say 8am and others 9am.
Thanks in advance

Not sure but believe that it would be 9am for people with skis And maybe 8 for foot passengers. An other thought is that gondola’s might be out of action next season due to CV.
Other may know better

@rutlandchris, whereabouts at the "lower end"? There are quite a few lifts, both internal and external to accommodation, to get you to higher levels.

Thank you - was looking at Quartz....but also considering a couple of more central accommodation ie Gemeaux, Arolles and Constellations

The Gondola isn't a good option, huge queues always. You could use Arpette or Blanchets to ski down and get to the top of the village.
To walk there, from Quartz level 3 , you can go via the car park , go up about 100m, go in Agate, up one level, through the corridor , cross over to Beryl, go up 2 lifts in there, and you come out opposite the Spar. Takes about 7 minutes.

I think both of those open at around 09:00 (?). The queue for Arpettte can be lengthy, and then it takes around 7-8 minutes. Blanchets usually has a short queue (except in half-term), but take around 11 minutes. Either would be very tight to make BP ski-school for 09:15.

rutlandchris, Belle Plagne is really not that big. Your ski-down-lift-up idea is interesting, but not sensible. Just walk up: it won't be very far and much less hassle.
