@Redial, Off Season,,,No need to Groom 300km of Carpet for less than 500 customers at his time of the season.
It is still snowing.once it has eased off they will get out those terrible machines, create autobahns & make it dangerous for everyone |
500 customers! Wow! Understandable if that’s the case. So likely to be Lech only still this weekend with 50kms or slightly more open? I assume they’re not going to jump to 100-150km by Friday across Arlberg.

@Redial, By the end of this week & following they will have 200-300 km open (weather dependent)!
When I say 500 its a kinda joke, mostly just locals, skibums & German/Swiss Daytrippers....
It is also Level 4 Avalanche Risk above Treeline & general Level 3 allround. They cannot groom higher pistes until the flanks have been blasted ...

Take what @stanton, says with a pinch of salt, he doesnt like pistes. He is correct when he says that the Arlberg does not see the sense in spending the sort of money that Ischgl does on getting the pistes open early. However until now there has been a lack of snow so not sure there was much more that could have easily been done to open more of the area. Currently many of the lifts are stopped from opening because of the storm. Given the amount of snow that has fallen it would seem likely that much more of the area will be open when the winds abate and once all the avalanche checking has been done. The resort has announced that the pre season ticket price has been extended to Friday 14th (from 7th) which implies they expect to be running a much more extensive operation from the 15th ("normal" day ticket is €58 whereas preseason, "Schneekristal", is only €38 per day).

@Redial, yes they will most likely.
Main reason for limited pistes was lack of snow and high temps.
And today, well look at the webcams.... all will be fine
And yes, ignore @stanton

Thanks All. Doing Dublin-Zurich this Thursday 15th to Monday. Debating Ischgl vs Anton (been to both previously). Looks like weather will be fine (I hope) so available kms is next on the list. Ischgl seems to have a better track record to date in the season.

I was in Ischgl at the weekend, though nothing possible on Sunday. I know conditions will have changed dramatically with the snow but they could only really be described as OK on Saturday, good in places higher up, hard and icy not so high. A lot of the higher pistes will have been stripped by the wind, I suspect the pistes along the border ridge are more exposed than most of the Arlberg ones. Ischgl will have had less snow than the Arlberg but piste preparations are likely to be further advanced there. If you can, wait as late as possible to make your decision.

@Redial,
Ischgl is predominatly North Facing.. The manmade snow does not melt nearly as fast as in St Anton . St Anton has to lay it down twice the thickness as Ischgl ....The energy costs are huge.

For a diversion from watching snowy webcams. We will be staying Stubenbach side of Lech next Feb so need to take 212 below Schlosskopfe to get back to hotel. If you are Zürs side, to avoid bus, do you need to go via Zug or do runs 160 and 173 manage to get to lifts or do they drop at a bus stop.

Danger Level 4 – high
Danger level 4 – high and 2 – moderateTree line
As a consequence of fresh snow and wind a high danger will be encountered in some regions.
As a consequence of fresh snow and a strong to storm force wind from northwesterly directions, extensive wind slabs formed since Saturday. The wind slabs can be released very easily in all aspects above the tree line. Avalanches can in isolated cases reach large size. The danger exists in particular in alpine snow sports terrain. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and great restraint. With the end of the intensive snowfall, the natural avalanche activity will appreciably decrease. Gliding avalanches are also to be expected, especially on steep grassy slopes.

@John617, you cannot ski back to Stubenbach, you will need a bus or walk.
210/212 end at the valley-main road, and Stubenbach is a bit higher, and on the opposite slope.
160 does not end in Lech but along the road between Zürs and Lech (map is very unclear here...) no lift connection, only bus
173 Does end in Lech, but needs a 5 minute gentle walk to Schlegelkopflift

Starting to open a lot more now the storm has gone. Still fairly quiet in town, even more so on the snow so been nice to enjoy the powder without lots of people in a powder frenzy. More starting to open up slope and lift wise too.

Official Weather
The bitter frost will end, however, a major onset of warm weather is not expected. An Atlantic front will result in a first significant frost weakening on Sunday. With major clouds weak snowfalls are expected especially in the morning. On Monday, clouds are still forecast and weak snowfalls are expected once more in the afternoon. Tuesday promises to become the sunniest day of the entire week. On Wednesday, slightly föhny south-westerly winds are revived in the mountains with clouds shifting before the sun. A weak disturbance influence is forecast for the entire Thursday. The snow line will be around 1000m. Changeable westerly weather will follow, however, a clear trend is still not noticeable.

Snowed most of the day today in Lech, finally stopped about 4pm. Made the visibility up top quite poor, which combined with all the piles of fresh stuff on the pistes gave my legs a real work out for my first ski of the season. Enough people about to make the area feel open and the put a bit of life in the bars but I barely had to share a lift today, no queues to be seen anywhere.
