Just stopped in Mons Belgium on the way down.
Looks rather overcast here compared to sunny and 12 degrees C in Folkestone.
Looking at the sky I wouldn’t be surprised if it snowed on my way there.

Is there a discount pass for foot passengers on ski lifts? Something that would cover the busses too for a week? My other half and I are going to be sharing the toddler sitting duties whilst the other skis.

Foot passenger lift rides aren't cheap. Expect to pay about 26e per ride!

@ousekjarr, ah cool, so using a family pass, each person has a pass and all passes can be used to access the lifts and busses. Is that your understanding?

@blondends, my understanding is that it is a single pass which either parent can use - the photo associated to it is of both parents, so when the gates/staff compare the camera shot of the skier with the file photo it checks both. If you wanted a second card, I think that would be a full priced ticket - but you could have the second one as a hiker card if you wanted to meet up on the mountain for lunch each day. Caveats are that the hiker card is _without_ ski kit, so if you were going up with a toddler and your skis with the intention of swapping over and your partner returning with the toddler and their skis, that may not be allowed. If you can share skis and poles (and therefore are happy adjusting the bindings on each swapover), it could work.
If the second pass is just for access to the buses, don't bother - the ski buses will likely let you on anyway, while the postbus costs are about €3 between Hinterglemm and Saalbach so it won't break the bank if you want or have to take that instead. If you get desperate, a taxi for the same distance is about €15.

Talking about the w/c 12th Jan, if anybody needs accommodation do get in touch We're currently up to our ears in powder, and, assuming it stops snowing in the next 10 days, conditions could be idyllic.

@tatmanstours, yup, the snow conditions were amazing today - shame that (1) the vis was poor and (2), unrelatedly, I fell and smashed my knee...
I found the doctors at the local clinic very helpful though.

Sorry to hear that. I confess that I chickened out and conserved my energies for the Hinterhag - which was great fun, as always.

Hello! First of all I'm new to this so forgive me if I'm using it wrong! Myself and my boyfriend are looking for a room in or close to Saalbach-Hinterglemm. We are two Irish students travelling for the year. We would be arriving sometime around the 14th of January and would likely be staying until mid March (ish). If anyone has anything they can offer us, knows someone who can or could point us in the right direction it would be much appreciated! I have a ski-instructor job lined up in both Saalbach and in Kitzbühel, but unfortunately neither can offer me accommodation so we're trying our best to look for somewhere to stay in either area.. We are travelling by car so even somewhere slightly outside the main area would work for us. Any help at all would be much appreciated. Thank you!

There's a new-ish "Inside Saalbach" FB page which has appeared this season. It's mainly folk posting photos of the current snow, but there have been some posts from people looking for longer term accommodation.

@almaher8, for Saalbach alternative options would be Viehofen its still on the ski bus route, or Maishofen at the bottom of the valley, the tourists office might be able to help as there are designated residences for season workers they are always pretty helpful

@almaher8, See my reply on the other thread you’ve started, and also my response to your PM.
We can accommodate a one week booking for the week beginning 12th January, but after that the earliest we could help you would be 9th March.
I will circulate a message on Facebook to see if any of my contacts have a room available for a two month let.

@Eddy, The iconic Josef Solar is supposed to be “on his way”. In the meantime others are doing a pretty good job of filling in, including Marco Antonio Lozano, who is a trained operatic tenor (and admittedly a bit of a fish out of water) - he did a cracking job of Bohemian Rhapsody a few days ago. I seem to remember posting the video I recorded on here - scroll back a page - it was excellent!

My first post, but delighted to have found such a passionate lot of people about the resort we have chosen for our ski holiday this year. First time in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, second time in Austria, mostly done French Alps in the past. Staying in a hotel in Hinterglemm (Hotel Egger).
I would appreciate recommendations for ski hire - convenience is important, i.e. close to the hotel.
Also ski school for a couple of private ski lessons, we have skied many years but find lessons in a new resort useful to help discover the resorts but more importantly keep the confidence and technique updated - so a real success in the past has been an older instructor who didn’t feel the need to impress us with their technique but new the resort really well (Stuart in Alpe d’Huez for anybody that has tried that resort).
Lastly we love good quality mountain restaurants, as OH often states there are two words in ski holiday and both are important!
Sorry for so many questions, but thanks in advance

@Debbie0312, for Hotel Egger the closest hire shop is Intersport Breitfuss about 50 metres away on Haidweg towards the centre of town. For a lesson/guide, Snow & Fun meet at the bottom of the U-Bahn and their office is a short walk away on the road below. They also do kit hire if you’d prefer one stop - both hire shops are good, and our kids learned with the ski school and had good experiences. S&F have a range of instructors and should be able to provide someone suitable.

The Egger has a great location, just next to the U-bahn, which gives access to the Westgipfel and Zwolfer. Probably a slightly awkward 4 min walk to the Reiterkogelbahn, though you can always get to the South facing slopes by skiing down the Zwolfer Nord to the Hochalm, and thence across. A long way for a short cut, but hey, no walk across town.
The nearest hire place is, (unless it's changed recently), InterSport Breitfuss, about 50m down the hill from the hotel, but there are plenty nearby. Actually once got a really dodgy set of boots and skis from them, but it was 33 years ago, and they improved, though I've not used them for years.
Mountain restaurants? Try one, if you don't like it, go somewhere else the next day. There are so many, that if the standard wasn't high, people would just ski to the next place. My mother could never go past the Rosswaldhutte without stopping, if you want me to name names, but really, they all seem to have their charms.
Can't really help you with ski instructors, but if it is less about lessons, and more about guiding, I would say don't bother. If you are comfortable intermediates and blues and reds are fine, I would just explore. As long as you stay in the Glemmtal, if you find yourself tired at the wrong end of the valley, the ski bus will take you back to Hinterglemm for free. If it's more about technique and that, I'm sure somebody else can chime in. Enjoy.

@Debbie0312, Check out www.skill.at for both ski hire and instruction. When are you in Hinterglemm?

@Debbie0312, welcome to Snowheads Debbie! If you are used to France then you will be pleasantly surprised by the infrastructure of Saalbach Hinterglemm. Superb lift system, superb restaurants all over the mountain, sensibly priced and so so clean!. The toilets throughout the area are exceptional.
If you only want a guide to discover the area then I would save your money , grab a map and get stuck in, so well linked it’s difficult to get lost. Plenty of options though for an instructor if required, your Hotel will help with this, or the Saalbach tourist office are happy to help. The Egger is practically ski in ski out, expect families though as this is a Kinder Hotel so specialises in this area.
Have great time, hope the snow stays good for you
